Well Im back from vegas and it was a pretty succesful trip got a couple of runs in and kept the situps up unfortunatly the food at the conference was all rich and fattening (steak for lunch I mean seriously) so I have lost my fat buster status as I put 1kg back on and am now back at my starting weight of 103kg. Now that im back in the uk for a while though I will get back to it with 3 hill runs this week plus a shorter one on saturday going to hit the bike in the gym for 30 mins on my off days as well.

Just a couple of pointers for anyone traveling there in the future. Nike Town at cesars palace do a 5 mile run on wednesdays the level is pretty average and you can stop at 3 miles if you want. Ohh and they provide water and healthy snacks afterwards and get this its free so if you find yourself there join in I say. Also Vegas hotels charge for you to use the gym, my hotel wanted 25 dollars a day. I went out for a run by myself instead, there are plenty of other runners and chatting to one I got a good route north of the strip.

Hope you have all been busting well will check your logs when I get a chance.

My best ever 10k time is 52 minutes and im determined to break 50 this year I dont think this course is going to be the one to do it on though as I said previously it involves some massive hills

It was the MGM grand but its still unreasonable why bother putting a gym in if your going to make it so expensive no one will use it??
Well I'm back, been dodging the forum since I was at the World Cup QF. Just needed a break from it all really.

Anyway the big news is I'm back busting again!! I kept my running up and went and did the Brussels half marathon. It went pretty badly as I got a cold a few days before and limped in at 2 hours 20 with badly blistered feet from the heat it was 25 degrees I was not expecting that. So for the next few days I felt like rubbish had set a bad time, and my body was wrecked. Considering I had set my PB for 10k 6 months before (52 minutes cross country) I figured I was capable of doing it in under 2 hours. Apart from being full of the cold the only thing I could put my miserable performance down to was my weight. I had not really monitored it at all while I was training and I had gotten up to 108 kgs. Great for a prop not so good for a half marathon runner. So I decided to do some research on the best way to lose a bit. I dug around on the net and read a few articles and there is a lot of bullshit out there different fad diets and what not exercise plans, but most of the info was highly contradictory so I never knew what to believe. Then I found a website with a free pdf book on it written by the guy who founded the company that invented Auto cad (its a drafting program for those that don't know). Read the book and the guy is kinda like me highly scientific to his approach (quotes nasa studies and thermodynamics laws) and he successfully lost a load himself. To make a long story short I started using the tools he has provided with it (also free) to lose some weight. I started at 107.1 and am now at 97.8. The plan is to keep losing till I hit 90kg (should be around 20th of Feb) then I will stay with that till the end of Feb before dropping into the 80's not sure how much to lose the BMI scale says my ideal is about 75. But I still want to be able to play rugby and am probably to old to learn a new position. So any rough ideas here would be helpful, I am 178cm tall if that helps.

Exercise has taken a bit of a back seat while I work away I am trying to do 30 pressups 30 situps and 30 knee lifts a day. Am playing on Saturdays but that is it at the moment. I will address that issue more when I hit my target I think.

Anyway the webtools provide a cool graph so here is mine for the last couple of months I will be back more regularly now with updates. Great to see some big lads shedding it. Basically the red line is my exponentially smoothed rolling average. Stock brokers use the same technique to eliminate the noise (fluctuation) in a shares price. This plan uses it to give you your weight loss trend.

If anyone is interested I am happy to send them links to the info I am using. Even if you don't like the plan you could use the webtool to monitor your weight, handy if you travel a lot for work like me.

Landmark day have officially busted 10kg it has taken 2 months exactly and I am the lightest I have been since I was 19 years old, 97.1kg!

7.1 kg's to first milestone and re-assessment of target goal weight, looking more and more likely to be in the mid to low 80s though!

Its strange to think 2 months ago I was carrying the equivalent weight of 20 blocks of butter with me wherever I went.

Next stop is 95kg my playing weight at 18, from there its uncharted territory, as thats the first time I weighed myself at my full height.

