@Tim depends where they want to start Delany who was awarded the most improved for the Canes this year. Delany at 5 and Plumtree at 6 wouldn't be the worst. They aren't the tallest but they are both taller than Blackwell.

    @Stargazer said in Wellington 2022:

@Canes4life Pek Cowan is playing club rugby in Wellington, so may be in the squad again. Fidow may still be available. Other possible props are Hurricanes U20 props Bradley Crichton and Siale Lauaki.

Didn't Pek Cowan play in that Classic All Black's game against Spain the other day? Surely he's passed it.

I also noted that Iona Apineru (former NZ Under 20s loose forward) has shifted to prop for Petone in the hope of cracking in that position.

@Canes4life If you have little depth, beggars can't be choosers. I think depth in some positions is lacking in NZ as a whole, btw.

Sakalia is running about though probably past it also Whetu Henry but not very promising. Maybe we need to poach some more Hawkes Bay front rows 😂.

@mikey07 Haha, the funny thing is that we have one of your discards, who couldn't get game time for Wellington, and now he's a regular starter for us, plays Super Rugby for MP and has been named in the Tonga squad. Wouldn't have happened if he had stayed in Wellington. Not sure who were the starting props in Wellington at the time.

@Stargazer wasn’t it Goodes and Toomaga-Allen? Can’t remember who else we had at the time.

@Canes4life Yes, and Chris Bauman (in 2016), Vince Sakaria, Tolu Fahamokioa (2017) and obviously Alex Fidow.

It was announced on the Monday wrap on ClubRugby.co.nz that James Blackwell will be having a sabbatical from the NPC this year.

The Wellington Lions have also signed Sione Halalilo who has come through the system as a 6/8.

Looked good for Hurricanes U20s in their game against the Blues (still planning to re-watch the other games).

@Stargazer will have to watch it aswell, I haven't seen much of Sione Halalilo to make much comment but to me he may be a little young to command a starting spot for the Lions this year.

I really hope they give some of the players out of club rugby ago the ones that haven’t been in the lions set up before. There’s a couple of the club rugby website for leading try scorer etc that would be a better go then the likes of Laursen.

But how can he “excel” at his ceiling if he isn’t there.

No surprises on these two signings but I am surprised Higgins has only committed for 1 year.

@Stargazer a quick assesment of the squad:

    Hookers: solid
    Props: very average
    Locks: very average
    Loose forwards: good, but young
    Halfbacks: solid
First fives: if you include Ruben Love - solid
    Midfield: solid
Outsides: solid - very surprised to see Nehe Milner Skudder on that list

My starting side from that squad would be:

    1. Xavier Numia
    2. Asafo Aumua
    3. PJ Sheck
    4. James Blackwell
    5. Caleb Delany
    6. Taine Plumtree
    7. Du Plessis Kirifi
    8. Peter Lakai
    9. TJ Perenara
    10. Aiden Morgan
    11. Connor Garden-Bachop
    12. Peter Umaga-Jensen
    13. Billy Proctor
    14. Julian Savea
    15. Ruben Love.

wgtnrugby 17 years after his professional career began - Wellington born, former Wallaby Pekahou Cowan has retired from rugby.

A chance meeting lead to him suiting up for the Lions in 2021/22 and he leaves with the Ranfurly Shield and @bunningsnpc trophy in 2022.

Thanks for the memories Pek, one of the great men.
