This game might start at 1.00pm!!

The time of 1.30pm comes from the schedule on the NZR website and their earlier media release, but the Highlanders graphic with the team naming and the Sky Sport schedule both seem to indicate the game starts at 1.00pm!

I got to watch most of this game. You have to feel for the Barbarians team who only assembled on Thu. Another player arrived this morning.

That ref loved the sound of his whistle.

Highlanders scrum was understandably dominant against a Barbarians team who probably only got one or two practice scrums in. I thought Rowan Wingham in particular seemed dominant here.

Press' line out throwing was probably better, but Hansen made a big impact off the bench with his running. He was very involved.

Fabian Holland was very solid in the line out and look fairly good aeound the field.

Withy was the best forward. He runs good lines on attack, and is a good support runner. I'm not sure he looked completely comfortable at the back of the scrum when he moved to No.8.

Poliko made some good runs in the second half.

Hastie looked a class above the rest in the first half. Seems to have really good awareness.

Millar didn't miss a kick at goal in 10 attempts and has some speed.

Manson also looks quick. Pepe was the most threatening in the back line.

For the Barbarians, Parker looks to have a huge boot and tries to make maximum distance with his kicks. Led to a penalty not going out on the full, but risk-reward I guess. Gave away an intercept try.

Saumaki was dangerous and very physical.

Hannah was good, but needs to put on 20kg

@bobily2 Saumaki was wasted on the wing. He was devastating at centre for SAC and in the NZ Schools-Baabaas game last year.

I haven't seen this game but I understand from the last comments in the highlights video that the Baabaas finished the game with 13 men.

From memory it was the reserve halfback who was sent off and then another player yellow-carded late for a deliberate knock-on. The ref penalised the Baabaas off the park.

@bovidae So that 70 - 17 score isn't quite a realistic reflection of the difference in strenght of both teams. No doubt, the 5 franchise teams will be much stronger, but I found this a bit excessive.

@stargazer The Highlanders played well but the Barbarians took it to them, and created try-scoring chances. Mistakes and a lack of combinations hurt them. Individually the Barbarians have some quality players but had less than 2 days preparation.
