The bike track I ride on has a couple of long stretches uphill Luigi - I get on next to a motorway exit so I start basically in a low-level area and have to ride my fat arse uphill for the first few km in any direction <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':blink:' /><br />
<br />
Mix it up between spinning and grinding depending how attacking I'm feeling <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol:' />

Been a while since I measured my carcass. My original measurements:<br />
<br />
<br />
Chest: 120cm (across the nip-nips)<br />
Gut: 117cm (belly button)<br />
Arse: 125cm (same level as the mummy-daddy button)<br />
<br />
<br />
:nta At present:<br />
<br />
Chest: 124cm (PLUS 4cm)<br />
Gut: 114cm (-3cm)<br />
Arse: 122cm (-3cm)<br />
<br />
No idea why that is, though I have been doing pushups of late and wasn't carrying a lot of muscle in the chest area at the start of the year. I will press on (pun intended)<br />
<br />
On the other hand, my original weight at the start of the year was around the 120kg mark, and I'm now consistently hitting 112 :happy:

Just got back from a 20km ride. Again hit just below the 48 minute mark which is good backup from Monday night. I should have gone riding last night but was too stuffed. Early to bed I think as the last few midnighters watching rugby recordings got me in the doghouse :shifty: One should never be so tired as to misinterpret what the wife says first thing in the morning. She doesn't like it when I slam the car door hard enough to make Little Aussie cry :neutral:<br />
<br />
All solved with a bunch of roses and a heartfelt apology :happy:

That's good work Nicky.<br />
<br />
How's 'Project New Road Bike' coming along? Christmas is coming so maybe a few hints dropped round the house...<br />
<br />
I would suggest a bit of running too. It'll be painful but the effect on your biking will be dramatic. The main reason I run is to get improvements on the bike, both from increased fitness and less weight. Shovelling 100+ kilos uphill on a bike is no fun, so any loss is going to make a difference. If you added one or two 5k runs a week to your regime, you'd love the impact it would have.

Project Road Bike is on hold pending house renovation (second storey) and the subsequent mortgage increase. I'm working out a way to shoe-horn it into the mortgage though <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':blink:' /><br />
<br />
Yes will be getting into the running, and some touch footy if I can manage it, when the daylight improves. Like to do it down at the oval with footy boots on as I want to play next year :shifty:

Luigi's right. As the name suggests, do a bit of cycling, and ALWAYS go better when I'm doing something else, gym, squash, running(hate it, unless there's a football involved). Bike legs are good for riding, but not much else, and you really lose the lateral movement and take off. But the cycle's good for the poor old knees! And you'll burn more fat with longer rides, don't really need to go fast, but kilometres in the legs are the answer. Good luck.

Yeah its a bit of a shit on my current horse cyclo - a $400 Malvern Star MTB <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':blink:' /> From an exercise point of view its pretty good but can get discouraging.<br />
<br />
As Luigi suggests above, I'm aiming for a decent (not stupid) road bike as a long-term solution and to help clock up those long rides. At this stage the only criteria are full Ultegra fitout, Velocity Deep V wheels and standard frame geometry (compact doesn't seem to make any sense to me). So Trek are looking good from this point of view, though at my weight something a bit stronger a Lemond cylcocross might be the go.

Yep, bugger the compact frame, WOFT. Think about Campag gear - I used to use Ultegra, went ot Campag few yrs ago. The new mid-range Campag stuff is exactly what the top of the range Campag Record stuff was a few years ago, and much cheaper. Seems to stay in tune much better, and similar price to Ultegra. BUT, if you're going for a complete bike, you will often get a good price, so no problem with Ultegra. If you're a big bugger (I esp mean tall) it can be worth thinking about getting properly fitted. I went a bit silly and got a custom frame which I love, but no need to be that extreme. Velocity rims are bullet-proof, got some wheels built with fancy-pants hubs / spokes and Velocity rims, love'em. Don't know so much about Lemond, although a mate rides one, he seems pretty happy.

