Blues v Hurricanes
Saturday 3 April, 7:05pm
Eden Park, AucklandReferee: Brendon Pickerill
Assistant 1: Paul Williams
Assistant 2: James Doleman
TMO: Ben O’Keeffe -
Hearing that Sam Nock will start in the number 9 jersey against the Canes ..but the real biggie and it will be a test to how accurate my source is Tom Robinson will start and skipper the Blues ..Patrick Tuipulotu will start off the bench ..
-
@steven-harris wow, while I think Nock should be the starting 9, that is not helpful for the Blues to build combos fucking around with the 9's if turns out correct.
-
Wow.
If only Sam Nock was given as much rope as Ruru.
Blues were undefeated last season when Nock started at 9 by the way.

And looked best this year when he was out there with Black.
His pass (and kicking game) are complementary to Black and they just look like a better combo. I don't know why we haven't seen them again, was it injury or does he have an attitude problem? It can't be form.

Ruru is a lot more physical , particularly around the rucks. I love a good passer, so I'm a Nock fan - but I can see the rationale for Ruru starting to play to a game plan

PT starting to look like he needs a break. I would be stoked if Robinson does start, not as a Cane's man, but as an AB's man, I intersted to see him in starting role, and Akira needs a gentle wake up call I think

I simply cannot.
His error rate is way too high at this level if you look at his poor passing and poor discipline.
I'm not sure how many games Leon has to see before he realises this.

And poor kicking

Tom Robinson starting at lock? That would be great from an AB perspective I think.
-
Does the Ginga Messiah captain Northland?
Is he replacing Paddy T as captain and lock or just captain and starting at 6 (or 14 😉 )?
-
@nepia He's in the Blues leadership group.
I would suggest he's captaining from 6.
Be good to see Pierce get a run as the power lock to replace Patty.
-
-
@nepia I think I understand now. A ginga Canterbrian did something traumatic to you!
-
I am more confident on the Nock call at 9 than I am as Robinson , as skipper ..I either being duped , or it’s spot on , put it this way I have’nt been let down by this source before , just hope it’s not a red herring.
-
@steven-harris it doesn't seem that crazy a prediction. Robinson has earned a start. He's in the leadership group (Which is only 3 players I think).

He was excellent last year at lock, I think we should try to keep all four of Sotutu, Robinson, Akira, and Dalton on the fields as much as possible
-
@kirwan I would prefer a bit more rotation. I would start Robinson at 6 and allow Akira to come off the bench - Akira has been out of sorts the last couple of weeks - plus the Blues have good depth at lock. A bench with Patty and Akira would be great.

Out of the backrow, I'd say Sotutu has had form dip more than any of the others.
And Akira has been coming off at the 60min mark, so he's not been overplayed.
-
@kirwan I would disagree (Akira last week made 1 tackle and conceded 2 turnovers) but regardless yes you could play Akira at 8 and Robinson at 6 and have Sotutu coming off the bench as another example.
-
@steven-harris good sauce...Paddy T out with a neck injury. Darry in and Robinson starts at 6 and (c). Aki on the bench.

What has Canterbury got to do with this ?
-
Can someone enlighten me why Robinson doesn't play more often at lock given the number of 6s in the Blues-he much prefers flanker or is missing some skill at lock? Looks big enough...
-
Any other backline changes?
-
@dice Hoping to see Faiane in for Plummer.
-
Haha
-
With Jordie Barrett in such good form with the boot, the Blues won't be starting any of penalty magnets on Friday. They must have been practising all week not to give penalties away. Anything with 65 metres of the posts. Boom, Jordie's big boot gets another three points for the Hurricanes.

wait, you're saying that kicking penalty goals is a good idea?

If only someone had told them for the first game

i would like to see the drills used for this
-
Ffs, Blackwell returns to the starting side and Savea comes back in. It felt like we were building but selecting those two again is just taking a step backwards. Holland will never learn I'm afraid, atleast we have a strong bench.
Jordie must be 10 cover aswell.
-
@canes4life It's hard to believe aye? IWL was awesome, last week! Now back to the bench to make way for that midget.
Armstrong starting again, too.
-
@stargazer it's just so painful. IWL was one of the top players on the park last week, it surely doesn't give the kid confidence when he's replaced by one of shortest, if not the shortest lock in Super Rugby history. Seriously, what does a guy like Blackwell do at training to make him command such a permanent position in the team? He's just so ordinary and has tits for hands.
Numia and Rakete-Stones have been alot stronger over recent weeks, Armstrong is lucky to be in the 23, let alone starting.
-
@canes4life Makes me feel like:
-
I am eagerly awaiting the Blues team before tipping. Given this Canes team and the upheaval at the Clan, god only knows what Rangi has in store.
-
IWL is injured? Weird.
-
The Hurricanes have possibly the strongest bench in the competition, they will look to add a lot of power from the 50th minute with the likes of Numia, Walker-Leawere, Flanders & PUJ being injected late into the game.

That's what happens when all your best players start the game on the bench
-
@african-monkey yep Faiane in for Plummer. Plummer on bench with AJ Lam I'm hearing...
-
@canefan This is a mentality of the past, coaches don't subscribe to that view anymore. These days bench players have hugely influential roles & are just as important for the team as the starting role.
