Tis a bit odd no announcement re: Barrett yet but I'm sure he'll be locked up. Hopefully for a few years it would be a bit of a shame if it was a 1 year deal again.

Hopefully we give Lakai a 5 year Proctor contract. Shit - make it 10 years.

    Stuff

Aside from Ardie, he's our most important player so it's good to sign him for the next three seasons. It will be interesting to see if the Canes continue his run in the 12 jersey...

    @Machpants

excellent news. It's what I've been waiting for. Now we just need Lakai and I will be very happy with the team. We would need another VG lock and wing but it's getting there

@Winger yeah if we can sign Lakai, another solid lock and a couple good wingers then the squad will be an upgrade from last year.

New coach too. Or some assistants with nous who do the hard coaching yards, seems to be working for ABs!

I wonder if Tito is a chance in the coming years to join Canes coaching ranks. Seems to be doing well with the Lions pack.

Lakai is a must sign. I'm keen to see what wingers we'll pick up. If AJ Lam is available I'd be very happy with him.

Another option is to move Sullivan onto the wing, I reckon he would go well.

@Canes4life yup Sullivan should be on the park, but I think I'd go with JB or PUJ at 12 & Sullivan at 13 as my midfield.

@foobaNZ I really want to see this backline get a run next year: 9. Roigard 10. Morgan 11. Rayasi 12. Barrett 13. Umaga-Jensen 14. Sullivan 15. Moorby. It's got a good mix of size, pace and x-factor that will trouble alot of defences.

I would have Perenara, Love and one of Higgins/Patafilo/Proctor/Savea coming off the bench.

Lots of good options. I'd be more than happy with that back line.

Which NPC wingers are unsigned for 2023 so far we could snatch up?

I watched Roigard closely in the Wellington CM. He was a bit ordinary so hope he is usually much better. Perenara is up and down now but if could always play like the HB match

The backline we will likely get includes Perenara Proctor and Savea (replaying Sullivan). Proctor is starting to play a lot better this NPC so hope he can carry it through to super rugby. This will be a good enough backline. But sign Lakai and the team will be able to put out a class backrow starting with Savea(8) and Lakai (7). Locks will still be a bit lacking still. Thats our biggest weakness. But front row should be a lot better. Aumua is hitting excellent form. Out props will all be a year older and ready to take on any team. Esp if Lomax maintain his recent AB form

It won't be a super rugby winning team (that will be the Crusaders) but they should be able to compete with the best of the rest. And test the Crusaders when luck is on their side

Roigard was very good against Canterbury a couple weeks ago. A few lovely runs and touches in these highlights.

I thought Roigard was good against Wellington. I'd have him starting but they'll definitely pick Perenara.

I agree that they'll almost certainly have Proctor at 13. Sullivan would be my choice there though.

To be fair on Proctor he's probably the best defending 13 out of the lot and that's really helping Wellington this year.

@Canes4life yea Proctor now is much improved from a few years ago.

My biggest issue with him was how often our attack would die when he'd be involved. Either bad passes, not passing or making a mistake. He was a ouyng nervy player but seems to have grown out of it.

Agreed, he looks stronger this year when he carries and the Lions attack has been functioning well around him. He’s more of a Conrad Smith type player where he will never bash through the line, instead has to use his guile to get through.

Big call to say he's like Conrad. Whenever I've watched he's just tried to truck it up and lost out big time

I’m not saying he’s as good as Conrad, but he has to approach the game the same way because he’s not going to bust the line with power. Proctor is a good defender but needs to work on his offensive game if he wants to progress his career any further. He’s still fairly young at 23 so he should start to come in to his own physically over the next few years and I feel like we’re starting to see that this year with the Lions. I remember it took Matt Proctor a while to mature and once he did he was one of the best centres in NZ, critical in that 2016 title winning team.
