2021 A sporting Year
-
You know, for a pretty fucked up year, there was an enormous amount of sport played, and some great sports stories created.
January India kicked Australia out of the test World Championship by winning the series in Australia.
Tom Brady won another fucking Superbowl in Feb, for his new team, proving once and for all just how great he is
The Crusaders continued their ownership of Super Rugby in NZ
The Trans-Ta$man comp was a ridiculously one-sided affair, with the Aus teams being cannon fodder (except for the fucking Chiefs the losers) with the Blues winning that final
We managed an Olympics, where Lisa Carrington's impressive shoulders will live long in the memory.
Giannis and the Bucks won the NBA over the Suns
NZ won the fucking test cricket championship, smoking India in the final
The ABs won the Rugby Championship
The Melbourne Demons broke a looooong premiership drought in the AFL
The Panthers avenged last year's GF loss by winning the NRL
NZ made the final of yet another cricket comp (seriously, it's still a little hard to believe how good this team is), and almost predictably lost.
The ABs had a very ordinary northern tour that managed to piss off pretty much everybody
The F1 drivers championship was decided in dramatic circumstances on the last lap of the seasonWhat else was there? What did you enjoy? What did you forget happened?
Predictions for 2022?

@mariner4life America's Cup. Too few teams but still impressive action out on the Hauraki in the days when it was Covid - what Covid?

oh yeah i forgot that one
i won't be so shameless as to even pretend i give even a solitary fuck about yacht racing though

@mariner4life I like sailing so folow it.
there was also the European Poofball Champs. Ingalund made their first final in a gazillion years and predictably lost on penalties. Messi finally won something with Argentina and Tuchel transformed Chelsea's season helped by Pep deciding the Champions League Final was the perfect time to change everything.
Plus we had the glorious humiliation of the breakaway european 'super clubs' and can look forward to the richest club in the world being relegated in May.

oh yeah the soccer. City won the premier league as well, which surprises no one as they will win this season as well.

The entire F1 season was fun. It wasn't just about the top two either. Norris had an incredible year, Alonso had some great moments and the Ferrari drivers look like a solid pair if the car keeps improving.
For consistent quality it has to be the UFC. There was one OKish event (the Tate fight night) but the rest were high quality to amazing. There was a streak in the middle of the year where 4-5 main events in a row were fight of the year contenders.
Dan Hooker has been my favourite kiwi sportsman for a while. Mixed results but 2021 was the year he seemed to get the attention of the international fans. So likeable, honest and just enjoys a good scrap.
Blues were good once they got their game plan sorted (Christie & Sullivan's kicking games were a massive part of this)

Oh and speaking of fight sports - Fury v Wilder III was a classic
Yeah that was terrific, breathed some much needed life into heavyweight boxing.
Test championship was the highlight as a Black Caps fan who has done it tough, nothing else came close.

I’m unsure I knew that the America’s Cup happened.
Without Lisa Carrington the Olympics barely made an imprint on me.
I loved the test win as I have two Aussie-Indian mates who are huge cricket fans.
But the highlights for me were Shield Snorters regaining the Bay title, and retaining then Shield.

What a surprising post from you

Echo Duluth’s summary of UFC and Fury v Wilder III
Emma Raducanu winning the US Open was a massive highlight.
The manner in which the match was played and won was fantastic.

Wow, looking through this thread, it's truly been an astonishing sporting year.
The obvious one missing on this thread for me though is Emma Raducanu.
Appreciate it may not have been much down south, but up here it was such a great wave to ride & achievement to be a part of.
The 6N was really good this year too despite being played in front of empty stadiums. Some excellent matches and Italy aside, pretty evenly matched teams.
The America's cup was too much for me. Watching all the NZ folk out on the water enjoying their best life, whilst we were under lockdown rules up here in the middle of winter was really hard and made me despise something which in the past has been something I've thoroughly enjoyed.

I didn't see it live, and hardly saw it in replay, but the Eights gave me, and still do, goosebumps.

Highlights for me:
-
Black Caps winning the inaugural Test Championship.
-
Team NZ retaining the America's Cup.
-
The Tokyo Olympics taking place despite the Covid crisis.
Lowlights:
- Last three games of the All Blacks EOYT. They were a bit shite.
From a 'neutral's' perspective the Ireland v NZ and France v NZ matches were superb

The commitment wasn't really there from far too many players in Black Jerseys and they got the beatings they deserved. Grim to watch.
