I expected Ozich to rotate more players, because the game against Southland is the most obvious game you can do that. Not so. The most notable change is at TH prop. It's Waa's first start; Hintz takes place on the bench and no Ben May. Injured again? Another one is Josh Kaifa starting at openside instead of O'Connor, who has been named on the bench. Allardice and Parsons have swapped jerseys, and so have Flanders and Cridge; Allardice and Flanders are starting at 5 and 6, and Parsons and Cridge have been named on the bench.

No changes in the backs. Again a 6-2 split on the bench. I had hoped to see Tyrone Dodd-Edwards to get his first game time from the bench, but Sapsford gets the 23 jersey.

    From the HBT:

Hawke's Bay Magpies rugby centre Stacey Ili will be given until kick-off to prove he is ready for tomorrow's Mitre 10 Cup Championship clash against the Southland Stags at Napier's McLean Park.

Magpies head coach Mark Ozich said Ili has responded well during the past 24 hours to treatment on the charlie he collected during last weekend's 43-28 victory against Northland in Whangarei.

"I would rank his chances as 50-50 at this stage but we've decided to give him until game day to prove his fitness," Ozich said.

Should Ili fail his fitness test in the pre-match warm-up Neria Fomai will move from the right wing to centre, Ollie Sapsford will start on the right wing and Timo Vaiusu will replace Sapsford on the subs bench. Should Vaiusu get game time it will be his first class debut for the Magpies who are unbeaten and top of the Championship points table with 18 points out of a possible 20.

Maori All Black and Hurricanes prop Ben May is unavailable for the Magpies with a bout of the flu and will be replaced by former Maori All Black, Blues and Northland prop Namatahi Waa. This will be Waa's first starting XV appearance for the Magpies.

Just seen a shot of the crowd. Hell even though it is the Bay you would not want to draw Southland, who are not exactly the world's biggest drawcard, at home on a wintery day too often. There are almost as many people in my lounge as there are sitting in the Harris Stand. Two minutes to go, just enought time for another listen to Bob Houston singing "There's something about a magpie" just one more time.

Whew, a narrow escape of avoiding the embarrassment of letting Southland off nil through a try. TMO (don't think it is Mr. Dockery tonight) and ref decide an obstruction on the Bay No. 8 prevented him making a tackle.

Geez, this is messy. I know it's wet, but they should do better.

The decision to reverse the try was correct ,but once again it brings into question the officiating, last week we saw Otere Black in the shield challenge get taken out in a defensive line and nothing happens..all you ask for consistency..!

Great try from Evans. Good guys take the lead.

Kaifa replaced by O'Connor, not sure why.

Not likely as Sosuthland do have the advantage of what looks to be a pretty chilly Sou Westerly behind them.
Fie nil to the Bay after about 15 minutes thanks to a bit of a scabby sort of try from deep on defence to Gareth Evans. Josh Kaifa looks to be gone after a spectacular takcel he carried out has resulted in what looks to be a fairly painful shoulder injury
