didn't manage a run in the weekend but helped fundraise for the ruggers team by being a marshall at the NZ Triathlon - great inspiration to get out for a run.... that had evaporated by the time I'd spent 6+ hours standing up and waving cyclists etc through!!

run on for this evening tho!

5km @ 26.07min about 8 sec slower than previous run which was my fastest so far. Definitely easier to pick up the pace now as not so worried about coughing up a lung.

Aiming to get around 5min per Km. The course I run is pretty much cross-country though (gravel/dirt roads and plently of hills) so main concern is not blowing an ankle etc on a bloody rock when trying to go too fast.

5km @ 26.59 - Slower time than the last couple of runs but didn't really push too hard this run - had one of those meh days and felt good afterwards that I at least got out there.

Had the Dead Antz AGM so that was a good incentive to up the ante with my running. Looking to be doing 5km nearly every second day until the season starts.

'Coach' wanted us to be able to do 4km in 22-23min so I'm pretty stoked that I'm already at the level. Now I'm really keen to get down to 5min Km's!

Other news was that our team has been bumped up a div (within reserve grade) so we'll be playing a higher quality opposition this season! Doh!
First pre-season game confirmed for 29th March - 4*20min quarters of pain! looking forward to it!

Two decent workouts over easter - and managed to stay away from most of the chocolate I ran into.

21st 5Km @ 26.10
23rd 5Km @ 25.50

Stoked with the most recent run - closest I've got to the 5min/Km mark and my fitness is definitely starting to come on - still have some weight to drop (3-5kg) but my legs feel really strong and a couple of weeks work in the gym (at some point!) and I'll be primed I reckon.

Have to say most of the fields I've seen around wellies at the moment look rock hard - pre-season is gonna be real fun!

Primo! run on thursday and clocked 24.55 over the 5km. Totally stoked to have broken the 5min/Km barrier!

pretty well timed with ruggers starting this coming weekend! Have really noticed an improvement in fitness in the last couple of weeks - able to keep a good pace going throughout.

Now that rugby is about to kick off I won't be running quite at much, maybe 2 times a week, to maintain fitness and build on any match fitness I pick up.

5km @ 25.10 - a bit slower than last time but still pushing close to around 5min a Km. A lot of rain made the track pretty muddy so as winter gets closer I'm going to have to find a similar length road run.

First game this weekend against Poneke H-Islanders - should be fun in the front row!! hmmm perhaps I should have been a bit better at hitting the weights!

phew - rough weekend! finished my last run prior to our first game on a high - knocked another 8-9sec off my time over 5km (24.44) so very pleased with that.

Dead Antz first match. As noted the coach had a chance to bump us up a grade and thought it would be good for our game.... hmmm :nta

Played a poneke team full of ex-prems (team got started up again this year as its Poneke's centennial year I think?) and some big guys. Driving rain and we were light on front rowers. Plenty of new Antz so initial drills were focused on learning each others names!! ah the joys of reserve grade ruggers.

Started first half on the wing and played the second half at loosehead prop (I'm pure utility I tell ya). Happy with my run on the wing - cleaned up a bit of ball - took a couple of bombs and made a bit of ground on kick returns - def solid and no errors even in the wet.

Our front row was propably outweighed by 80-100kg I reckon. I'd have been our heaviest at 100kg with the other lads around 80-85kg! and the oppo would have started around 115-120kg and upwards! Second half was no fun at all - both teams tiring and plenty of scrums. Only consulation was that my fitness was good - hoping 2-3 weeks and my match- fitness will be cranking along.

It'll be interesting to see how the season pans out - still a few players to join the team and we'll all be better for a run. Shit that rainstorm made summer a distant memory!!

Now that the season has started I'm aiming for runs on tues/thurs to maintain fitness and hopefully continue to build up more speed.

dang first game under my belt and already a setback. Aches and pains went around tuesday but still bothered by a rib... hasn't settled down at all and twinges a bit while I'm walking so not hopeful about how it'll go when I'm running or playing.

Gutted - really made an effort to get fit this year and having been out with a rib injury a couple of years ago I know what a bitch they can be.

I was really hoping to get through this season without any sort of serious injury too - last couple of seasons have both been cut short by rib and ankle injuries...

stink aw (must be getting old!)

You're doing really well, when I was running everyday I got down to 25 minutes and was really stoked, I stopped for about six months and I'm slowly getting my times back down.I'm at 32 minutes now which is pretty pathetic to be honest , be stoked when I'm back at 25 again.

    cheers aw!

Have only been for a couple of runs in the last 3 weeks due to busted rib - last run actually felt ok, no pain from the rib and although I took it reasonably easy I was only 1min 30 odd seconds off my target time of 25min... intending to increase the workload now that I know the rib is on the mend.

Unless I start running on the road or a rugby field I don't know how much faster I'll get - the existing run is on a dirt/gravel road and there is a risk of doing an ankle if you're not careful.

On the odd occasion I've been tempted to repeat the circuit and see how well I go over 10km... one day!

Yeah I'm not sure how good running on the footpath is going to be for my knees and hips in the long run but like yousaid twisting an ankle is a possibilty on gravel.

10km is an awesome target, what kind of running shoes do you have?I'm looking for a new pair.

realised I'd totally forgotten about this thread. Now its actually a in-season thread tho.

Rib has healed ok - had 3 games back but work and life in general has been busy (plus friggin winter!) so running has become sporadic.

Got out for a 5km run the other week and was pleasantly surprised to get through in 27min or so - 2min or so off my best time but far better than I was expecting. Had tight legs for a couple of days but will get out again on friday and push a bit harder.

Friends are committing themselves to the NY marathon in 2009 - no way I think I'm ready for the bigun but have been thinking hard about trying 10km and then seeing how far away I might be from a half marathon.

Jegga - sorry bout the late, late, late reply! I went down to shoe clinic (wellington) and go a pair of mizunos (sp?) they are the lightest pair of running shoes I've ever tried. They are sweet bro and around the low 200 mark. Would def recommend them and I've had all sorts of problems finding good running shoes as I have pretty broad feet.

will aim to post next run and get back into it
