@MN5 to be fair, most people would battle to name another Deep Purple song (I personally love Highway Star, but that's hardly an obscure choice)
As an aside, Use Your Illusion is a bloated mess.
I certainly don't agree with that, "Black Night" "Women from Tokyo" "Speed King" "Hush" "Space Truckin"......every one a staple on rock radio.
Definitely not in the Led Zep stratosphere but they were a fucken massive group.
Richies guitar work in "Highway Star" is absolutely exceptional.

@MN5 the Epic thing drives me nuts. It's not even close to the best track on the album it's off. And yet there it is, FNM's only song apparently.
On that album alone I'd go:
War Pigs
Falling to Pieces
The Real Thing -

The Real Thing"Woodpecker from Mars" is a great instrumental and you can't go past "From out of Nowhere"
I'm amazed "The Real Thing" isn't much better known. It is one of my favourite ever rock songs.

@antipodean not bad.
The Real Thing is in my top 5 favourite songs of all time, so it pretty obviously comes in to 1st. Falling to Pieces 2nd. 3rd at a pinch is probably From out of Nowhere.
I have a massive soft spot for Surprise! You're Dead! as well

I reckon that's pretty weak compared to the rest of the album.
Some reckon Angel Dust was an even better follow up. I'd probably rate them about even.
To echo your sentiments about "The Real Thing" it is truly one of those epic ( excuse the shit pun ) tracks that every single person I have played it to absolutely loves. To me it's one of those tunes that should be fighting it out for a top 10 spot in the Rock 1500.

I have listened to Appetite a LOT this week.
And i am now firmly of the view that the first 6 songs are up there with the first 6 songs of any record ever. Let alone a debut record. What an opening to a career. And i am completely unsurprised that they just exploded. Had anybody heard anything like it in 1987? It's not metal, it's not punk, what we know as alternative music didn't exist, it's just raw and dirty, but with an amazing groove to it.
And having listened to both Illusion records, they were not even close to recapturing that spirit. It's an over-long, over-produced bloated mess. And that's not surprising given the state of them by that point.

I'm probably repeating myself ( in fact I know I am ) but it doesn't sound "80s"......it's timeless......the kind of record that could be released now and sound as fresh and exciting as back in 87.

Not really.....compare it to "Purple Rain" which I love equally but which sounds as 80s as neon lights and tassels on denim.
AFS is pretty unique in that regard.

So tonight's drive time sounded like this....
Long time no hear, and was particularly enjoyable at "Powerplay", I had a good go on my air saxa-ma-phone through "I still believe" but seriously not one song on this album that I do not love.
Smoothly followed by The Doors best of album.
Belongs in a Hawwwt RIP thread -

I missed this discussion last week. I never got into the Use Your Illusions after loving Appetite and GnR Lies.
My favourite from Appetite:
On FNM, I like Epic even if it's not one of the best on the album.
I used to have a video with Bill and Teds on it and then when that finished it had Faith No More's Brixton Academy concert - so I watched it a lot.

Faith no More killed it in that Brixton concert......"We care a lot" being a higlight for me.
