We just had four days of mid to high 20s and almost no wind. To get some concept of what that's like in Canberra, it's like the earth stopped rotating.

I watched a game of rugby on Saturday, mid-20s, got sunburnt, aside from a bit of rain last week, been a very warm past few weeks.

@nepia The day that daylight savings ends is the most miserable of the year for me.

In further proof that millennials need their fucking heads examined 😉 a survey came out here over the weekend that suggested a majority of 18-35 year olds want daylight savings scrapped.

This post really should be in grumpy old man thread

It's a valid point in either thread - but the generation thing is interesting. I want to move our time zone so that we effectively have (modern) daylight saving (nonsense term) all year like you. I had this discussion with my old man yesterday with a bunch of others, he was the only one one that wanted "winter" time all year (fucking morning people). He wants "natural" time. I tried to explain to him that time was a man made construct and was completely dependent on longitude (in an Earthly / clock sense). Natural time will vary if he changed seats in the house.

From a practical point of view - I am unlikely to get up and mow the lawns before work in the morning but I will (reluctantly) do it if I can see when I get home.

Did those millenials understand which way it worked? Do they actually want "summer" time all year?
"1946 — New Zealand summer time (12 hours in advance of GMT) was adopted as New Zealand standard time. Daylight saving time was effectively discontinued at this point."

"1974–5 — Daylight saving was trialled again in 1974, and introduced in 1975. Daylight saving time is 1 hour ahead of New Zealand standard time."

Our "summer" daylight hours work for most people (except dairy farmers) leave them at that. My ducks and geese now wake me at 06:30 instead of 07:30 they don't know the difference.

@snowy I thought you farmers were worried that the animals would get sunburnt with the extra hour of sunshine...

I can see the arguments either way for DS - sans kids, I'd probably be OK on darkness til mid-morning then a long twilight - but when you're waking then rushing the kids out the door for school, the darkness sucks a bit. Plus I quite like getting the fire on in winter, so an earlier sunset can be welcome.

On balance, I quite like it the way it is, colour me millenial.

Nobody would classify me as a farmer, but that is the bit that concerns me most about @dogmeat 's post. I actually don't think that people in the polls understand how time zones work and what happened in the past. My father was a good example? What the fuck is "natural time"? My neighbours are actually a millisecond ahead or behind me. Should we all do that?

Set the "clock" to the hours that most people want. For me that is GMT +13.
                  GOM.

@snowy In the early 70's (pre the 74 trial) TV news ran an April Fools report that the Labour govt had decided to introduce Daylight Savings from midnight. While it didn't have people smearing honey over the outside of their houses (1949 Wasp Prank by 1ZB) it did cause a lot of distress.

I can actually concede that its probably not the best idea to have kids walking to school in the dark in mid winter but personally I'd like an extension until the end of April. It's actually in Autumn and September that DS makes the biggest impact IMO Saturday light at 7:30pm Sunday you might as well fucking hibernate.

I hate going to and returning from work in the dark. It makes it seem like Winter's here already. /GOM

From reading some column in the DomPost last week - I think what the millenials actually want is exactly as you say - NZ to have a single timezone, at UTC+13:00 - and just leave it at that.
And - reading the column, despite wanting to disagree with it - as it was an opinion column in a newspaper... yeah, I think I agree.

To answer the thread title, not nearly as wet as expected.

Apparently Noah had been carrying out some maintenance on the Ark in anticipation of a massive rainfall event. Expected 6 hour totals in excess of 250 mm in and around here.

In the end we probably got 50mm over the weekend, with bugger all of it falling in the dam (damn!).

Seemed to all hang out to sea and the top end of Fraser, although Sunny Coast and Brissy copped a bit yesterday. Quite a number of roads across QLD cut as a result, but not the armageddon* predicted.

Scaremongering was enough to send holiday makers home early.

                              • I know Noah and Armageddon are at different ends of the Bible so it's kind of a mixed metaphor ...

Try having the DS discussion in Queensland.

Couple of work colleagues, one a local and anti and one from NSW, had a robust conversation a few years ago.

Qlder made the comment, all full of self confidence, that "You know that you don't get any more actual daylight: it's just playing with time ... ".

NSW was very diplomatic in his reply.

It is quite a pain to be an hour different to the rest of the Australian East Coast (And three hours different to NZ) over summer, but I can see the logic in not adopting it, mostly around increased energy consumption at home with aircons running longer etc, and very long evenings out north and west.

And I've come to enjoy the very early mornings in Summer. And you can fit in 9 holes (not that I've done that for years now) before work, rather than after.

Getting colder and cloudier here by the minute it feels.

Hoping for Day 20 on skis tomorrow or Wednesday.

Hows it looking? It's stunning here today, zero chance of any precipitation. Chilly though and a bit windy as well.

About a month past the normal cyclone season and hitting the coast quite a bit further south than normal- hence a lot of houses not meeting building specs for cyclonic activity

Well the sun has been shining but I don't think it's got into double digits the the last couple days. Fucking hell.

Yeah, it's ok in the sun, but as soon as your out of it, it's bloody cold. This time last year it was consistently 20-25. Fond memories of lockdown 1.

Yeah end of April last year we were sitting in the sun loungers in the back yard, bbq-ing and drinking, with the brick wall fence absolutely covered in lush green from the vine. It's completely barren at the moment, so can't see that happening this year.
