2020 School Rugby

  • Wow, SBC lost to Waimea Combined. That's a shocker. I wonder if being an away game they had some guys who didn't travel? Wow.

Meanwhile that CC vs CBHS game was an absolute stonker. I despise the Syrups marginally less than the Jersey Pullers so I enjoyed it greatly. And there was even celebrity offspring playing half back for Christ's, for extra interest.

I always wonder why families change schools. The Hammett lads went to St Thomas's but now Chris Hammetts' son is at CC. Mark and Chris' sister went to Villa Maria so maybe that was just the Catholic upbringing now having lapsed a generation on. Similarly, a mate's son was on the bench for CC. The Dad went to St Bedes but sent his sons to CC for the post-quake facilities which Bedes lacked. I'm not sure what Jason Gunns' story is though 🙂

  • Highlights Mahurangi v Rangitoto

  • St John's beating St Paul's (playing at home) is a huge upset in the CNI. Maybe I should of went along.

  • St Bedes beat the previously unbeaten Christs College (after losing to Waimea last week, no less!)

    CBHS another loss??

And Goon HS beat Marlborough BC, wow.

  • Good win for PNBHS

    Oops SBHS beat CBHS

  • @shark nah chch boys won 29-23

  • @chchfanatic Yeah i got it wrong s second time when I tried to correct myself

  • Highlights from today's game. Spot the former Kings HS old boy.

  • very short list of blokes i can forgive for being King old boys...often conditional on level of rugby ability

  • @Kiwiwomble Plenty of bogans down south with those haircuts.

  • @Bovidae yeah, those mullets arent ironic

    good result for OBHS!

  • St Paul's are playing Feilding HS in Taupo on Sat even though they are in different sections of the CNI. Both have a bye.

  • Hamilton BHS 17 (5) - Palmerston North BHS 10 (3)

PNBHS played with a strong wind in the 1st half but didn't really look like scoring a try. Ham BHS scored just before HT from a tighthead near the Palmy goal line. The 2nd half was more even but Ham BHS scored 2 further tries, the last from a break near halfway where 1st 5 Kemara kicked ahead and regathered to score under the posts, to lead 17-3. Palmy finally crossed the line with a couple of minutes to play despite some outstanding defence from Ham BHS for 2-3 mins near their line. The ref then played a lot of added time and blew his pea out of the whistle so Palmy ended camped in Ham BHS's half before a final knock-on sealed the match.

PNBHS have some giants in their team. Both starting props are Tameifuna-like in size, and their midfield duo are both 100 kg+. A good result for Ham BHS with 5 regular starters missing, including their captain.

It took some searching but 45-26 to Feilding.

  • Jeez what are Kaipara doing in the Harbour 1A, -288 points differential after 5 games. The reason Whangarei Boys left NLD rugby comp was because there is no decent competition, and that's not changed

  • Mates and I went over to Rotovegas to watch Rotorua BHS vs Hamilton BHS. Nick Briant was the ref in this game.

A strong wind favoured RBHS in the 1st half and they started strongly scoring an early try. Ham BHS hit back with 2 tries to led 12-8 at HT. Ham BHS didn't really use the wind to their advantage in the 2nd half but scored 4 more tries to win 36-18. There was a nasty injury to the RBHS centre midway through the 2nd half which stopped play for a while.

  • @Machpants I watched WBHS yesterday v Rosmini.

Boys got dusted, but geez they had some shit luck and decisions in the opening quarter (shoulda picked up 2 tries) and thier lineout was such that Rosmini could kick it out to get the ball back.

Thought Boys looked the equal of Rosmini for the most, but lacked polish.

Were camped on the Rosmini line for long periods but couldn't break through.

Liked the Boys centre and 7.

The Rosmini 15 has serious gas though, and the Boys 10 kicked it straight down his throat a couple of times.

Saw one absolute howler of a TJ call.

Rosmini kicked it, the Boys winger tried to keep it in, may have put a foot in touch.

One of the Rosmini coaches stalking the sideline convinced the TJ to put his flag up about 5 sec after the ball had moved on, Boys in possession.

About 6 or 7 phases later, flag still up, Rosmini turned the ball over, 2 phases, their 15 makes a break.

Coach on sideline line, oh it's just play on now, surely? Come on play on.

    TJ takes arm down.

2 phases later Rosmini score (which was the first score I think)

    Shocking.

  • The UC Championship has seen the traditional cream rise to the top as the top four now consists of STAC, CBHS, St Bedes and Christs College. Ramgiora HS are in fifth but Nelson College have a game in hand in sixth place and could sneak into the top four after their midweek game vs Shirley's A Girl's Name.

  • I don't get to watch much first 15 rugby but did catch the Grammar versing King's match yesterday. Incredible skills from both sides. Doyle, King's full back had a blinder. He's pretty small but great to watch.

Sadly my team was pipped at the post but seriously good entertainment. Before I get any "silver spoon" type comments - I had a scholarship and even half price was tough for my folks.

It was actually compulsory to go to that game back in my day, not sure if it still is, but they had a huge crowd.

  • Geez the Auckland 1A comp is tight. No finals comp either so a real arm wrestle.

  • think it was the 5 for Kings, is the 2nd youngest of Tony Monaghans 4 boys.

Be interesting next year and year after, a couple of boys I know from up here are on scholarships to AGS, plus a couple others I know who were pretty handy players

ONe boy in particular an outstanding prospect, but needs to grow!