I have been starting at hooker but had to move to tight head during the last few games when someone got injured, I am still holding my own, at scrum time in both positions. But doubt that will be the case when I get under 90kgs, or against some of the bigger teams in the league. We only have 8 or so league games left this year after getting knocked out of the national vase last weekend. So the question really is where to play next year, I will be 30 then and if I decide to stabilse at 80kg's (which is looking more and more likely) then I don't want to put my body through another 25 games in the engine room. So at the moment I think my options are back row, as I read the game well, but I may be a bit slow since a broken leg a few years back, or half back as I have always had good hands and can comfortably pass both ways, only problems with that would be developing a kicking game and convincing the coach I'm an option there, and the shame of joining the blouses.

    Weekly update,

Well its been tough this week the hotel I have been in has the nearest supermarket over a mile away so I have been plodding down there and back in the rain all week. Last night I decided to hit an exhibition at the museum instead (Busting mind fat as well as body) and by the time I got back I could'nt be arsed going to the supermarket, so ordered a steak for room service but with no sauce and a salad instead of chips I dont think it did too much damage. We shall see next week I suppose. Big game this weekend our local rivals, I have been picked to play hooker again. Weight now at 96.2 kg total busted = 10.9kg

Good weekend of busting stuck to the diet perfectly, no rugby though as the derby area has been hammered by the rain and the pitches are all water logged.

Have less then a month to go now till I should hit 90kg's and will take my break for some re-assessment of my goal weight, will be doing it in France on holiday which helps, plan is to increase calories for duration of holiday then drop it back down again when I get back. I have a work trip to the states coming up in may and the goal is to replace a lot of my clothes when there as its cheap and I am currently shrinking out of nearly everything I own. So by the start of May I need to get to my final target weight.

Hard to say, I dont really have a measure for it. I have not really felt any ill effects with my fitness since I started the diet, but I dont hit the gym so I just base that on rugby and running. I was fit enough to do a half marathon and could happily run 10k in under an hour. So probably not completly out of condition but I am a determined bugger and would not stop even when I had blisters tearing open under my feet. The plan will be to get to 80kg then maybe build a bit of muscle on again then diet again to trim the body fat. I have read an article in a physiology journal that was basically saying losing weight and building muscle at the same time are difficult to do as your body only really does one mode at a time.

Would be interested to hear how others have done with this.

Was not often noted as being a fat bastard had a gut and big thighs so that probably hid it a lot.
Weight still dropping in a nice pattern down to 93.9kg's now on track to make my first goal 90 by the 20th of Feb.

Really pushed myself this weekend in the game to see how the fitness was looking, after Barts comments, feel a little faster then I used to be, not sure about strength need a better way to test that. Came through the game fine, spent a lot more time in the loose making tackles (As a hooker should I guess). So thus far fitness not suffering from diet, strength undecided!
Week ended at 93.5kg average weight and weighed 91.2 this morning. Playing in a social match this weekend for a mates birthday so that should keep the fitness ticking over. Last month I lost 6kg, a bit much to be honest but I had a stomach bug for a few days so putting it down to that.

Weekly update has me weighing in at an avg of 91.9 KG this week. My daily weights have all been around 90.8-90.6 so doesn't feel like I have lost much but the average is still coming down. Packing the gym gear next week to kick start a bit of light weights, want to get a bit of tone in the old abs and chest so any suggestions welcome. I will probably hit the pool as well for a bit of a paddle.

Spent last weekend in Edinburgh caught up with mates who have not seen me since I started busting, most of them couldn't get past how much I have lost and they all asked if I was still playing in the front row. I waved it off as the misses not looking after me (which she didn't like). Was too embarrassed to tell the boys I was on a diet, don't know why! Just not a manly thing to do in my head I guess! Felt a bit of a dick afterwards should have just said yeah I'm on a diet. Think it must be a bit of kiwi tall poppy syndrome, don't want to stand out.

Pretty busy weekend had a big 84-0 win over the bottom of the league team, they were not up to much but it was good to convert nearly every chance we got. Challenging for promotion now so the coach is chuffed.

Here is my chart for the last quarter doing well with consistent loses am now at an avg weight of 91.4 and weighed in at 90.1 for the last 3 days I seem poised to break into the 80s any day now.
