Not scared, you shouldn't have joined with Wairarapa, who worked with Wellington to steal the Shield from us after The Battle of Solway. We have elephant memories in the Bay.

@machpants Meads Cup winners are compulsory, and it wasn't Wai-Bush's turn from the Hurricanes' Heartland teams/neighbouring teams.

The last five Heartland challenges the Magpies accepted were:

            9 July 2015: Wairarapa-Bush
            16 July 2015: Horowhenua-Kapiti
            23 July 2015: Mid-Canterbury

            30 June 2021: North Otago
24 July 2021: Ngati Porou East Coast

@number-10 Geez, I should have put money on that! I was just talking about that with mates a few days ago, saying I wouldn't be surprised if James got the gig!

No idea how he is as a coach, so I hope it works out well! Ozich is hard to replace.

Magpies have signed hooker Tyrone Thompson from Wellington.

@number-10 Gee, we still continue to have an embarrassment of riches at hooker with Messrs. Kereru-Symes, Devery and now Thompson fighting it out. It is possible that one of the first two may have signed elsewhere.

He has signed for 2 seasons.

Oh, and this probably wouldn't have happened if he had signed with the Canes; so glad he's with another franchise!

He barely got game time for Wellington, so not surprised he'd want out.

@dice Yep, 18 caps in two seasons, but almost all (if not all) via the bench. Crazy they rated the coke sniffer higher.

Now, he'll compete with Kereru-Symes and Devery (assuming both will be back). K-S the most experienced of the three, but Thompson may be the most talented. It will be an interesting battle for the 2 and 16 jersey.

Not a big surprise there as he was never going to oust J. Blackwell if they decided he was a lock nor R. Prinsep if they decided he was a blindside at the Canes.

Great to see the passion and pull of home is still strong. I get the shakes everytime I enter McLean Park such is the attachment I have for the ground. I even try to drive down Latham Street and past the main gates on the way back from town to where I am currently staying just to feel the vibe of the place.

Sweet, so we have 10 players in the Chiefs v MP match now.

Although, does this mean we lose one of Kereru-Symes and Devery? Still think Kereru Symes has huge upside.

@nepia Thompson takes Dixon's spot, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if Wellington tries to poach Devery, now that he's a Cane.

@stargazer They already have D. Coles and A. Aumua so he would still be in pod of three, except two of the three (four if you count the coke snorter/touch judge abuser who is currently a Bay of Plenty player) are All Blacks. Furthermore he would be dropping from the Minor Premiership Champions to one of the lesser also rans! Incidentally is Mr. Devery there on an injury replacement only contract or a full time one as the Canes Roster showing on their website earlier today and the initial squad announcement show only Coles, Aumua and the Snorter as hookers?

The Magpies might be looking for a third hooker, behind Thompson and Kereru-Symes. With Gene Syminton having gone up north, I wonder who the next in line is/is going to be ...?

According to the article, 28 players had already been re-signed by the end of December 2021.

At least 40 got game time in shield or NPC matches for the Magpies last year, and expectations are a similar number will be needed this year.

Do you think it is about time we took the Shield on Tour to give some of the minor unions like Bay of Plenty another chance after last years failed attempt? It is noted that Wellington has managed to weazle another Challenge, you'd think they must be getting heartedly sick of recording losses when up against Hawkes Bay by now! How has Auckland and Taranaki managed to avoid having to take us on yet the combined Cheque Book United Invitation outfit gets another Shield Challenge this season.....................................

NPC is now played in two pools. A province now plays every other province in their own pool and 4 cross-over games against provinces in the other pool.

Provinces in our pool are: Waikato, Counties Manukau, Otago, Southland, Wellington, BOP.
Our cross-over games are against: Manawatū (away), North Harbour (home), Canterbury (away), Tasman (home).

I've tried to rationalise who picked who, but witht he complicated selection process for cross-over games (see below), it's a lot of guess work.

All you can say is that in the first round of selections, the HBRU had 6th pick for a home game, so only two provinces would have been left to chose from for a Ranfurly Shield game (either North Harbour or Tasman).

In the 2nd round of picks, the Magpies would have been picked for an away game (for the Magpies), so by Manawatū or Canterbury.

In the 3rd round of selections, the HBRU would be 2nd to pick for an away game, so (again) Manawatū or Canterbury.

In the 4th and final round of selections, the Magpies would have been picked for a Ranfurly Shield game in Napier, by either North Harbour or Tasman. Tasman had first pick in that round of selections; North Harbour 6th (so only two teams left).

Would you want him back in the Magpies squad to finish his career in black & white? Would he be better than, say, Lolagi Visinia? Gillies just turned 32; Lolagi is 29. Totally different players, physically and skill set.

Also saw the announcement of Toyota Verblitz about players that are leaving the club. Tiaan Falcon isn't on the list (but his contract expires this year). The man who kept him out of the 10 jersey most of the time, Lionel Cronje, is leaving. Interested to see what Tiaan Falcon is going to do. He hasn't played much this year and has been very, very quiet on social media. I wonder whether he's injured ...

The black stripe up the sides that appears from time to time was almost too much to take but at least the integrity of the hoops remained intact.
