Assuming this is the right Joshua Smith ...

    spcrugby PLAYER TO WATCH

With a combination of Fijian and Tongan genes there’s no surprise Joshua Smith is a big lad. Until this year he has always played at tighthead prop. However, 18 months ago he knew he needed to make some big changes. He wanted to crack the 1st XV but knew he had to get fitter. So over that time he’s thrown himself into running, gym work and boxing. He now stands as the fittest tight forward in the 1st XV at 6’2” and a lean 110kgs. A 70 minute player now pulling on the number 5 jersey with a huge workrate and one of the first names on the team sheet. He’s played in every 1st XV match this year and currently leads the MVP points tally. It’s safe to say this intelligent young man has knocked his goals out of the park.

Undoubtedly you’ll be seeing hard running and tough defense from him this Saturday but keep an eye on the subtle handing too. Well played Josh.

Didn't know where else to post this. Still gutted we lost her to the dark side.

legendofmartybanks Hawkes Bay FPC player Amelia Pasikala has headed over to Australia to play league for the Bulldogs U19 team.

Might have to watch her games every week 🔥💪

Shout out to Shannon Nightingale for putting me onto yesterday’s game

Is any of you familiar with the location of the HBRU Training Centre and knows whether it has been damaged?

Also, our Academy team is supposed to play Wellington Academy on Saturday (in Palmerston North), but I somehow can't see that go ahead. Many players are probably busy helping in the clean-up and may not have been able to train. There are more important things than playing a game, at the moment.

Hawke's Bay Academy squad to take on Manawatū Academy on Sat 25 Feb 2023 (at SRI, Palmerston North):

Good squad on paper and in normal times they should be able to beat Manawatū, but how have the events of the last 2 weeks affected them? How many times have they been able to train?

I hope the people at Club Rugby will cover this game, so we can get some highlights.

Looking at those photos, I'm not sure Cooper Flanders played. Definitely not in the 6, 7 or 8 jersey.

@Stargazer how tall is Tom Allen? Hopefully the Canes have him in his sights, he looks like a 2m lock from those photos but the other players could be really small.

@Canes4life I don't know his height, but he is quite tall. On the photo below, he's in the 5 jersey, in-between Bethel Malasia (13) and his brother Reuben (19). Bethel is a big back; Reuben is also a lock.

Tui halfback Kahlia Awa played for Petone Rugby, today.

I hope that doesn't mean Wellington have poached her, too. That would mean we've lost our first and second Tui halfback, with Jensen retiring.

@Stargazer Two obvious props there but the rest of them look like they restrict their play to somewhere in the backline, must be a ten aside team.

The Farah Palmer Cup draw has been released.

The Tui will play in the Premiership in 2023, so I expect them to be absolutely trashed in most games. I'll be happy to be wrong though! Their round robin games are below. I haven't included the finals.

Day Date Time Home Away Venue
Sat 15 July 2023 12.05pm Hawke's Bay Auckland Regional Sports Park Hastings
    Sat 22 July 2023 Bye

Sun 6 August 2023 12.05pm Wellington Hawke's Bay TBC TBC
Sat 12 August 2023 2.05pm Hawke's Bay Canterbury Regional Sports Park Hastings

@Higgins Not holding my breath that the HBRU will post one. They didn't for the first game.

As written in this article, it will be a mix of mainly Academy players and other club rugby players. There are very few Magpies that are not playing SR or MLR.

The Tui have a new head coach: last year's assistant coach Sione Cherrington-Kite. He coached Hastings R&S when they won the Maddison Trophy in 2020.

13 changes to HB team for 2nd half.
Manawatu look like they’ve changed just about their entire team as well.
First half Tim Farrell went off injured after 5 minutes and Kienan Higgins after 10.
