    Although they won't name a proper NZ Schools squad to play an Oceania Championship against Australia, Fiji and Japan, this year, they are going to select a 50 players (boys) squad to play one game.

    Secondary school talent identified for regional camps

    The next generation of New Zealand rugby stars have been identified and selected for the 2020 New Zealand Barbarians Under 18 Regional Development Camps.

    A revitalised schools’ programme sees the expansion to five regional camps across the country, capturing more players than ever before.

    New Zealand Rugby’s (NZR) High Performance Player Development Manager Matt Sexton said the ability to expand development opportunities for more players has been a great outcome.

    “The disruption brought upon by Covid-19 actually gave us the chance to step back and think strategically about how to improve our connection at this age group. We hope these camps will be a positive experience for young players who had their 1st XV season interrupted in 2020.

    “We are incredibly thankful to the support of the New Zealand Barbarians and New Zealand Schools Rugby Union for coming on board to support this programme and to the great work our talent identification network has done in finding this group of young players,” said Sexton.

    Camps will be hosted in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin with 250 players attend across the five regions. Facilitated by NZR, Super Rugby and Provincial Union staff, school boy and girl players from both 15s and sevens programmes have been included and will assemble on September 28.

    “The inclusion of schoolgirl players for the first time is recognition of the continual growth in the women’s game and the impressive talent we have seen across the country,” said Sexton.

    At the conclusion of the week-long camp, 50 boys players will assemble as two squads in Hamilton. Mark Hammett and Tom Coventry will lead the sides as they prepare for a one-off fixture on October 10.

    “Once again it is fantastic to have Super Rugby level coaches leading these teams, their knowledge and experience is invaluable for young players.”

    I wonder where this game will be? They have tended to have camps and play at St Paul's.

    @Bovidae They've also held the camps in Palmy in previous years. Will keep an eye on it.

    I'm still looking for the Blues U18 and Crusaders U18 lists.

    @Stargazer The article you posted says 50 players will assemble in Hamilton so I expect they will play there (Schools vs Barbarians I assume).

    By the way, in the Highlanders squad announcement they say that the Highlanders U18 squad will play a game against Crusaders U18 on Friday, 2 October.

    I wonder whether there will be more inter-regional games ( North Island)?

    @Stargazer Christ’s college and Nelson college weren’t included as they have a quad tournament.
    Christ’s would’ve had Fletcher Anderson, Liam Pratt , Louis Gunn ( son of a ) Nic shearer.
    Not sure about Nelson

    @chchfanatic

    I wonder whether that same quad tournament is also the reason why no player from Wellington College has made the Hurricanes U18s. Not sure whether Wellington College, or the fourth school, Whanganui Collegiate have players that would have received an invitation to attend the Hurricanes Camp, if the quad tournament wasn't held at the same time.

    @Stargazer It could simply be that none of the players from those two schools warrant selection.

    @Stargazer

    Congratulations to Harry Godfrey and Adam Lennox for being identified by the Hurricanes selectors for the 2020 Hurricanes Under 18 Camp. Unfortunately, they had to be withdrawn from the Hurricanes rankings and denied the chance of selection. The 94th Quadrangular Rugby Tournament is on the same week as the Hurricanes Camp in Napier which is the pinnacle of the WCS 1st XV Rugby calendar.
    They were able to access the Hurricanes coaches through the Hurricanes Roadshow in Whanganui.

    So Blues U18 will play Chiefs U18 twice.

    Highlanders U18 will play Crusaders U18 at least once.

    Hurricanes U18?

    Anyone heard/read anything about more matches until that October 10 fixture?

    The Blues and Chiefs have usually selected 2 separate teams so it is likely to be 2 games with different squads.
