Is it a real power clean if your feet never leave the floor ( when doing bigger weights mine never do )

Despite this I'm sure I'm developing more of a "spring in my step" as it were. Bloody good fun exercise and reasonably safe to bail out of if you ever fuck them up.

I would say it is a real bad power clean if your feet do leave the floor!! Sure you are up onto 'tip toes' through the explosive phase, but if your feet leave the floor, you are opening yourself up to a world of potential pain and injury. If you leave the floor something is wrong. In my opinion anyway!!

I don't see any Olympic weight lifters jumping!! And then having that weight coming back down on you - perfect for a spine compression injury.

I agree with Bart--it's OK to extend to your toes on the lift, but if your feet leave the ground completely, your are begging for a spinal injury. And that's not something I'd wish on anybody.

Cheers men, sounds like I am doing it right after all then !

I think a good judge on whether the form is good is the pain level the day after. Just a bit of a "good" ache if I recall so thats a good sign. Nothing crippling !

yeah muscle sore is good, spinal sore is not!! Prop Cyril has got a hairline fracture on one of those little wing things on his vertebrae from squatting. The floor used to flex under us - and once he had exploded up, with the flex of the floor and the spring in the bar, the compression in the spine caused the injury - which pains him to this day.

Did some power cleans last night for the first time in ages (have been a bit "addicted" to BB thrusters lately). The one rep I did when my feet left the ground felt completely wrong.

Other than developing grip strength, the biggest challenge for is to resist the temptation of trying to lift the bar all the way up to the chest/shoulder region. Once I got into a rythym of pulling the bar up (to the "scarecrow" position) and just reacting quickly to get under it and then drive up, it was awesome.

You should definitely jump or at least attempt to jump on your power clean.

The video you posted ACT is pretty good but while they dont actually say so, it kind of implies that the bar is pulled to the scarecrow position with the arms. There shouldnt be any pulling with the arms in the clean.

Must be our new years resolutions cos I ripped out a few cleans in the garage last night as well ! Did a rep of 102.5kg which I'm pretty fucken pleased with cos I haven't done them in ages ( literally months ) but I feel it might be the deadlift training having some sort of "spillover effect" cos I've never quite managed that much before. I probably do lift with the arms too much when doing them so may video myself next time to check form which I'm sure is horrible to look at. Red Beard tells me Owen Franks can do 140-150kg so a wee way to go yet !

Bastard! I did exactly the same yesterday, and set myself a new record at 95kg. I thought surely i would have the biggest clean on the fern!

I'm off for a deadlift session shortly so that should be a good warm up for a run at 100kg maybe, i felt like i could do a little more last night.

Judging from some of the squats, benches etc I've seen here over the years I'd assume a couple have us licked dude ! If it's any consolation the 102.5 felt a bit shaky and wobbly and like I said the form may be a bit iffy to say the least. Perhaps it is a bit of a mental thing because the more you deadlift the lighter the bar feels as you do that initial pull. Perhaps the rest ( about 3 or 4 months since I last did em ) did me a world of good, great discipline from me because as I have my weights set up in the garage it's often tempting to do some kind of lift when I'm out playing darts or dumping more crap in there !

Tongue in cheek about having the biggest clean but i didnt expect to have my thunder stolen quite so quickly!

And while i was crying about you beating me i forgot to mention great job on the 102.5! I lifted that for my first warm up set at deadlift this morning and it took the wind out of my sails to try a new record clean. Theres no way i was gonna get that weight to my shoulders!

Thanks dude, it's an awesome feeling having that much weight up there, mind you it'd be a completely different feeling if I were to fuck out and drop it somewhere painful haha !

Have been lifting tin in the Castres Olympique rugby club gym in France and one of their fitness trainers has been teaching me the snatch. Great movement, quite technical to learn. Both feet leave the ground! Also he tried to teach me Jerk but its no good for my neck..... quite sore around C5-7 12 hours later.

lol. so it must just be when you are lifting the insane weights that you don't manage the leap - like the olympics etc, which is pretty much the only place we plebs get to watch the sport!

In the snatch, clean and jerk the trainer (in broken English) has really stressed the point of leaving the ground and shrugging as high as poss on the ascent and stamping on the floor in quater squat position upon landing.
