A dramatic start to the IPL 2022 at auction.

Trent Boult has sold for NZ$1.6million: https://www.1news.co.nz/2022/02/12/trent-boult-goes-for-16m-at-ipl-mega-auction/

Midway through the auction for Wanindu Hasaranga who was going for a major price - about NZ$2 million at the time - it suddenly went quiet, and when I looked up auctioneer Hugh Edmeades had fallen off the stage. Update: some media updates are reporting that he's fine and that he had 'just' fainted. I'm hoping it's as straightforward as that for him.

A few Black Caps got picked up on day two of the auctions. Mostly at or near reserve price after the big dollars spent on Trent and Lockie on Day One.

Black Caps at the Indian Premier League auction:

          SOLD

Trent Boult: $1.6 million to Rajasthan Royals

Lockie Ferguson: $2 million to Gujarat Titans

Finn Allen: $160,000 to Royal Challengers Bangalore

Devon Conway: $200,000 to Chennai Super Kings

Mitchell Santner: $380,000 to Chennai Super Kings

Adam Milne: $380,000 to Chennai Super Kings

          RETAINED

Kane Williamson: $2.8 million by Sunrisers Hyderabad

For some reason they aren't listed there, but Jimmy Neesham and Daryl Mitchell also got picked up in quick sucession by the Rajastahn Royals:

Also Southee (KKR), Seifert (DC) and Phillips (SH).

There were some big names that were unsold (e.g., Smith, Morgan, Al Hasan).

Who was sold to whom, and who didn't get a bid?

Surprised that Sohdi wasn't picked up. Mind you I don't really know how it works.

Other unsolds include Guptill and Munro

I think the limitation on only four foreign players being able to take the field at any one time tends to count against guys like Sodhi, Guptill, and Munro. Possibly the thinking is to find a local equivalent spinner/big hitter, unless they are guaranteed starters.

At the very top level, Sodhi tends to vary between brilliant and a bit inconsistent with his bowling as well. I'd had big hopes for him for the test team a few years back too, but for whatever reason, it hasn't quite worked out.

Interestingly, you see how they pay for our team.

NZC have about NZD$60M revenue each year.

The IPL list above has $7.14M USD, or around NZD $10.5M. That excludes the other 4 players I couldn't see easily - but the IPL is paying a sixth of our turnover, and about what the distribution is to the provinces.

Indian Cricket basically funds our domestic game when they tour here.

That's the first time we've really seen Flem go with a bunch of NZers at CSK. Conway seems a steal there as he can open and keep.

NZ watch: Southee takes 3/20 off 4 for the Kolkata Knight Riders as they very nearly defended 128 against RCB:

@donsteppa Their 5th bowler went for 46 off 3.2 Otherwise Kolkata were home easy

And one of those reminders that, for every howler by an Umpire, there seems to be even more by the players... 🙂
