I know! That's why I love it so much. It tells so many stories.
What's up with France and banning movies? Does the government ban them or do they just get blacklisted by the industry? Is Paths to Glory still banned in France?
You know, political crap.

De Gaulle was a great president but he tended to run France like a Battalion and he had no sense of humour when it came to people gas lighting the French military. Pompidou was more relaxed but he died halfway through his term. Giscard was (still is) a major league asshole who perpetuated the whole "rule France like it's the Catholic church" crap.

Then Mitterand came to power and everything changed. Pirate radios were legalised, movies unbanned, political comedy shows appearing on TV etc...

Chirac followed in Mitterand's footsteps and let eveybody do what they wanted.

Then there's Sarkozy. A guy who has the sense of humour of a North Korean border official and a fuse the size of a gnat. I'm sure he'd like France to go back to the good old "shut the fuck up" days but there's sod all he can do about it. Although, he sure tries.

Was Lost Command a French film or was it just about the French in Indochina?

As a Frenchman how do you find Battle of Algiers as a movie PDP?
Lost Command was a Spanish movie. Well, like BoA it was done with French money but for political reasons it wasn't made in France. And like BoA it was banned in France for several years.

I'm not joking when I say we don't do movies about our wars. Anybody who tried in the 60s and 70s have seen their career shitcanned faster than you can say "black list".

It's getting better now but for a period of 20 years, making a movie about Algeria or Indochina was a big no-no.

As for the movie itself, it's ok. A bit too mild compared to what really happened.

Battle of Algiers: definitely lives up to the hype. 8.5/10 (losses half a mark for being French.)
You can put the half mark back on Neps, the movie is Italian, not French.

As far as French cinema is concerned the war in Algeria never happened. There has hardly been any movie ever made about it, maybe 3 or 4 in 50 years. About as many made about the war in Indochina.

You see, when we commit torture and genocide we like not to publicise it or make movies about it. We're funny that way.

Bloody hell, sitting through a movie for 24h, that's mad.

Unless they make it shorter, in which case they'll have to call it "2.5", "1 and a bit" or something like that.

Apparently Syfy are in talks with Ron D Moore for a second spinoff series set in the Galactica universe. Good times.
Caprica is slowly growing on me. It was a slow start but now, that virtual universe of theirs (and the people stuck in it) is getting very interesting.

Watched the 3rd episode of Caprica last night. Caprica is a planet thousands of years away from earth and in the past.
Watched the first 2 episodes of Caprica yesterday. So far so good, I liked it.

Also love House.

Lost interest in, er.. Lost after season 1 and a bit, when it became clear they were making it up as they went along and had no fucking clue where their show was going.

Finally got to see Avatar. It's goood. I was a bit lukewarm at first, not sure I'd buy into the blue cat people thing but buy into it I did. Really enjoyed it. Can't wait for the sequel.
That's a tragedy if it's that bad, it's an idea that you would think is impossible to fuck up. The ideas behind that movie are even more relevant today than in the 50s.
Couldn't agree more. Heard it was pretty bad before I got around to watch it but it turned out even worse than I thought. They managed to set aside everything that is great about 50s sci-fi and today's blockbusters, kept what was left and made a movie with it. Quite an achievement when you think about it. Just the fact the famous Klatuu line wasn't originally supposed to be in the movie and that Keanu Reeves had to convince the director to include in the script says it all.

I thought War of the Worlds was a bit disappointing as well but it wasn't nearly as terrible as TDTESS.

The problem with Autralia is that even though the acting is good and the photography pretty amazing the way the story was put together is all over the place. Had the two main story arcs ran concurently instead of one after the other it would have made for a better movie I think.

At one point you think the movie is over, all ends well... but no.

What do you mean there's 90 minutes of movie left?!? How's that possible?! They've made it to Darwin. The cattle is on the boat. THE CATTLE IS ON THE BOAT!
I've been reading a lot of Roman history during the holiday break. So I just had to re-watch Gladiator and marvel at the awesomeness that was the opening battle scene. Reading about the Roman army, how it was organized, the different weapons, how it fought, the movie seemed a good representation of what it must have been like to see a Roman force in battle.

On my signal, unleash hell.
Ihr seid verfluchte hunde!!!

Great movie alright. One of the best of the noughties, which let's face it haven't been that great movie wise. More 90s movies will survive the test of time than 00s movies IMO.

Another Ridley Scott fav of mine is Kingdom of Heaven - director's cut, much better than the theatrical version. If only he'd casted a decent lead in it, like Eric Bana for example, it would have been a great great movie. With Orlando Bloom it's just a good movie.

If anything Rambo 4 was too short. Could have used another 20 odd minutes to build up the supporting characters.

You call yourself a film student?

We had everything here:

• the loveable central character, nice but dim.
• the love interest, mysterious and distant.
• the quest!
• the twist in the middle, central character is about to give up but then his loyal sidekicks turn things around and put him back in the saddle, sort of speak.
• the showdown

...all we needed at this point, to make this the perfect Hollywood rom-com, was the happy ending and you fucked it up! How can you fuck up a happy ending?! You can't fuck up a happy ending!

I would like to give big ups to FB's but the "credit" lies with a health scare I got about 6 weeks ago (to the day). Weight loss not necessarily a good thing but all the latest signs are that I'm going to be around to pontificate and bore you all a while longer after all.
