The "caravan" (actually they are bussed a lot of the way, but start marching for the photo ops) situation is coming to a head. Mexico can't or seem unwilling to stop them. Bizarre. Thousands in this group and I'd say some Mexican will avail themselves of the opportunity to come along for the ride.
Trump says he will cut aid to those countries who have allowed this to happen. (but not Mexico at this stage) He'll try to pin the blame for this on Democrats and their open borders policy. I dunno how far he will go in using the military because of the political risks.
Democrats will say they are all honest to goodness refugees and that the timing of this is just a coincidence.. They'll be hoping for excessive use of force at the border - preferably children or women hurt or killed so it can be broadcast around the world.
I have no idea how this will play out with the midterms.

It may well be dumb, and may well take the cake, but post-2016 that’s how Dermocrats roll. Remember when they used Obama-era photos of children in cages to beat up on Trump (that deplorable meanie orange hair racist!!), yet said SFA when, as mentioned, it actually happened on their watch?

You mean they actually WANT children or women hurt or killed? That's how they roll? Because that was what @Crucial was criticising, not that they (or any other polly) can be duplicitous.

That comment either shows a massive ignorance of what has been going down the past few years or, as is most probable, the usual knee-jerk defence of your side.

I can't comment on whether people actually want migrants to get hurt. But one thing is for sure, get ready for them to politicize the hell out of this situation. I was going to say the bar is very low now, but TBH I'm not convinced there is a bar at all anymore. Nothing is off limits.

Of all the dumb posts and statements that appear in this thread, this takes the cake.I repeat. The Dem' political operatives at the heart of this operation want bloodshed at the border. The goal of this Caravan is to cause hostility and provoke Trump into using aggressive force. Bloodshed footage for the MSM allies (even some pro-amnesty Republicans)
They want Trump in a bind - let them in, he's weak on the border.
Resist too much - he's Hitler or something. It's over 2000 miles from Honduras to the Southern border of the U S. If these folks average 20 miles a day, they'll get here mid February. Obviously this is a paid for publicity stunt. Who is feeding 5,000 people? Where are they using the toilet? Where are they bathing? Sleep in? Where are there possession s--they don't have any belongings at all. This is all so tightly controlled. The human shields are the children.
This is a gross miscarriage of the democratic process and totally sick.
-
@frank Sadly I agree that the current deranged mob running the Democrats absolutely want bloodshed if that means Trump would go.
2,000 miles to walk, I guess we'll know pretty soon as to whether they are getting 'outside' support if they suddenly show up on the border in a couple weeks..I just can't see it though, surely this would be losing issue for the Dems especially if there appears to be some assistance to get them there. My feeling is Trump is using this more to gain support.

Really? You both believe that Democrat politicians actively want deaths* to force a political point scoring exercise?
*I assume bloodshed isn't hyperbole for grazed knees?
-
@antipodean 'Deaths' might be pushing it, but yes there appears to be an extremist element within the party calling for Trumps removal by any means necessary. I mean he's literally Hitler right? So the ends must justify the means.

I ignore the lunatics on either side of debates. If you give them air, they shape the narrative and it becomes increasingly partisan.
-
@antipodean That's where the Dems are failing hard. They should be turfing out the radical element rather than embracing them, moderates are leaving.

I think its obvious. Gingrich and other Republicans are saying that there are two key issues in this election - Kavanaugh and the 'Caravan'
Politically that is smart, as they are winning issues. It's also smart that the Dems are avoiding those issues. The conspiracy theory that the Dems are (indirectly) paying for the caravan doesn't add up when the Dems don't want to talk about the issue
Also, it's worth noting that huge numbers of Central Americans pay coyote's several thousand to cross the border every year. The passage is not safe and it's believed the majority of females are raped on the journey.
These people are not paying coyote's and they are relying on safety (and success) in numbers. They could easily be paying for their own food and living rough. This situation ends as soon as the US convinces Mexico its in their interest to stop it. Sometime after the midterms Trump will use either a carrot or a stick to get Mexico on his side.

Both sides have radical elements. Both sides giving voice to them drives away their own moderates.
@frank said in US Politics:
What if there were 8000 Russians at the border wanting to come in to vote for Trump?
Been to Brighton Beach in New York? By 2015 there was about 400,000 Russians living in America. By the mid-1990s more than half obtained refugee status.
The question for Trump is how to control his border in the face of this precedent. If this caravan forces its way in it would signal to everyone in the failed states of central America how to safely get into the USA.
So what can Trump offer Mexico to get them to intervene? Because they seem incapable of preventing drug mules and illegal migration as it currently stands.
