To take into consideration the recovery period needed by a 40-year old tighthead prop, I have dropped gym sessions from six to three a week and focussed more on cardio which, at this stage, is road running and/or treadmill running.

Training regimes is now as follows:

Monday - Legs, Light Cardio
Tuesday - Arms, Chest and Shoulders, Light Cardio
Wednesday - Chest and Back, Light Cardio
Thurs - Heavy Cardio
Friday - Rest
Saturday - Match
Sunday - Coaching Under Eights (Involves quite a bit of light excercise and is the ideal lactic acid shake-out from Saturday's match)

Will see how this works out.

Match in Saturday is full 80 for Teddington 2nds v Twickenham RFC 2nds at Twickenham (club, not stadium). Should be a good step up from last week, but hopefully not as hot.

We played Twickenham RFC last weekend in the league. Stuffed them 39 - 12 (explained by fact that i wasn't playing!), not entirely sure how they are in our league which is London NW.

As it turns out, I can't play the Twickenham game as the KO is at 1:30 and my son has a late morning football match in Bracknell, so will be turning out for Bracknell Vets in their annual local derby grudge match v Reading Vets (last year's game was an all in brawl).

Not really my kind of game being a tree-hugging pacifist and all...
I am 39 turning 40 and, having spent ten years doing virtually no excercise (odd game of cricket or golf aside), smoking 20-40 a day and overeating and drinking, decided that enough was enough. I quit smoking in 2005 (cold turley, haven't touched one since), hit the gym in 2006 and started playing again in late 2007.

I am still overweight and underfit, but I am very pleased that I took the plunge and am playing again as there is nothing quite like getting out there on a Saturday afternoon and playing a game of rugby with a good bunch of blokes and would recommend that anyone thinking that they would like one more hit out before they grow too old for it, just get out there and do it.

Like me, you'll probably regret it on several occasions, but at least you won't die wondering!

My son is seven years old and is a rugby nutter. I cannot explain how proud he is that he plays in the same jersey on a Sunday morning at minis that he sees his dad play in on a Saturday afternoon (figuratively speaking of course, he could use my 3XL as a duvet...). Its worth all the sweat, bumps and bruises ten times over.

Had a fantastic 80 minutes agianst the big bad Reading Vets.

We got beaten 40-7 but it was much, much closer than that. The collisions at the breakdown were epic and despite us losing our loosehead to injury and having to go to uncontested scrums before halftime, I felt like I had been dragged backwards through a hedge on Sunday morning.

Was v. chuffed about going the full 80 and not having to burn energy in the scrum meant I could play like a loose forward and hit a lot more rucks than I would usually do in a game and absolutely loved it.

Flankers have the most fun...

Have gymmed Monday (shoulders, arms and neck) and Tuesday night (chest and back) and will do legs on Wed, practice on Thurs (my first official rugby practice in over ten years, how exciting), rest Friday, Guildford away on Saturday.

Smashed a heavy leg session tonight.

Leg extensions 10 x 5
Leg curls 10 x 5
Calf raises 10 x 5
Leg Press 10 x 6
Squats 10 x 4

Stalled my truck twice getting out the parking lot of the gym because I couldn't control the shaking of my leg on the clutch...hope I recover in time for rucks, mauls, scrums and lineouts practice tomorrow.

Had the most awesome experience on Saturday, a game in the backrow!

Surprisingly I was fit enough to get around the park a lot more than I thought I would but the experience of being more free to get to rucks and carry the ball up was one I will treasure for a while...

One thing that did strike me was how many more bumps, bruises and general collateral damage your body seems to attract as a loose forward that is often not the case in the front row where the player collosions seems to be very different in nature.

In the meantime, back to reality, and that means shoulders, neck and arms in the gym tomorrow...

Had a cracking game this weekend against a powerful Marlow side. Had a large, experienced loosehead to deal with and was very happy with the result. The extra power I am putting down plus the fitness effects of having logged three consecutive weeks of 'full eighties' are coming together well.

Slough away next Saturday. Should be another cracker.

This week:

Mon - Arms and Shoulders
Tues - Legs
Wed - Back
Thurs - Training
Fri - Rest
Sat - Slough away

One thing that did strike me was how many more bumps, bruises and general collateral damage your body seems to attract as a loose forward that is often not the case in the front row where the player collosions seems to be very different in nature.
In the meantime, back to reality, and that means shoulders, neck and arms in the gym tomorrow...
I played a season at number eight for the Ngatea Black Dogs in 2002 after begining the year at tighthead. I couldnt believe how much quick I was around the field. At number eight my legs never felt like jelly/lead as they do from scrummaging in the front row. And people were suddenly telling me how fit I was. The truth was I wasnt any fitter at all, but they didnt appreciate how much life at tighthead saps your energy.

Precisely why I'm doing it next year, that and wanting my son to see me play. He is three months old at the moment so I'll need a few seasons for him to remember, yikes !!
Isnt it awesome? My son is also seven and loves standing on the sideline watching me play. I played twice this year and he thought it was great, also took him on the bus to Coromandel with us. I actually think he got more of a kick out of it than I did, and I really enjoyed it also! My goal is to play in the same team as him oneday. tTat would mean I will stil need to be able to play in 9 years time, when Im 43 and he will be 16.

Shite dont know why I missed this one. xzxidiot2 Its great to see you okes still trying to play with your boys. xzxgood Myself way way to old to even take a road run and on the dog walk stage. Have to do the backyard touchie a bit but then I have a 21 year old that can keep the 10 year old busy and myself the ref and advisor from the kitchen. Time you lot get the timing right then for the second boy, so the older one can do the coaching. xzxgood

Anyway good luck and keep us up to date!

My mates father - Prop Cyril, and my 'second dad' managed to play a 3rd grade game of rugby with his '3' sons. Graeme at centre, Cyril at prop, and myself locking the scrum with the old bugger. I had a bye from my real team game, so shot off to Mercury Bay with the Whanga 3rd grade boys, and played a game. Little knowing my coach would be there watching!! Got a light bollocking after the game!! Bt was cool to play beside the old bugger, who had coached us from about 14-19 years of age.
