Hawkes Bay v Auckland

  • All might be well guys. I engaged in deep and meaningful conversation with a couple of missionaries today and they promised they would have a word with their boss to see if that might tip the scales in the Bay's favour. They did say however that they had witnessed HBs somewhat disappointing efforts so far and were doubtful whether even he has strong enough powers to rectify the deficencies sufficiently enough to turn the outcome in our favour through devine inspiration!

It might be clutching at straws, but it's about the best hope we have got, so fingers crossed - don't hold your breath though.

  • Team should be named tomorrow.

Can't have God on our side, that would be 16 against 15 .... but where would you put Him?

  • Like God would ever take our side against Auckland and their God squad players.

    😢

I would seriously consider naming him at No 8 but could possibly be persuaded to petition for him to take the referees whistle if he promises to be as impartial as Gert Bezeidenhuit, Piet Robertzee or Ian Gourlay.

  • Magpies team to play Auckland:

    1. Ricky Riccitelli
    2. Ash Dixon (c)
    3. Ben May
    4. Geoff Cridge
    5. Mark Abbott
    6. Trent Boswell-Wakefield
    7. Tony Lamborn
    8. Fa'alemiga Selesele
    9. Brad Weber
    10. Ihaia West
    11. Mason Emerson
    12. Tiaan Falcon
    13. Jonah Lowe
    14. Robbie Fruean
    15. Ryan Tongia

    Reserves:
    16. Jorian Tangaere 17. Jason Long 18. Tolu Fahamokioa 19. Ross Filipo 20. Ben Hamelink 21. Chris Eaton 22. Billy Ropiha 23. Matt Garland

So Lamborn is back, and Hamelink returns to the bench, and Renton is out of the 23. Falcon and Ropiha swapped, and Eaton on the bench for Wilson.

  • This whole season thus far comes down to 1 thing. Poss poor planning . Everybody knew the players we were Losing And What Positions We Were Lacking. Weber and McNicholl are both very good players but what use are they if the midfield and pack can not create the space they need. I'm terms of experience at this level Jonah and Billy are green. You cannot replace Buckman and Horrell overnight but whilst your developing these 2 surely you'd bring an experienced player in to guide these guys. Fruean in my opinion needs to go to the midfield given he's had a lot more experience there. Jonah played well on the wing at the under 20s world cup, and what is there to lose at this stage. I refuse to believe the Union never had the money to buy in players they needed. As pessimistic as it may sound this is taking on 2012 all over again. And it's not acceptable.

  • Ahh yes, Mr. Philpott's first season and he won us relegation! If you want to forget how bad that was just look away now but if you want to be reminded how bad it was just look below

    Hawkes Bay 29 - 36 Auckland
    Wellington 30 – 15 Hawkes Bay
    Hawkes Bay 37 – 30 Counties-Manukau*
    Taranaki 22 – 06 Hawkes Bay
    Southland* 35 – 07 Hawkes Bay
Hawkes Bay 42 – 41 Bay of Plenty
    Hawkes Bay 21 - 15 Otago*
    Manawatu* 20 – 07 Hawkes Bay
    Hawkes Bay 03 – 44 Canterbury
    Waikato 28 – 03 Hawkes Bay
Crossover matches against Championship level teams are marked *

At least there were no 50 pointers at home in 2012, unlike the Counties match this time. The Southland result must have been particularly hard to take!

  • If we get relegated which seems a very likely occurrence , surely this guy has to go.

Argghhh, I was at that horrible game v Manawatu. Rain was pouring down in biblical proportions and it was one of the most miserable games I'd ever been to. But at least they got three wins that season (2 against Ch'ship teams); can they -at least- replicate that this season?

Last season, the coaches more or less "gave away" the game v Canterbury by naming one of the most inexperienced selections of the season. Not sure whether it is possible to name an even more inexperienced team this year (the same guys are now starters), but I really hope they won't do that again this year or we will end up with >70 points for Canterbury on the score board. I don't want to have nightmares until the start of Super Rugby.

    That is absolute excrement.

    The Magpies team was:
    15 Dagg
    14 Tongia
    13 Lowe
    12 Horrell
    11 Chase
    10 West
    9 Eaton
    8 O'Connor
    7 Lamborn
    6 Abbott
    5 Waqa
    4 Allardice
    3 Aoake
    2 Tangaere
    1 Edmonds

Subs Fruean, Ropiha, Wilson, Sweet, Stanley, Braidwood, Fahamokioa, Sosene-Feagai.
Was Fruean's first game of the season.
Dixon and Buckman were out injured.
    Guildford was suspended.
Boswell-Wakefield wasn't there because he was attending a wedding

How was the lineup some kind of "give away" of the game?