Yeah I need to double-check my sizing - I'm only just on 6" tall but feel a bit hunched up sometimes. A mate of mine recommends you get the next size up from what they recommend, as he likes to stretch out a bit. He'd know, having ridden the continent west-east (Scott CR-1 I think) AND south-north (Merlin Cyrene). He's the one who recommended the Ultegra gear but then he usually buys the top of range Shimano stuff.<br />
<br />
All this of course depends on me getting budget approval from The Minister For Finance and Entertainment. And she's a tough one <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':blink:' />

Just back from a 25km ride - not as cold as I thought it would be, and must say the new Nike nix are doing the trick as far as the padded nether regions go <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':blink:' /><br />
<br />
Got in around an hour which is acceptable, seeing as how I haven't hopped on the machine for a week. :shifty: Usually when hitting the 25km ride I get a bit headachey but this time was fine. Must be something to do with (once again) a steak n pasta dinner this evening :nta

Got about 8km into the ride today when I noticed it was fucking hard to pedal downhill. Sure enough, the rear wheel was rubbing on the brake caliper something wicked, and thus was buckled. Thinking back, I realised I'd heard a rather loud POING-type sound early into the ride, and that it was a broken spoke. FUCK.<br />
<br />
I hate this cheap piece of shit bike. I'm going to have to start lobbying Mrs TA to allocate funds for a new rig...

Hate that! Just had my rear wheel rebuilt after blowing several spokes at different times, major pain in the arse. Lobby hard! Push the "personal safety" line!

cyclo - I don't think it'll count until I come back without some skin :nta In the meantime I'll just keep adding up the reciepts and letting her know how much my $400 MTB has REALLY cost :happy:<br />

You could get shy shorts - several manufacturers make them and they've got pockets and stuff as well as the padding on the crotch. I think most have removable padding too so you can just wear them like regular shorts. This is one I found on google:<br />

Or you could try: www.ugoguys.co.uk for some MTB-style cyling shorts as well as shirts and other cycling stuff. Pretty good site and great service. I sleep with the owner ... :whistle:<br />

Nick, I've just spent two days at the annual Eurobike show in Germany - staring at thousands of lush rigs - from top end carbon fibre to all-steel fixed wheels. Then of course there were all the MTBs etc. Bloody amazing!<br />

My personal favourites were:<br />

So little cash :shifty: Relatively speaking... That Blackjack is one seriously stripped-down unit! Makes my legs hurt just looking at it... VERY slick site tho.<br />
<br />
Mrs the Aussie and I have had an ahem discussion on the bike situation and she's adamant that the more we keep spending money on luxury items (I had to scoff, this being a necessity), the longer it'll take to sort out our renovations.<br />
<br />
So I'm into work early tomorrow then going to start hassling the bank for a fuckload of cash. Yes a metric fuckload (interest higher on imperial fuckload).

Guys need rewards to keep them motivated. Plus, it's for your own health and wellbeing which, you quite rightly, describe as a necessity.<br />
<br />
It may be sneaky but a high cholesterol test like Mr Mike's or an adverse physical might tip the balance. Alternatively break your current rig a couple of teams at the furthest point of your ride and phone home for a lift - she'll soon get fed up with that.<br />
<br />
Good luck though.<br />
<br />
The Fixie was a beautiful piece of kit - I was quite smitten.

:nta Interesting. I will investigate this after I get it fixed... Better yet, I will go for a ride on a day where we have a pressing social engagement and THEN be forced to walk home and turn up late. When she gets angry, I merely shrug and say "Well what do you expect when I'm riding such an unreliable beast?"

One of my mates who I cycle with, happens to be a medico and does a lot of on call stuff, which usually means shitloads of very annoying phone calls for which he gets paid not a lot. SO, he negotiated with the wife that "on-call" money goes into a slush fund for him to do with as he pleases - usually means buying bike bits! Makes the on-call more tolerable. 10 outta 10 for lateral thinking!<br />
Nick, breaking down far from home only works a few times before the wife runs out of tolerance. Last time I had to bribe her to get me!
