Yip, that video proves the point - centre (and a great centrre at that) fucks up, Fern go to town on Dagg.

Fullbacks only have to make a couple of tackles a game. So if you fuck up it's remembered.

We were very lucky with Mils because more often than not he would make those desperation attempts.

Dagg misses quite a few more.

Conrad gets a pass because we see him getting through a shit ton of defensive work. so the odd howler is forgiven.

I would suggest if Dagg's defensive game was on point he wouldn't have been on the outer last year (he missed the WC squad in case his fluffers forgot), despite a lack of attacking edge.
-

I feel he missed out because he is a specialist 15. And in a WC squad if you aren't the starting 15, you don't get to go as a specialist, not with Barrett & NMS providing cover there.
-

I certainly recall Mils missing tackles, front on and desperation attempts, that have been costly as well. But that doesn't mean he wasn't a good enough defender at test level.

Yep Dagg has had some poor misses as well and I've yelled at the TV, but Dagg appears to have polarised posters on here so the drums beat louder. -

Cully never missed a tackle in his life.

That's funny cos it's partially true. He was actually a very good defender and quite handy on attack too.
-

Everyone remembers Mils missing tackles because it hardly happened. He was safe as houses under the high ball and was an awesome defender. If anything, Mils was more known for his defence rather than running game.

If he missed a tackle, it stuck out like a sore thumb.

I still remember when Rico Gear skinned him on the outside, because that just didn't really happen. One on one you backed Mils to make the tackle.
-

I think Cullys pace managed to paper over some of his positioning issues on d.
-

And they'd flag it by picking 3 other guys who can play 13 & giving them a run there...

i reckon that is far more a reflection of lack of ball security in the tackle - those errors kill us - and perhaps offensive decision-making.

i think his defensive judgement is generally pretty good. he hits hard and doesn't miss often, he's always looking to hold guys up and/or rip the ball away, and he flies up out of the line when it's necessary. he gets the latter wrong very occasionally, not much.

it's his work when he's got the ball that i think needs sorting out.
-

it doesn't really matter how you get there as long as you are there, and at fullback getting there late is often a good thing - in that you're limiting the opposition's other options by being somewhere else.

i think because he was such an incredible runner that people don't give him much credit for other areas. his tackling was great, and he was very seldom caught out of position. his only real weakness was kicking in my opinion, but then, if you're christian cullen, why would you fucking kick it?
-

few rugby players attacking game was even close to Cully's!

I don't actually think kicking was as big a weakness as made out, he had a decent punt, not Dagg/Lowe cannon levels but probably better than Mils. As you note he just didn't need to most of the time.

he wasn't terrible or anything, but it wasn't great. guys like greg and matt cooper were better at that aspect. i think mils kicking was also a weakness to be fair.
