Liam Lawson of Pukekohe, currently a driver in the Red Bull academy, had a fine F2 debut in Bahrain this weekend. Won the opening sprint race of the season and claimed 3rd place in the feature race after starting 9th on the grid. If not for a collision and dnf in sprint race 2 he would be top of the standings

I guess that this would also be the thread to point out that the recent kiwi dominance in Aussie Supercars has continued after McLaughlin left for IndyCars.
Van Gisbergen is on the cusp of a new record for consecutive wins from the start of the season. 5 in a row including 3 with a broken collarbone and ribs.
Also the most entertaining driver to watch on the circuit (especially in the wet).

Maybe (like some other countries) our often winding roads give a good underlying level of being able to go around corners at speed.
Total over-simplification I know (most of these drivers come through from racing karts when little).

And the accessibility of the sport at the karting stage. Lawson started like many others, with his dad taking him down to the track

Lawson continues to make waves in F2, this time in Monaco. That passing maneuver is bonkers! No one passes in Monaco

Lawson had his win stripped for a technical breach. Didn't seem to affect the result, a shame but he would have turned heads with that performance

Liam Lawson gets totally ripped off in the final race of the German DTM championship. Leading the title race with an almost insurmountable lead, gets taken out of the race by the second placed driver in the title race early, then the two leading Mercedes slow down to allow the 3rd runner to overtake and win the race and the title. Lawson probably should have tried to stay out of trouble tussling with the second placed driver at the start, but I don't know what you can do in such a crowded field.

Lawson will have to console himself with a F1 junior trial at the end of the season
