The momentum behind the red peak design is in its simplicity. People have come around to realizing that a flag needs to be recognizable on a small scale and easily drawn. All respect to the panel members but for some inexplicable reason they completely missed these points. Throw in some added subtle Maori symbolism and links to NZ's heritage and environment and any basic design is a winner. It's ridiculous that we have to choose from three variations of a complicated fern design and a black and white koru. Hopefully common sense prevails and we have additional options to vote on or this is a massive opportunity lost.

Thanks for sharing. I caught the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds show in Calgary recently and it was something else. Can't wait to see this. -

Speaking of Nirvana, I thought Lorde did a reasonable job filling in for Kurt here:
Unfuckingbelievable documentary, but apparently true story about a French sociopathic con-artist who deserves many good hard kicks to the testicles, and a desperate American family willing to believe anything in the face of trauma. Made by the same producer as the brilliant "Man on Wire." There are a few red-herrings and dramatic recreations that are puzzling, but I couldn't pull my eyes away. 9/10.
I loved that movie too. There is another movie out there that is a dramatization of this same story. Apparently it is awful. -
Argo was very watchable but it pissed me off that they made so much shit up. I don't like films that are only based on reality. Ben Affleck looks out the plane window to see machine-gun-wielding Iranians trying to take down the plane just as it takes off...really?

That is crazy. Saw another one that recorded the sonic boom and windows shattering but can't find it on YouTube. Would have scared the bejesus out of me.

There's some useful info on Wikipedia about the making of the film. Interesting that they got to film that terrorist bomb scene on Fleet Street just a month after the 2005 tube and bus bombings.
Finally got around to seeing Children of Men last night. Not usually a fan of Clive Owen's monotone acting, but he was made for this film. It's a gritty sci film, in a similar vein to Bladerunner, District 9 and 28 Days later. Set in England in 2027, in a world where every woman is infertile and immigrants are vilified and forced into prison ghettos, Owen has to help protect a pregnant immigrant girl. Never mind the story though, because the action and cinematography are jaw dropping. One single-shot action scene towards the end is absolutely amazing. Definitely one of the best movies I've seen in a while. Can't believe I missed it when it came out in cinemas.
were some from 2009 as well I think...but jeez, good reminder how good the likes of Sivi, Jane & mils are, 3 maligned players many are saying are gone...that fend of Janes, love it!
You're right. This one's even better (complete with Inception music soundtrack):
Not sure if this has already been posted elsewhere, but this a nice piece of video editing showing some of the best All Black tries from last year from some interesting camera angles. If you can get past the gratuitous use of a movie soundtrack in the beginning it's brilliant viewing:
That riot camera is very cool. I'm surprised none of the rioters had the wherewithal to steal it or set it on fire.
As for the soccer vid, I don't have a problem with the American embelishing his dive in that instance because he was clearly impeded on a one on one run at the goal. The Jamaican missed the ball and connected with the back leg of the Yank player. Had he stayed on his feet the ref might have missed it. -
This could have been on the Stanley Cup thread. It's what happens when you think it's cool to hang around and watch a riot:
Sounds pretty good. Another 90s artist back after a long hiatus is PJ Harvey. The new album is worth a listen. This is one of the first tracks off it:
I watched Source Code over the weekend and loved it. It's no special effects extravaganza, just a really interesting sci-fi story. Jake Gyllenhall stars as a US military helicopter pilot involved in an operation to figure out who bombed a train bound for Chicago. The sci-fi part is that he has to review the last 8-minutes of memory of one of the dead passengers to figure out who did it. It starts off seeimg like a bizarre version of Groundhog Day but it really is unique and worth seeing. 8.5/10.

127 Hours: a very good survival story about Aron Ralston, the guy who had to cut off his own arm or else die under a rock that trapped him in a canyon. The arm cutting scene is pretty gruesome but not over the top. Riveting and inspirational stuff. 8/10.
