        No MMA nominations

That’s interesting when you consider Adesanya was the 2019 sportsman of the year for winning his belt. In the period for this award he’s defended the belt 3 times. But that doesn’t even get a nomination amongst this group:

Because he gave NZ a blast during the year for not treating him differently? His persona can rub people the wrong way and whether you agree with the content of his speech when he won or not it certainly would have pissed some off. It certainly wasn't the humbleness that is the standard at these awards.

              No Eugene Bareman?

He openly accused the government/police of being racist because they wouldn't let him form a training bubble.
Again, whether right or wrong the guy has a gob and he uses it which is bound to piss people off (Twin Towers/Rape/Police are Racists/Chip on the shoulder speech).
Yes the old farts are conservative but that's my point. Don't be surprised he isn't given a platform to potentially embarrass them.

I think so? It would be strange for them to nominate Adesanya & Bareman in 2019 but not for this 2 year period. That’s was why I thought the omissions were interesting.

I hope that crucials theory of political retribution is incorrect.

My guess it’s because of another disagreement (this one isn’t political)

I was going to post just this.

A panel then decides the final nominees and winner.

The current voting academy is: Alexis Pritchard, Alison Shanks, Andrew Alderson, Andrew Mulligan, Andy Hay, Ben Lucas, Bernadine Oliver-Kerby, Brendon Pongia, Dan Buckingham, Dr Farah Palmer, Eddie Kohlhase, Fred Woodcock, Graeme Crosby, Grant Sharman, Ivan Vicelich, James McOnie, Jayne Craike, Jodi Brown, Lesley Murdoch, Maia Jackman, Marc Hinton, Mark Richardson, Peter Williams, Rikki Swannell, Sarah Cowley Ross, Sir Michael Jones, Suzanne McFadden, Te Arahi Maipi, Tom Bartlett.

Edit: this is for the 2020-21 year.

                        Slight misrepresentation there.
His spiel directly accused the police and “bureaucrats “ of treating him differently because he’s black.
Add that to his record of controversial speaking and it wouldn’t surprise me if he is deemed to be a “risk”.

Is it a case of MMA not having a proper national body so they get forgotten about?

Reality is that is a list of some excellent sportsman, some next tier sportsman playing in the big leagues and some I've never even heard of despite following NZ sport to the extent I post on a sports forum about it.

It's beyond a joke to have no MMA representation.

Maybe he's not deemed as kind enough?

I actually have little issue in not being able to win it for the above reasons. But to not get nominated is simply not good enough.

There is no way somebody who came 11th in the premier league in scoring statistics is the NZ sportsman of the year nominee ahead of an actual world champion in a growing sport unless there is outside political involvement.

I’ll second that. Round it out with the Black Caps, Stead, Kane Williamson and Lisa Carrington. Sorted.

I never know how they actually choose winners of this thing, but the Black Caps winning the WTC is a feat that is unlikely to be replicated. We were punching so far above our weight to win that thing it's not even funny. We'll probably win the T20 or ODI WC's at some point as there's so much luck involved there, but not the tests, that's where your depth of talent gets tested to the maximum.

Nico seems highly unlikely given he didn't even make the final for sportsmen of the year

Ah. I was looking at the nominees! OK will re-think.

Expect Nico and Zoi to feature next year as these awards are for the sporting year from 1 December 2019 to 30 November 2021.

Olympic gold medallists usually win in an Olympic year so the likes of Bond, Carrington and the eights will be a good pick. The team will be the hardest to decide.

Stamenic or Fairweather for Emerging Talent.

Took an extended period of success, and one that is very very unlikely to ever be achieved again by us. By comparison, 5 gold medals is amazing - but the table below shows it's been done a hundred times or so. So awesome, but in a niche sport. The scale of the challenge climbed by the Black Caps tips them for me.
