Surname First Name Country Pros Cons van der FLIER Josh IRE Better than Kolisi. Has been an all-action superstar for Ireland all year. 20+ tackles a test. Busy at the breakdown. Scored the winning try against South Africa. WR POTY “Better than Kolisi.” “Didn’t deserve POTY.” KOLISI Siya RSA Tackles lots. Compared to Dusutoir. Good toiler Possibly a significantly better leader than he is a player. Compared to Dusautoir and Thorne. Not much more than tackles. Not seen Kolisi live up to the hype. Good toiler. PAPALII Dalton NZL Limited opportunities but best openside during the EOY Internationals Limited opportunities -
Van der Flier. Shame the Lions was a year too soon for him.
-
Kolisi
Captain fantastic
-
Van der Flier by a whisker, because Kolisi was not performing greatly during the RC.
-
I don't ever get the fawning over Kolisi. Good solid player, but that's about it. It feels like reverse snobbery on teh NZ part. If he played in black this forum would be rubbishing him and calling for a player with a bit more.
He's like Dusautoir, tackles lots and for some reason people fucking love him for it. Reuben Thorne in nearly a fucking swear word in NZ rugby despite being the friggen same.
-
Off limited opportunities all year, but was there a better openside during the EOY seasonal sightseeing jaunt up North than Dalton?

I think Dalton Papali'i might end up having the better career, but JVDF was the better international player in 2022.
-
@mariner4life significantly better leader than he is a player?
Yeah I've not seen Kolisi live up to the hype, although I did rate Dusautoir as a player and captain.

I always thought he was a good toiler that had a standout game every now and then but wasn’t a player that was regularly in the top 3 players on the pitch discussion like other quality players.
-
Josh Van Der Flier. Didn't deserve player of the year, but must have been somewhat good for the bigwigs to nominate him

Van de Flier. If the Lions had benn touring this year, he’d be one of the first names on the list. Papalii loos good and added some balance in the NZ back row but too small a sample size.
