@barbarian I guess I prefer dealing with that at the judiciary ... if they get found to have done that then they get long bans.

I think I still prefer that they can be replaced because it’s one psycho rather the whole team. Let’s say that Barrett was deliberately trying to maim Hooper with his shoulder charge. Is that really less than an eye gouge? What if a player gets done for an eye gouge and then on review they discover it was an accident but he’d been sent off 1 minute into a game?

Not saying I’m right, just scenarios that make me prefer that the player can be replaced.

I’ve always been in the camp that a red card is a red to the player and out of the game, but a yellow to the team and they get a replacement after 10 minutes.

Other stake holders I guess. 80,000 fans that paid a lot of money to see a contest that has been removed by a first minute red card. Send the player off but allow some one else on, and then ban / fine / whatever the player.

@Kirwan Don't forget that a system doesn't have to perfect to be better.

You’re either in IT or politics with talk like that.

FWIW I do like the 20 minute red card idea and the player sits out for remainder of game with team returning to 15 players.

It makes sense in my head so much I can’t see why anyone would have an issue with it.

I'd add in a clause that prohibits replacing a red-carded player in the instances of deliberate, malicious foul play. The referee would have to see clear intent to injure to invoke this clause.

So Barrett gets to be replaced, because his actions weren't deliberate/maliciously targeting Hooper's head. Same goes for the high tackle that just slipped up a bit, or the challenge in the air that goes horribly wrong. But the eye-gouge or the punch to the head results in a straight red with no sub, because fuck those guys right off.

This is where the league system is better and things are placed on report and a YC is only a very last resort.

This reduces the endless number of replays and time wasting that has been killing union for years now.

    @Tim yes, but we don't want to get to complex. There seems room for an a system lik this;

White: On report to be looked at by the judicary, no on field sanction other than a penalty.

    Yellow: As it is now

Red: 20mins, and the the player can't come back but you can use a sub to get back to 15

Black: Off for the whole game, for violent acts.

    Largely in agreement with Kirwan.
Not sure about the white card - doesn't this happen automatically already?
And I get why you want the Black card - but my concern is that if we introduce yet another sanction subject to interpretation, we may end up with more controversy. Reckon your call on the Red card will deal sufficiently with this.

A 20 minute penalty to the team, and a game-long sanction for the player committing the act just feels right.

It doesn't deal with the red card offence committed in the last 10 minutes vs. one committed in the first 60 - but it is better than what we have now.

Go back to the good old days of red cards being reserved for foul play and second yellow cards in a game.
