2023 Hawke's Bay Representative Rugby
-
Information about signings for other teams than the Magpies is hardly published by the HBRU, so it's awesome if we find the odd mention here, or footnote there, saying that a player has signed with the Hawke's Bay Academy or one of our rep teams.
I assume several of the 2022 Academy players will still be in our Academy in 2023, but these are the first new names:
- Kade Manuel (Feilding HS) - halfback
- Hunter Morrison (Feilding HS) - lock
- Hame (Abraham) Luaki (Tangaroa College) - prop
The first two names come from this article:
https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/opinion/300700644/retaining-homegrown-players-seen-as-key-to-lifting-turbos-stocks#comments@Higgins found Luaki in the 'The Blue Wall Series' published by the Herald.
As mentioned in the Hurricanes 2023 thread, Hunter Morrison is also a recipient of a National Development Contract and training with the Canes, just like Cooper Flanders and Harry Godfrey.

Not sure this belongs here but something for @stargazer to follow up on
and about two minutes from the end of this one below there is a footnote that the kid featured in the one above and scorer of the final try below (Hame Luaki) has been signed up for the HB Academy. -
hbmagpies 1RM day for our academy boys - more to come

@Stargazer said in 2023 Hawke's Bay Representative Rugby:
I think Aaron Smith is working with one of our new Academy players (Kade Manuel) here.
Is it just the way it appears or have we gone less local than usual for our academy this year?
-
@Nepia I'm not so sure about that. The HBRU never publishes the list of academy players, so basically we only pick up names from what's published in the media and posted by players themselves on social media.
Manawatū rugby has better media coverage than we have, so that's how the names of two of our new academy players are known (the two from Feilding HS), but that doesn't say anything about the number of Hawke's Bay players v number of players from elsewhere. We've always had a few non-locals.
It will be interesting to spot more names over the next few months, as both Napier and Hastings Boys' had some very good players in their squad and some of those have now left school.

@Stargazer The pertinent bit is right at the end.
"At provincial level, where the opportunities at flyhalf are likely to first arise, Sullivan expects to spend the next two seasons in New Zealand’s largest city but notes that home is always calling: “I’ve always said that once my brother goes back home, I’m going back home.”
Undoubtedly, Magpies fans would rejoice to see Zarn and Bailyn back in the black and white hoops but first thing’s first for the younger brother: the current target is simply getting back to full health and making it through the Super Rugby Pacific pre-season."

Just what I feared after Amelia Pasikala didn't get a spot in a Super Rugby Aupiki squad!
She has signed with the Canterbury Bulldogs women's team and is on her way to Oz. That's the same team that former Tui Cortez Te Pou and former Black Ferns 7s star Gayle Broughton play for.
It's going to be hard enough for the Tui in the FPC Premiership, this year. Losing one of their best players to a pro-league team makes it even harder. This might have been prevented if, particularly, the Hurricanes Poua selectors hadn't ignored our players.
Edit: She'll not play for the senior team (with Broughton and Te Pou) that plays in the NSWRL Women's Premiership. She'll play for the Tarsha Gale Cup team of the Bulldogs. The Tarsha Gale Cup is the age grade and feeder competition for the NSWRL Women's Premiership.
