Just like clockwork, the season is coming up, and the NRL has its first scandal...

      Wait, sorry, force of habit

The AFL has a good size story today. Looks like prior to last season, The Demons had a wee bit of a crisis on their hands. It seems Simon Goodwin was in a bit of shit for the standard of his behaviour, including a decent smattering of work place bullying. It appears to have been so serious the head of the AFL got involved.

It obviously quietly went away, Goodwin went on to win a flag in fairly dominant circumstances. Fuck knows why it has come out now, one assumes because the AFL has not been in the media all summer and they desperately needed something?

Coaches need to be bullies sometimes. Punting and drinking are awesome. Goodwin won a flag. No story.

(also Goodwin definitely fits me "head coaches who sucked until they changed everything" metric from the AB thread)

Sorry, he did what? Who cares? I'm still digesting the insight shown on the forum all last season which had the Dees at best the fourth most likely to win the flag.

Given their history they were fucking lucky to be ranked that high

My second favourite Crow behind Rosciutto. Kind of Rosciutto-lite.

            So what's he done?

I think you had the Lions ahead of them. And the Tasmanian expansion proposal.

given their history i would probably have had the Port Douglas Crocs higher as well

                    Totally.

                    18 grand finals including wins in 1900, 1926, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1948, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959, 1960, 1964 and 2021 paints a very, very ordinary picture.

                      @shark okay, simple

If we revert to Black & White TV, then the Demons will be a dynasty. Or if a World War breaks out

Simple. Otherwise the odds of a spoon are much much higher

@mariner4life if we're having a serious discussion about whether they should have been dismissed so readily last season - ultimately proving the doubters utterly wrong - I'm sure you can admit you were among many who were drastically off the mark. The Dees were top of the table pretty much all season, regularly punctuated their season with statement wins, and played the best football in the comp.

OR, you can carry on about The Flag Drought and a few poor years in the 2000's as justification for such a poor read.

                          lol

but seriously, i do that ladder every year. And i am always waaaaay off. I'll do it this year too. And again, i'll be waaay off

And you can unbunch your panties like a lot. Melbourne made a prelim in what, 2019? And got massacred. They failed to make finals in 2020. Not making them flag favs in 2021 is hardly a massive call. And it was a call echoed by most.

Were they the best team all year? yes. Was that expected in Feb? no, absolutely not. In fact many kept waiting for the wheels to fall off. No difference to when Richmond were suddenly good.

@mariner4life They're your wife's by the way and you're missing the point, by heaps. The supremacy you've just admitted to now is exactly what you couldn't either recognise or admit to last season. The Dees were well and truly the best side all year yet you had them at best fourth most likely to win the flag. The fact they made a prelim final a year or two prior only strengthens the case for them being recognised as a flag favourite last year, after a good start. But startlingly it was only a couple of rounds out from the finals I reckon when you had them behind the Dogs, Cats and Lions, maybe others, can't recall.

I have a correction to make. I don't think it was Mariner talking the Dees down all year, after all. Maybe a couple of slights but it wasn't you predominantly, although the way your recent comms read gave me reason to believe otherwise. I will give your wife's panties back now, un-bunched.

                                good, i like those ones

i still take pot shots at Richmond despite them being the best team of the last 5 years.

Doing a pre-season ladder this year should be fun.

The Dees kicked off their pre season with an almost 100 point margin win over North. Yikes.

Looking at the opening round draw (and comparing it to the Sky schedule), afl.com.au has the Dees and Dogs opening the season, on Wednesday 16/03. But looking for this on the Sky app, they seem to think this is Live on Thursday 17/03. Tend to think Sky has this wrong? But then again a Wednesday night??

wait, what? Tradition says Carlton open the season full of optimism that it's finally their year, only to be out of the game against Richmond by 3/4 time. I am not sure i can deal with anything different.

but yes, my AFL app says you are right. GF rematch on a Wednesday.

                                              That's a bit weird.

opening weekend is Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 3 on Saturday, 3 on Sunday

and lol they have West Coast playing at home...

Actually the Saturday could be absolute quality. Cats v Bombers, Sydney derby, Lions v Port.

two weeks out, must be time for Mariner's never even close ladder prediction

Melbourne are clearly the best team. Just won the flag by about a million points, didn't lose anyone. Flag hangover or new Richmond?
The Bulldogs will be close again as well. Return of a couple of forwards will help the goal kicking, their buzzy midfield will swarm teams again as well. Are they still all good mentally after that 4th quarter? Preseason seems to say yes.

After those two it gets a bit muddled. Port are good but getting old and there is still the question mark over Hinkley. Geelong are even older, but always win enough games every year to be there or thereabouts. The Lions get a couple back from injury which should help, but i still feel like we give up to many, and don't kick enough.

Then the next group. Sydney seem to be on the rise, and no longer need Buddy to kick a lot to win games. GWS are still good enough to play finals. Richmond might feel they have one last crack at it before the top end of their list falls over.

Then the unknowns. Are Essendon really good enough? Is this the year Carlton finally play in September? Who or what are St Kilda? Have Freo really improved? And what part does the WA border play on their season?

Collingwood are shit and will be down the bottom. North have good youth but nothing more. The Suns just lost King, and Dew is a shit coach. West Coast are in freefall, smashed by injures and Covid and an old list. Hawthorne nowhere. Crows Nowhere. So what do we get?

                                                Melbourne
                                                Western Bulldogs
                                                Port
                                                Brisbane
                                                Geelong
                                                Sydney
                                                Richmond
                                                GWS

                                                Essendon

It’s approaching crunch time in Tasmania’s bid for the AFL’s 19th club licence, and a new state-of-the-art stadium in Hobart may be enough to win the vote.

That's a pretty impressive stadium concept for a city with a population half that of Christchurch, and a state with a very well spread population of a little over half a million.

We probably could have had them at quarter time but were 3.4 to 0.1 to start. I was excited and nervous. Truth be told, the topsy turvy nature of the Dees' last few seasons did force one to wonder if 2022 would be a disappointment after winning a flag, but last night settled my nerves. The game, some of the pre - game rhetoric and a short 360 segment I watched all gives me a strong belief that we can go back to back. In fact, this could even be the pointy end of an AFL dynasty.

While you'd be tempted to throw Sydney in with Buddy closing in on 1000, you probably want it to be an all-Melbourne thing. So I'd have Melbourne vs Essendon.

It's just a more fun narrative than two good teams where the result doesn't really tell you that much.

Luke Beveridge left his post-match media conference early after a crazy outburst

When a guy goes off like this I think someone needs to sit him down and remind him it's just a game. Just a fucking game. He makes out like the journo is seling state secrets. And although that wasn't the forum in which to have a constructive debate, the journo at least deserved a brief right of reply. So if anyone finds that the journo has published somethine, please post it.
