Chocks away - 2011 training - your time starts... now...
-
the physique monsters are always softer than the athletic competitors, buggered if I know why - with that amount of muscle, if you got your body fats WAAAAY down, you'd look even better.

yes, defend the title - or win it again. I think I was driven this year by the fact that I lost to my mate Rick last year for the overall. So all trainings have been focused. So the new mantra is, "train like you're in second place". oe some such, I am sure I have seen that somewhere in the past! -
stood on the scales today for the first time since the weigh in on Friday where I was 77 point something. 85 kg. now hopefully the water will start coming out - certainly heading to the toilet more often now which is always a good thing! Ness's water coming off now - she's down 2 kilos from yesterday to today. I was too scared to weight myself yesterday!! NOt really, but it does play with your head the weight gain, even though you do KNOW that it is fluid retention after the dehydration for the comp.

Ceratinly the dryest I've been for a comp ever. AFter the show I almost could not stop drinking. Had a 6 pack of Pepsi Max in the fridge at the unit where we were staying (you skull back a can at halftime between shows), and when we got back at midnight-ish, I had downed the remaining 4 cans within half an hour - along with the two cokes we got with our Maccas on the way home. And a bottle of mizone and some horrible Musashi sports drink that we won on stage. And was still looking for more!! No wonder there was not much room for food!! -
83.3 this morning - 1.7kg of fluid flushed in 24 hours. Slower to come off after each competition - I call it the speed wobbles. They get more and more with each competition as you go along. So I think we've got it pretty right with doing 3 in a season - this 4th is do-able, but any more and I think the body would really rebel against itself. The post Philippines wobble is going to be fun - adding in a flight too, water retention going to be just fab. Although as we are going to be offshore the goody box we take won't be half as big, and less sugars, more savoury on the post comp binge certainly helps!

todays workout second chest . back / biceps of the week. Heaps stronger on the incline press. And is funny, with the extra fluid in the muscles there's this really big looking bloke looking back at me from the mirrors - more like a physique competitor than an athletic, is cool!! -

A photo from Nationals - pairs, serious business this!!
Man, you look awesome. Following along this ride has been inspirational (makes me push a bit harder on my workouts, and probably many others seek to do likewise), I hope you keep your motivation, interest and success up. Good luck for the next 2 weeks. Heck, it must be doubly hard given your flagging energy, and the RWC in the final stages, especially with losing Carter, Mils, McCaw Gooone for the rest of the cup, Kaino out of the semi-final with rib bruising, half the backs injured.<img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />

Maybe stay a week longer....
yeah cheers Kea, she's a struggle at the moment - mornings not too bad, afternoons terrible, evening after dinner not so bad. Moods up and down as the food goes up and down. Cardio at the gym, treadmill almost not moving - then cycle, again it keeps saying hurry up you're coasting!

But getting there.

Weight down to 80.9 this morning after 1 day of no carbs - down 1.1. Drinking yesterday about 8 litres of water, and same today and tomorrow before cutting down quick for the harbour comp this weekend.

Ness this morning is shattered, tired tired tired. I think sometimes that helps, as it means you have to stop bitching and worrying about yourself and be strong for the two of you, pick up the slace etc. Last two days Ness has done the dinner cooking and the lunch prep for net day, it's been good, as I usully do all the cooking and next day prep. but tonight it'll be me, sit the lass down and let her veg out. That is, IF she wants too - sometimes that prep is theraputic. But you've got to read the signs, and sometimes you get them wrong - then you're damned if you do and damned if you don't...!

and the support here from you blokes too is good when you're up and when you're down. What a bunch of nerds we are! -
The mind games, especially near competitions, seem crazy! some many contradictions with BB - you look mean and super strong yet you are on that edge of just having enough kai/energy to workout and then flex and pose at comps!! add in the tricky business of hydration and no wonder you don't know if you are coming or going some days.

Keep it up guys!! -
Once your comp is done I have some questions for you!! not personal or overly deep and meaningful but I'm interested in what the exit strategy from BB is like for people.
-
exit strategy. Get fat?

This has the startings of an article, as it is a major eating malady you get yourself into - don't want to use the word disorder!

As I say to people, I am the one who eats normal, 'normal' people fill themselves full of crap - how we eat now is lifestyle - fresh veg, fresh meat, there is nothing bad that goes into our bodies. Quantities may vary though!!

But as to an exit strategy, I think we'll always eat like this now, BB or not. LOVE my whole grain rolled oats, 3 egg whites and protein powder for breakfast (and miss it at the moment - 10 egg whites just not the same). You loosen up in the non competition season, but it'll still be eating pretty clean and lean for 6 days, and on the 7th God said BBQ and an icecream please!

There are SO many healthy alternatives out there to convetional treat foods, you just have to get off our collective lazy arses and fins them, and perhaps nmake them, as opposed to heading to countdown and getting 3 Moros for $3. -
True, true. I guess I was thinking about it from a body image angle. We hear about BB not being big enough or people feeling fat when they are bloody skinny etc. Then again you guys have the support and advice from the pro trainers and dieticians - keeping it all in perspective is very important I'd image

From the excitement and enjoyment you've both taken from the 'journey' so far I'd expect you'll continue for a while yet! Not intended as any sort of killjoy question, I just find the mental aspect of it really interesting. If you've been in that kind of shape what 'everyday' shape would you be happy with once you aren't competing anymore? -
yes, it is very weird to feel 'fat' at 85 kilos and maybe 3% BF - which you do after a comp when you weight in at 77 kilos, water depleted etc. But it's part of the package. Like when you play rugby, you know you're going to wake up Sunday morning feeling like you've been run over by a truck.

But is certainly MUCH more in the mind. Harder for women to get their minds around I think, hard enough for me. But think it helps with both Ness and I doing it, experiencing the same thing! -
good results from Harbour - me overall and open athletic, ness won 35+ and dipped out in the overall - but it must be getting closer, one of the judges came up and said to her that she had called Ness first in a tight tussle, so it gets better and better.

So two more sleeps before we fly to the Philippines and hit the boards in Cebu representing NZ.

Both primed and ready to go. Feeling good for the small amount of carbs we were allowed yesterday pre and during contest, was not the usual big carb up and post match feast.

Even though, post match some Burger Fuel Kumara chips, half a chicken from Nandos, diet coke from burger king, an Oh Yeah protein bar and on the way home from BP the only 'naughty', a caramel slice with our coffees (Ness a muffin, which I helped her eat)!!! -
check the nabba.co.nz for results etc! ON match day everyone looks the same to me, but that's classic. You'll also find pics of him if once you go to the NABBA site then look on the right hand column for muscle imaging, and even better - www.gofigure.co.nz for lots of photos of backstage too!
we're back, and not a great week!!

Both placed 5th, me lucky to get there, Ness unlucky and should have placed at least in the top three.

I was flat, body did not respond to the normal carb up - too many competitions, flight, too dehydrated, fuck knows really, but was not sharp at all and lucky to be even a little bit competitive! Gutting, as a bloke from NZ that I have never lost too came in second - bugger.

Ness looked wicked, but fuck knows what the judging criteria was. Chick that came first was BIG (steroid big), but soft, second place was a Kiwi chick that was tall and lean but not ripped. 3rd place was ripped Kiwi, same physique pretty much as Ness, 4th place was another Sterioid freak, sharp looking upper body, fat legs. 5th Ness (who looked the same as 3rd place). So there was no rhyme or reason to the judging for her.

going to write up a bit of an article for this so stay tuned to the Adventures in Cebu!!
