      2022 NUMBER 8
Nominate the best 8-man of 2022 as follows:

Give reasons in support of your nomination so:

      1. You have some justification for your nomination
      2. We can argue against it

Discussion is encouraged at the nomination stage.

Nominations or alternatives without any opinions for, and arguments against will be treated as bannable offences.

Refer the laws of TOTY stated in the Sports Talk forum

Surname First Name Country Pros Cons
ALDRITT Gregory FRA Forward who makes the greatest number of meters in the world. Very good all the time. Ordinary in some games. Looks good in a dominant team.
SAVEA Ardie NZL Was a beast and held NZ together almost singlehandedly at times. Logical choice. Really grown into the role and suits NZ’s current balance. Standout in an underperforming team. Carried the team on defence and attack. Made most post contact metres of any player in world rugby this year. Produced many clutch moments for turn overs and tries. Unlike Aldritt, in an all conquering undefeated team, Ardie has been the only consistent performer in the ABs. Daylight. Outstanding athlete and has a ridiculous skill set. Complete article. Developed a distinct – non traditional – playing style. Excellent at pilfer. Vastly improved defence. Fitness and impact on attack is without peer. Point of difference. Ordinary in some games. Potentially a very good 7 playing out of position. Quieter versus Scotland. Could up his defence. Not traditional 8.

Ardie Savea would be the logical choice. But he was pretty ordinary in a few games (Scotland, just to name one), so I will go with Alldritt who is the forward who makes the greatest number of meters in the world.

I was thinking Aldritt, just very good all the time. Saves I thought of as a very good 7 playing out of position, but now the balance in the back row is more suited to his game I think he’s really grown into the role. Close call between these two, but I think the Frog shades it.

Not much in the way of reasoned logic, but you can probably argue an attempt, and others have covered for you. General team warning..

OK my reasoning is in an underperforming team, and also often lose trio (cane tackles and nothing else, we have no idea who our 6 is) Ardie has carried the team on defence and attack. He has the most post contact metres of any player in world rugby this year, and has produced many clutch moments for turn overs and tries. Unlike Aldritt, in an all conquering undefeated team, Ardie has been the only conisistant performer in the ABs. As mentioned above quiet versus Scotland, but he was still at a great level - just not his normal unbeleivable level. Without Ardie we would not have Foster as a coach, which is the only reason I would possibly think of anyone else 😉

Try not to go in for being ra-ra-ra about the AB's (and let's face it, there's bugger-all to go ra-ra-ra in this current crop), but the amount of daylight between Ardie Savea and the next challenger is fucking ridiculous.

The only two players that deserve that level of ra-ra-ra are Savea and Samisoni. For me, they are the two standout All Blacks for 2022.

He's the outstanding athlete and has a ridiculous skill set, but is he head and shoulders the best No8? He reminds me of Beauden Barrett of a year or so ago; freakish athlete and you want him in your team AND you want to get the ball to him as much as possible, but was he actually a great fly half?

There were always weaknesses and a touch of flakiness in BB - even at his pomp. I just don't see that with Ardie. He's the complete article for me.

Maybe for me it’s that he doesn’t seem like a classical No8, though as I’ve said previously, I feel he has grown into that role. He seems instinctively a 7 to me, but much has changed over the last year. For me, this year, Aldritt shades it. If Savea’s trajectory doesn’t invert, then next year will likely be quite different.

I'm very partial to this take, because i am a little to traditional in my view of loose forwards

But A Savea is playing his game in an 8 jersey, and it's unique and very special and quite frankly that means a lot. I'll be voting for him, simply because i have chosen to adjust my thinking.

Oh to see Savea and Lawes operating in the same trio

I've consistently criticised Ardie for not being involved enough in defence as a No. 8. I agree that he plays like a openside in that regard - ruck watching for opportunities to pilfer (something he's admittedly excellent at). Having lamented his lack of defensive work, this year he has vastly improved on that aspect. His fitness and impact on attack is without peer.

I go for Ardie, with all due respect to those that they say he not a trsditional N0 8 etc, I understand your point, but we say how players play, we don't need to clone them. I recall a fella that moved to wing who wasn't your traditional wing, soeme may recall him think he was called Jonah Lomu. Ftzpatrick wasn't a traditional hooket etc etc. As I said I know where you coming from, but I like us having a point of difference.

Easiest choice so far. Ardie has made big progress since 2019. Weird decision by World Rugby not to shortlist him for World Player of The Year.
