Canterbury 2022

Marty Bourke to be appointed new coach for 2022.
-
@Chris hopefully he can turn ship around! The past couple of seasons have been very uncantab like.. would be nice if Bridge and Ennor are available for Canterbury this season!
lots of good young forwards to don the red & black jersey in Gallagher, Bell, Kellow, Williams, Newell, Darry☺️ -

I hope Bourke can set some standards up and get them performing up to a decent level. -
@Chris what's his background (for us non Cantabs)?
-
This seemed to be a job nobody wanted.
-
Knew that surname sounded familiar, he's the brother of Bay legend Colin Bourke

He was the attack coach for Canterbury last year .
Before that he was involved coaching with the New York team in the USA.
And was the defence coach for BOP. -

It seemed that way,Canterbury Rugby is a bit of a mess ATM it needs sorting out.

You can see why. There's been three seasons of bad results (not just two) and the fans will judge the 2022 side by the standards of 4+ years ago.
So a coach will get no credit for a big turnaround and even a moderate improvement isn't good enough. Now that Tasman is the premier side in the Crusaders region recruitment and holding quality players is harder. Canterbury should still be near the top, but structurally things are a lot more difficult
-
@Duluth Canterbury went from a team that could put 80 points on southland to then a side that would only beat the stags by the skin of their teeth, I hope the Canterbury of greater days can return, strip prinsep of the Captaincy and let Luke Romano lead by example
-
@FakatavaFuture
2019 - 6 wins 5 losses
2020 - 4 wins 6 losses
2021 - 5 wins 5 lossesIn 3 seasons they have not been able to out perform a coin toss (15 wins 16 losses)
The fact that there are teams like Southland that are essentially amateur makes it even worse
-
The irony is that Canterbury beat the eventual winners in 2020 and 2021.
-
@Duluth grizz wyllie would be non too impressed
-
@Bovidae Canterbury managing to keep the Mako scoreless had me shocked I tell you! Luke Romano put in an immense shift whilst Havili & his men looked as tho they were on a labour weekend bender ( don't recall if it was labour wknd)

Yeah there were some problems within the board as well.
Those seems to be getting better.
It will take a couple of years to get back on track
Tasman has had a major impact on the landscape as you say it has hurt the recruitment process for Canterbury. -
@FakatavaFuture Stuff that haha! They might return but I certainly don't miss seeing them win the comp year after year.

I remember Auckland winning every year through the 1980's by 20 points at least every game.Starting after the great Shield game when Auckland took it back from Grizz's team.
That team use to thump Canterbury by 30 points everytime.
Auckland were miles ahead of everyone in fitness and professionalism.
It took Canterbury 5 or 6 years to catch up. -
@Chris haha true. So how are you guys gonna fit all your locks in now Gallagher coming along and Gardiner as well?
-
@African-Monkey thought Gardiner was a loose forward that can cover lock? he's certainly not a winger😭

Gardiner is a LF really who covers lock.Dunshea out for the season.
So I guess Romano,Gallagher and Darry rotating around the 23.LF looks like a squeeze to. Christie,Harmon,Kellow,Gardiner,Prinseep and Grace.
Plus there are a couple of young LF's in Torian Barnes and George Metheven who deserve a crack. It is really the backs we are shit with donkey's like Mcleod, both Punivai Brothers nothing behind Burke and HB is weak behind Drummond.

They were winning championships immediately before Roberston and immediately after Robertson. In fact, the only Championship they didn't win between 2008 & 2017 was one of the years Roberston was coach
-
@Chris sounds like it's time to bring Alex Nankivell back to chch

Matt Todd added to the Canterbury coaching group for 2022 along with locals back coach Alex Robertson and Craig Dunlea (who was set piece coach last season) under Head Coach Marty Bourke.
-
@Chris Here's the media release:
Canterbury stalwart Matt Todd will also join the coaching staff as he transitions from playing in Japan.
-
@Chris Craig Dunlea i think he was mid canterbury coach a few years back & wow Canterbury's favorite underated son Matt Todd joining the coaching team can only be good news🙂

The hope is he's another Razor, the worry is he's one of the other type of promoted ex player who flops as a coach.

Mock XV. Williams, Mcclaister, Jager, Romano, Gallagher, Harmon, Christie, Grace, Drummond, Burke, George Bridge, Poihipi, Ennor, Mataele, Fihaki
Canterbury to Rise again!! -
@FakatavaAllBlack That should be a pretty good team, epsecially with another ball carrier in the loose forwards. Is Henry Stowers available again?

He’s back playing in Wellington so I’m wondering if he’s signed for the Lions. We are in need of a number 8/6

Jason and Scott Pawson. Are they the Pawsons that played cricket for Shirley? I think Jason played the odd game for Canterbury. If so, I never picked them as rugby coaches/players!

Thanks mate. Played cricket with them for a few years and had no idea they played rugby. Guess I need to take more interest in the lives of others.
