@daffy-jaffy I expected more new players, too. I'm disappointed they've again selected players like Collier and Stanaway. Change takes time, I guess.

The playmaker? Good question, maybe the only newbie? Waaka isn't there, either.

But I expect instant wonder results, we do have a foreign outside super coach remember.

The All Blacks 7s Development team have lost their first game of the Silicon Valley Sevens to Chile 0-7. Didn't see the game, but there's an article about the loss on stuff (see below). Apparently, Mason Emerson is in the squad and came close to scoring for NZ; not sure which player has dropped out.

It looks like Chile's win over the NZ 7s Dev team is not coincidence. They're also smashing the Tongan team at the moment. Great to see a team from outside the core nations doing well, even if it's a tourney without the strongest senior teams.

I agree with your sentiments but surely the NZ B team should be expected to roll a rugby powerhouse like Chile but about thirty or forty. Can you remind us who comprised the appointment panel that decided who would take over from Sir Gordon Teitjens, questions must be asked. Hell I'd even back Mr. C. Philpott to get a better result against Chile than that.

NZ7s Dev team lose 12 - 24 to the USA. So many work-ons, but let's start with tackling.
To their defence, a lot of the NZ players have only come out of Mitre 10 Cup a few weeks ago, so haven't had much time together as a team and haven't trained much 7s.

It's 14-0 to NZ at half time in their last pool game against Tonga.
Two converted breakaway tries (Rayasi & Tiatia) made the difference.
Hopefully, they can now play well during the 2nd half, too.

Try to Emerson, immediately after kick-off for the 2nd half. Not converted. 19-0

After another (unconverted) try to Rayasi, Emerson scores his second. The kicker can't kick. 29-0 NZ

After a good break from Houston, Hyland scores just before the hooter goes. Full time: 34-0 to NZ.

Commentator refers to NZ and Tonga as the "South Sea Islands". 😀

Thanks to New Zealand's positive points differential, they are still going through to the Cup Quarter Finals, despite two losses. A bit weird, but hopefully they'll play better tomorrow.

The AB7s Development team will play the Aussies in the Cup QF of the Silicon Valley Sevens at 9:04am.
Not much hope of winning if they play like they did yesterday, esp. with the Aussies finishing first.

    Livestream:

NZ destroyed by Australia. Not sure whether this is a full strenght Aussie team, but losing 40 - 7 is embarrassing.

After another loss to Fiji (15-26), the AB7s Dev team went on to beat Japan 26 - 5 to finish 7th overall. Yuck!

37 seconds into the first game, and Portia Woodman has already scored her first try of the tournament.

Poor Tahiti, being hammered by our Kiwi women. Ruthless. 21-0 after 3 and half minutes.

Half time: 42-0 to the Black Ferns 7s.

It's great that so many Pacific nations participate in this tournament, including teams that are far from the level of the World Series' core nations. They get the chance to play against the best and no doubt will learn from it. But for NZ, Australia and also Fiji, these games are just opposed training runs.
