@gt12 Bean Counters: The triumph of the accountants and how they broke capitalism. By Richard Brooks
It's okay, I'm only a 3rd of the way through, still in the history lesson stage. I'm interested to see his conclusions (although I can already guess)
Next on the list is Utopia for Realists. Pretty sure I'm not going to agree with many of that authors views, but I'm reading to broaden my understanding of the other side of my economic beliefs.

@Stockcar86 interesting article, thanks. Copernicus always make me think of the start of the first Blackadder
"History has known many great liars. Copernicus, Goebbels, St. Ralph the Liar. But there have been none quite so vile as the Tudor King Henry VII."

Survivorship bias
A really long article, but lots of interesting history revealed on the way
Probably the best well known story about survivorship bias was where to armor planes during WW2 - when they were examining returning planes, they decided it was best not t put armor not where there are holes, but where there are no holes, since that’s where planes can’t survive getting shot
Makes me think about anti-vaxxers - arguing that their grandparents never got vaccinated and survived just fine
-
@Stockcar86 Drawing a long bow, but an fairly extraordinary fact is that the descendants of those who survived bubonic plague (in villages infected with it) are highly resistant to HIV.

I listened to the Podcast of this first (which could go in the podcast thread) - it's about a crazy Zimbabwean criminal who started off selling online legal pills somewhat illegally before.
Whoops, here's the main page: https://magazine.atavist.com/the-mastermind

Not sure what thread to put this in
firstly, Lori Laughlin has not aged a day
2nd, are we supposed to be surprised people who can afford to, are paying more to get their kids in to a good school? How is that even news? Fuck, i would do it. Anyone who says they wouldn't either doesn't have kids, or is a liar.
This is what you get for a system that cares more about what the name of the school is than anything else.

That’s deep man . I was just wondering how long Lori has to be in jail before she goes gay for the stay ?

This is worth listening to. Doyle comes across as a very smart guy , he’s aware Titiana will eventually run its course and then he’ll create something else .

@Salacious-Crumb have you read the reviews on Amazon ?

Finished Utopia for Realists, and How We Get There by Rutger Bregman
Basically Rutger is a rabid lefty socialist, and this is his thoughts on the future for people.
As i expected, I don't agree with a number of his conclusions or points, but, the book did make me think about a number of things/attitudes/beliefs i have always taken for granted, and have a think about why i hold those attitudes.
It's pretty light on real, thought out solutions, but then i don't think that is his overall aim. It's also well researched to find the statistics that help his view.
The surprise to me was how far he varies from the rabid lefties we hear from so much these days. A lot of his points mirror things said by our righties on here. He also spends a chapter decrying the victim mentality of what he calls the "underdog socialist".
So. i found it an interesting read, if only to have a look at an outlook at odds with my own. It helps that he is an engaging and enthusiastic writer, so it stays light throughout (to its detriment at times).
