Hurricanes vs Rebels

From what I can gather in the latest Hurricane’s reel on Insta is that the starting front row for this week will be 1. Mafileo 2. Coles 3. Lomax, with PRS, Aumua and Franks coming off the pine.
It looks like Ardie will be rested with Gibson coming into the side. Not too sure who’s at 8, could be Laubsher.

Ok well I can understand Ardie getting a rest, he needs to look after body a bit and looked a bit sore at end of game last week. Laubsher at 8 will be ok I think, but wouldn't mind Gibson being in starting side even at 8, think he's going bloody well.
-
I'd be happy with that. Those 6 as a front row combo is very strong for Super level.
Hopefully we see IWL & Sangster first choice behind them in the coming weeks.

@Duluth resting the two breakout backs this season in Sullivan & Moorby

Seems he is, though I not sure Love isn't as good as Moorby, who didn't look the startling last week.
-
@Dan54 I think canes fans can take great comfort in that Garden bachops days as starting first five are over, seeing as the coaches have shown much faith in Kings college alumni Aidan Morgan

I must admit I think Morgan is coming on a but faster than I thought he would. I actually thought Love would be the 10, but I now think with Morgan and Love we have a couple who are probably better. Though I don't mind Garden-Bachop as a 3rd 10, the experience is handy for a year or two, just as back up.
-
@Dan54 yeah Morgan has shown real promise this year, at only 20 I've been pretty impressed at how he's run the Canes backline. For his size he seems to hold his own on defence aswell which is great.
It's almost safe to say Peter Umaga-Jensen is off. He played for Wainui last week and isn't injured.
-
@Canes4life hopefully to the highlanders then, although good luck shifting BIG AND STRONG Paea from the starting line up.
-
@Bones that would be my guess. A midfield combo with his bro would be pretty sweet for the Highlanders. I hope he goes down there and shows Holland exactly why he was picked for the All Black's in 2020.

Hopefully shows the All Blacks why too....

Howden at no.8? He's big and mobile so will do a job, but he is usually a 6/lock. Laubscher was deserving of another start, or is he injured now too?

He’s got a minor injury. 8 seems to be problem area for the Canes. Iose, Flanders, Laubsher and Savea all injured / have niggles.
Howden is definitely a 6 but I’m sure he can do the job at 8. I’ve never seen him play lock but I’m sure he could.
-
@Canes4life I saw Howden playing lock for the NZ Barbarian schools. Incidentally the hooker in that team was George Bell. I'm not sure if Howden has been used at lock for Manawatu though.
-
@Bovidae he certainly looks like the perfect size to be a quality 6. I know he’s still young so it will be interesting to see how he develops over the next couple years.
-
Poor PUJ.
I agree he must be leaving, but does this mean Jordie must be staying? I think Jordie was only signed for this year.
-
PUJ/Sullivan has Nono/Smith written all over it.
-
@foobaNZ yeah I'd say Jordie will be signed up. The silver lining of PUJ leaving is the rise of Sullivan and the pending introduction of Riley Higgins.
If Jordie shifts into the 12 jersey full time, the Canes will be after a few outside backs knowing Goosen is leaving aswell.
Maybe they should go after someone like Chay Fihaki from the Crusaders or Jacob R.K from the Blues.
The Canes also have Harry Godfrey coming through the system so he will hopefully be in the main squad next year aswell.

Holland explains the continued selection of Barrett at 12.
-
Yes please keep picking the defensive liability that is Savea can’t wait for it to bite us in the ass against the likes of the Chiefs I know Goosen is leaving but he’s soo much better.
-
@mikey07 I wouldn’t mind chucking Moorby on the right combining with Love at 15. Savea is just too much of a liability on defence and the Canes never look good having two big wingers starting.
-
Love is coming back from injury, but looks like he's pretty fit again... 10's his position, so that muppet Holland should've either started him at 10 or put him on the bench instead of JGB, allowing him to come on & play at 1st-five.
It's a bit of a worry we don't have any cover for the midfield if Barrett or Proctor come off injured.
-
@mikey07 said in Hurricanes vs Rebels:

Yeah, J.Savea tends to get caught out flat footed far too much in defence.
-
@NZbloke Love is a 10/15, he’s probably played more at 15 through school / NZ under 20s etc so he’s more than capable. If Jordie moves to 12 permanently then I’m more than happy if Love makes that his position moving forward, especially considering Morgan is making a strong case for that 10 jersey.
Savea or Goosen can come into the centres. The fact PUJ is playing club footy for Wainui today pretty much confirms his departure.
-
@Canes4life what a shame. Where is PUJ going?
-
@canefan to join his bro at the Highlanders is my guess. Otherwise overseas potentially.

I'll be gutted if he is pulling up trees for the Landers next season. Hard to believe he was on the AB fringes not so long ago

Yeah Holland completely destroyed his development. He obviously didn’t see what was so obvious to most of us. Ahh well, I hope he goes down there and plays well for them.

It would be very disappointing if he went overseas. Fingers crossed he goes to another NZ team.

If true, Highlanders could have a pretty strong backline next year (at full strength):
Fakatava, Gilbert, Nareki, TUJ, PUJ, Solomona, CGB... Tomkinson's leaving right?
-
@kiwi_expat bringing back the Scots College trio that won the National title a few years back would be cool. It’s funny though because I always thought all of them would have played for the Canes together.

Happy to be wrong, but I am reserving judgement on Gilbert for a bit. See how he goes against the better teams first.

Do you think there could be an ever bigger opportunity missed by Holland not trying PUJ in the 15 jersey with Jordie currently at 12?
PUJ has played quite a bit of rugby for Wellington at fullback (If remember correctly, was also playing there for NZ U-20's) & it would mean he wouldn't have to worry about defensive & organizational responsibilities in the midfield.
His attacking game & ability to break the line with ease is just too great to not have him playing in the back three at least. Jordan Petaia went a similar way - played in centres then pushed into fullback/wing by his coaches.

So Fidow needs to head south too?
-
@kiwi_expat No, PU-J hasn't played at fullback since 2016 (7 games for Wellington, 1 for NZU20). He's not the one you'd shift to fullback if Jordie is moved to 12. Moorby, Love makes much more sense; maybe even Proctor.
PUJ really is best in the midfield. -
@Stargazer chuck Peter on Julian's wing then, Savea is getting on almost 32 now.
