Hurricanes v Cheetahs

@Rancid-Schnitzel Aso is not a crap centre. His defence has been shown up at times and is a major work on for him. If he could defend properly then a lot of people would be saying he should be in the All Blacks. He's a good centre, even with a few deficiencies.

Yes but he can't defend or pass properly. Therefore he is not a good centre. Proctor is a what a good centre looks like. Aso belongs on the wing.

30mins in.
Canes have penalty. Into corner. Good lineout drive collapsed by Cheetahs. Canes penalty 5m out.
Canes go for lineout to set up a maul.
(Maul gets stopped twice and TJ yold to use it. But this is not my point. )
Now my question is why bother with the lineout to set up a maul? Unless you're looking for a Willy Away type move not just set up a maul off a tap?
You're already only 5m out.
Just a thunk.

Seems the lineout drive is considered a low-risk play which is a bit weird since most get stopped now. Legacy of the Brumbies cocktrain perhaps?

@booboo yeah i'm with you, just gives the attacking team another opportunity to fuck it up by messing up the lineout without gaining any territory. plus closer to the sideline which reduces options.
a smart play would be a quick couple of passes to a pod of forwards in centre field. -

Forgot to mention this last night, and no doubt @Stargazer and @Higgins will chuckle as well, Hugh Renton plays his first match for the Canes in his 3rd season and ends the match as captain. Also, he needs to be told by one of the other players he is captain too.
Is he the first Magpie captain of the Canes? Is this a beginning of a new era where our players don't all wind up at different franchises? Are we the new Naki?
-
@Nepia Ha, yes, I noticed the ref asking who the captain was and they all pointed at Renton. I was quite surprised to say the least. Have no idea whether he was the first Magpie as Canes captain.
A new era at the Canes? Hmm, I'll believe it if more current Shield Snorters get contracts, and more importantly, game time.
-
@Higgins Yeah, true. Canes should lock Falcon in, esp if Otere Black leaves. Not sure whether any of the other Bay boys in the NZU20s are ready to make the step up. Unless new players make a good case for the last available SR spots, I can't think of more names. I rate Tangaere, maybe if he has a good season? Emerson? Geez, we've lost so many players ...
