You’d have to put Pele and The Babe pretty close to the top I’d say, all-time superstars and most people don’t know their real names.

Proper nicknames or other nicknames? If other nicknames then Maori Jesus has to slot in somewhere in the backs.

Former Liverpool FC Captain, Emlyn "Crazy Horse" Hughes, was outspoken and wasn't always popular with his own team mates. Tommy "The Tank" Smith the ex Liverpool full back is an after dinner speaker. He tells a story that in one game against Chelsea, Ron 'Chopper' Harris tackled Emlyn Hughes and caught him in the chest with his studs. While Emlyn Hughes was being treated, several Liverpool players sidled up to Ron Harris and shook his hand.

Bill Shankley and his staff in the Liverpool Boot Room gave Emlyn Hughes the nickname "Thrush". Hughes thought it was because he had a high voice. In fact, it was because several of the staff at Liverpool thought he was an irritating c**t.

There was an Aussie rugby player who’s nickname was mangrove. Because he was an indiscriminating rooting system.
