How's the weather?

Do we talk weather...?
Just saw this
https://news.sky.com/story/tsunami-watch-for-new-zealand-and-fiji-after-large-undersea-quake-12214326
What does this mean for you NZers? Stay off the beach?
The word tsunami just triggers all sort of triggers for me, nearly as much as whirlpool or landslide.Flurries of snow here by the way.
-
Very unlikely to even be noticeable here in NZ
-
Actually should have happened already earlier this morning and in the dark so unsure if anyone would have seen anything
-
@R-L yea unfortunately most of these are false alarms or non-events.
Balance between warnings and crying wolf...
We did finally get some rain yesterday, 18mm!
-

Unfortunately???
-
@Hooroo lol that made me laugh, TR must like the rough weather.
Ah well, I thought you'd all get some snaps of big waves at least..
-
@Hooroo haha yea I had another sentence I was going to type that started with unfortunately but changed what I was typing...so yea FORTUNATELY.
I expect my work colleague who lives on the coast was woken by the Tsunami siren this morning.
-
-
I hope the storm hits, fucken love a good storm except if it interrupts the cricket
-
Warm, dry and surprisingly not humid, so really quite pleasant. Apparently dropped below 20 last night so remarkably pleasant.
No rain. And haven't had much all summer. Quite dry. So much for La Nina.
No immediate threat of sudden catastrophic sea level rise induced by seismic activity.
-
@R-L as long as there's a safety word!
-
while there was the warning, it must have been a very low probability, as the sirens on the coast were not activated.
@booboo yeah we have had F-all rain again, not drought here yet, but groundwater levels not recovered from last years drought so without additional rains this summer to get some growth on the farms could be bad for farmers again.

Speak for yourself Queenslander, its been a terrible summer here in NSW. La Nina def made her presence felt, odds of rain, heaps of wind.
-
Think the tsunami warning is just for stronger currents than usual.
@taniwharugby Yep, another dry summer here too. Lost in the economic news with the arrival of Covid last March was that last year's dry summer was starting to put a fair bit of stress on parts of the rural economy.

a 0.75m 'surge' was recorded at Port Fitroy on Great Barrier and someone at Ahipara said waves were coming 30-40 metres further up the beach than normal for half tide but only knee deep.
'Problem is these things breed complacency and geologic records show parts of NZ have historically been hit by devastating tsunami.
-

That's quite amazing that it could effectively "wrap" right around and into the harbour but I guess if you have that volume of water moving it will get into every nook and cranny. Any path of least resistance.

Yep. Where my parents used to live was on flat land on an estuary. Used to be a huge kauri forest that was wiped out by a tsunami apparently. The found all of the trees had fallen in the same direction, away from the ocean, at the same time. Bit of a clue. Must have been quite something to do that to a forest.

You may as well have not bothered with quarantine and stayed in Palmy.
-
@dogmeat Looks like an 8-10 where my parents were. A 12+ in the Kaipara must have been devastating - and Hokianga. Harbours aren't well named in a tsunami.Fast moving, large volumes of water into confined spaces isn't going to end well.
-
yeah I wonder how far inland a 12m Tsunami reached, where Iive we'd be safe from that, but 12m coming up the Whangarei Harbour would likely make it up to the top of the falls, which is about 5km from the further inland of the Whangarei Harbour.

Christ that reminds me, I’m due an overnighter there next week for work. I’d better get some precautionary shots.

Well according to Labour and the Greens the rural economy is something we should be ashamed of, so its probably a good thing it's stressed. All those farmers can go and find something productive to do, like measuring happiness, kindness administration or vegan cheffing.

Cold. Really fucking cold.
High of 2 today snd it’s currently -6. Been running through snow and ice all week. I have a deal with my wife that I do my weekend run (1.5-2.5 hours) before my sons judo at 11 on Saturday morning.
Current forecast is that the warmest it will be is -4.
FML.
-
@MajorRage it's either 34 and 85-90% humidity. Or pissing rain. Ah the tropics in summer

La Niña in large effect further south. Haven't see this area so green in living memory. Also a remarkably cool summer - not one day over 40 and only a handful over 30.

about -1.3 in Cornwall and strong winds from the East. About -5.2 Wind chill.
No snow or ice as the air is really dry
-
Yeah -2 and a pretty good amount of snow. Fuck running because ice.
-

It does get a bit hairy and gotta keep your eyes on the paths. But after about 20 mins when your nicely warmed up, it's great - especially when it's clear.

What's your training route?
I loved long runs around Hampstead Heath when we were training for the NY mara (didn't get to do it), but man some days were brutal with the weather.
-
@voodoo I run mainly along the Basingstoke canal tow paths. They are really nice and (mostly) well maintained so it's a great place to run. When it proper rains though, there are mud patches which are a proper pain in the ass. There are a few road routes too which are nice during lockdown, but way too busy during normal times.
The UK weather isn't great, but it's rarely THAT cold that you can't really go for a run.
-
@MajorRage said in How's the weather?:

I have a weather station in the garden. Temperature changes every 10 mins or so.

The hardest part I found bout it was the complete lack of a break. I.e, at 3am, it was still 31-32 and humid as anything. The idea of waiting for the evening for it to cool down to do some exercise was pointless.

My best friend is coming on two decades and loves it considering the alternative which was the cold of Tasmania.

The lack of change of season stuff shits me.
How do you know when it's Spring if there's no daffodils?
Don't have it as bad as youse guys in the actual tropics but this year it's been really mild here. Especially since we g or back from our Christmas northern excursion.
Usually about now there's a couple of weeks of unbearableness. But not so far this year.
It's been pretty much perfect.

Went to Tassie over Christmas last year.
Fuck living in Hobart.
Could feel the cold emanating off the Derwent in the height of summer. Wouldn't swim there.
Went up Mt Wellington under dressed.
So exposed to the Southern Ocean.
Hate to think what winter would be like.

Nup.
Hobart is Dunedin only with Southern exposure.
