      What are your thoughts.

I can be quite selfish with these things while I am employed. I think the timing is horrific though.

I don't care what it's for if it's a public holiday then I'm all for it.

          I reckon it's a great holiday/celebration to have.

Annoyed at the timing though. Will come at the busiest time of year with the FY year end in the mix. I know it won't fit but it'd be great to have an extra holiday around October/November.

I can't disagree with this more. Almost all our holidays are late Dec to early Feb as it is with Labour weekend and ANZAC day the outliers. Between 25/4 and roughly 25/10 (i.e. half the year) we currently have one public holiday.

The timing sucks though one PH in six months and now we will have two but in 3 weeks! Make it a set date and say 3rd Monday in July. It can still be Matariki just won't necessarily coincide with the rising of the constellation. Plenty of places already have a fixed date for any observances.

First new PH since 1974 (Waitangi) although ANZAC and Waitangi have only recently been mondayised. Until that happened 2022 would only have had 9 PH's now it will be 12

@Godder Do away with Queens Birthday. Even the Poms don't celebrate it

Or get rid of Waitangi Day.

Queen's birthday is irrelevant today, as is it being in June.

@Kirwan That would be provocative. I get Waitangi has a history but that's died recently down & it's actually one of only three (counting the various Anniversary Day's) public holiday's that are relevant to NZ. Matariki will be the fourth.

The rest are mostly either Christian festivals or anachronistic relics of the early 20th Century (Labour Day, Queens Birthday). ANZAC Day comes from the same epoch but I would argue it is still very relevant to our notion of nationhood as is - like it or loathe it - Waitangi.

always used to find it amusing when I was living in the UK and it was 'Queens BIrthday' in NZ, but nothing there.

Maybe they are setting us up to drop QB...a day in Jul/Aug would make more sense.

....not to mention her immediate family are either racist bigotted old fucks, flocking to leave the establishment or kiddy fiddlers.

Although true you need to add Queen's Birthday to the 'relevant to NZ' pile. After all she is the Queen of NZ and our head of state.
One we would lose if we became a republic.

I like the Matariki addition. All part of our growth of an identity of our own.
Would be happy for Labour Weekend to be replaced by something more relevant (would be good to clear out the religious celebrations as well as long as they are replaced)
Not a holiday but FFS, when are we going to stop 'Guy Fawkes' night as something in our legislative calendar (i.e. the timing for sale of fireworks)
