No, not talking about that band that used to be outstanding but have been bland for about the last 20 years…….

I’m talking about growing the little suckers. I mentioned to the potential future Mrs MN5 that it might be a fun little activity……before I knew it the credit card was out and she ordered a kit off a site on FB. All planted and good to go as of yesterday.

Everything followed to the letter and they’re currently sitting in the hot water cupboard, 12 seeds in total and four different varieties ( Chocolate Devil tongue, Chocolate Reaper, Ghost Mustard and Watrix Yellow )

Given she works from home much more than I do she’ll be putting them on various window sills during the day and then as instructed they’ll be put in the hot water cupboard at night. The site said to water them on day five so will do as I’m told until they start sprouting ( stats say they might not all take )

Once the second lot of leaves appear we’re good to go to put them in the garden. With everything else we have on the go in there we possibly only have space for about five or six plants ( a mate has put his hand up for the others ) but any ferners done this ?

      Any tips etc ?

@MN5 you can just buy some ghost chillis and others from your garden centres, already to go outside!

Obviously a bit more mild up here, but I dont do anything to mine, plant em in planter box, and pick them when red...my ghost chilli is on its second summer now, which is good, plus I still have about 500grams frozen from last year when I made a cracking chilli & crab apple chutney.

That might be the fall back option if ours don’t work out. I think Paremata is a slightly better micro climate than Wellington central but in saying that it still gets windy, rainy and cold as fuck here too ( That was probably real estate wank speak from the agent now I think about it )

How often should I be watering them at this early stage ? A couple feel a bit dry already.

@MN5 Getting the water right is the critical factor in the germination. What are you germinating them on?

If they feel dry I'd give them a light mist from a spray bottle.

I always leave a few chillis on my bushes and have a fair degree of success with self germination, but Wellington is probably too cold for that, given you want to give the plants as long a growing season as possible to develop flavour in the fruit.

Any hint of a frost and it’s good night nurse if they aren’t under a shelter.

I have a rocoto manzano that is about 8 years old. The half that is exposed dies off each winter but the other half that is under the eve grows splendidly.

My favourite flavour of chilli but heat can be variable from nuclear to quite pleasant to eat fresh in a salad

Growing them in the little dirt things that came in the package. Pic for reference !

@MN5 same process as the illegal plants in the foil lined shed with the gro-tubes will work fine. Once about 6 inches high you can take them out for a few hours a day, extending the time according to the weather to harden them .

4 foot on average but during height of season maybe 5 feet.

They are more bush than a tree. Always produced a hundred or so chillies a season.

@Hooroo yeah we barely get frosts up here, think we had 3 very light dustings this year, but where my chillis are (in planter boxes or big pots) def doesnt get touched by any frosts.

@taniwharugby My chillis' are just planted out in the vege garden.

I thought you were the winterless north? I haven't had a frost at my place in 27 years.

@MN5 Definitely keep it moist but not wet.I'd give them a misting when the germinating medium feels dry.

@dogmeat I'm in an open rural area, so we have a nice little micro climate out here, including fog in the middle of summer, and they are looking at moving the airport out here...

@taniwharugby Whangarei has an airport 😲

Seriously Air NZ to Akl and an airline with a well dodgy safety record to the Barrier, Hamilton and Tauranga.

                                Anywhere else?

... a rocking provincial airport on a peninsula that can't be extended right! And a long way from SH1.

Nothing is as foggy as New Plymouth airport. That place gets fogged in all. the. time.

@nzzp yep, well up the end of the Harbour right now....but as always, council failed to do due diligence, bought up land, and have recommended a move, but are now looking at recording weather data for a possible move in 10 years....TBH, it wont impact me directly, and may even improve some of the infrastructure out my way, but as always,, council miss the mark in getting to decisions.