Who wasn't there when they were available for the match but deliberately weren't picked as you have clearly inferred?

If you want to criticise the coach for something, by all means do, but don't make things up.

  • Mea culpa, mea culpa. You're right, I must have remembered it differently than it actually was or it was another game/year.

The biggest point of criticism at the time of selection was moving Abbott to 6, while Stanley was available. There were a lot of inexperienced players in that selection (starters Lowe, Waqa, Tangaere, and on the bench Sosene-Faegai & Sweet in addition to first year players such as Aoake, Ropiha and Braidwood), but I'd forgotten about Dixon & Buckman being injured and TBW being unavailable.

  • That was then, but geez if we don't improve dramatically what will the result be this year.

  • @Stargazer I don't know why you're complaining about the one time Stanley didn't get selected - he had way more games than his ability was worth.

  • @Nepia said in Hawkes Bay v Auckland:

Unlike you, I don't think Stanley was that bad. What annoyed me most was that - because of his selection (in other games) - TBW didn't get as much game time as I think he should have had. I've never understood why Stanley was picked over TBW.
As to this game, I wasn't complaining about Stanley being named on the bench, but about Abbott unnecessarily being moved to another position than lock.

  • An extremely promising start from the Bay - its still nil nil after three minutes

  • Followed up by a near try to Ihaia West, admittedely against the run of play and from a long way out, but hey it did get me yelling in encouragement.

  • And here comes an almost certain three nil with West to attempt a penalty from a real handy position

  • A clear offside right in front of the referee in front of the posts by Auckland No 6 from a driving maul - not awarded for some reason.....................

  • You guys playing the far better rugby so far. Deserved lead for Hawkes Bay.

  • TRY HB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ihaia West charges down a clearing kick byJono West and scores a much appreciated try (at least in this lounge anyway) Hawkes Bay 08 - 00 Auckland after fifteen minutes

  • Amazing what a difference West having a good game makes. Am liking Falcon at 2nd 5 - less one dimensional than Ropiha

  • And now another easy kickable penalty for Ihaia West who will soon make it HB 11 - 00 AUckland after 20 minutes

  • But somehow he miraculously manages to miss it - How is that possible I mean we can send a man to the moon and land him in the desired spot yet manage to miss the targe from a mere twenty metres.

  • Get some halves, Auckland!

  • @Tim Probably a front row too

  • Auckland are starting to come back into the game now they are starting to win a bit of possession and they also kick a penalty into the southerly to make the score HB 08 - 03 Auckland after about 22 minutes

  • FFS we have been awful so far.

  • Two shite teams on a bad day?

  • Too late - I was screaming for West to take the drop kick conversion quickly

  • Clear foot in touch. Hawkes Bay should have waited some phases before scoring or taken the quick drop goal.

  • @Higgins I said to nepia that I could see us getting our pants pulled down in this one and with the way we've played so far it looks like it could happen.

  • A beautiful try to Ryan Tongia about to be ruled out damn it all but can't argue about the mere touching on the sideline which is belatedly spotted by Mr. Dockary the TMO.

  • After the try is ruled out Ioane makes a big break and looks likely to score but gets cut down by Matt Garland. The Bay scamper back and nearly score through Brad Weber. From the ensuing penalty West knocks it over from wideish out on the left hand side of the field HB 11 - 03 Auckland at half time. Auckland to have the wind in the second half

  • Ryan Tongia is the human speed bump. Expert at slowing people down but stopping anyone. that 13/14 channel is a bit worrying at the moment. Going to need to build some phases this half .

  • The forwards are going a bit better than we have seen so far, and the scrum getting a tentative pass mark at this stage. The tackling still has me clenching my cheeks every time Auckland get their hands on the ball in a bit of space but so far it has held, if only just on a number of occasions.

  • Still pretty nervous, our second 40 has been crap all year

  • Three Hurricanes locks on the field tonight with Mark Abbot sowhing plenty of industry about the field. Michael Fatialofa has been pretty anonymous for Auckland so far. Geoffrey Cridge still to convince me he is a Super Rugby player, but at least we are getting to see him play so have, at last, something to judge him by.

  • Fifty minutes now gone and the wheels have not yet fallen off the Bay. In fact very unlucky not to score after Matt Garland intercepts a R Ioane pass and gets an offload away to West who promptly drops the pass.

  • Damn Mark Abbot held up over the line after the restart from a Hickey successful penalty
