SimonAdd's Jiu Jitsu and Lifting Log

Tuesday 18/09/12<br />
<br />
Bench<br />
1x 90, 95, 100, 105kg (new 1 rep max. Very happy with this, as I was aiming for 100kg. But that flew up, so I thought I'd go for 105.)<br />
<br />
Squat<br />
3x3 107.5kg<br />
1x 115kg (this isn't a true max as I definitely have more in me. I didn't want to push the squats too much today though, as I had already set one PR, haven't squatted in a couple of weeks and still had BJJ to come).<br />
<br />
Chins<br />
4x5 bodyweight<br />
<br />
1.5hours BJJ<br />
<br />
Got all my goals and did pretty well rolling with some guys who usually smash me.<br />
<br />
All in all, a great day! -
Weight this morning: 86.8kg without a gi, 88.7kg with gi.<br />
<br />
Only 0.4kg to go! <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/rugby/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/good.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':good1:' /> In truth, I want to undershoot it by about a kilogram or so, to make sure I can have a nice breakfast etc on the day and not worry about being over by 0.1kg or something stupid. Plenty of time to lose ~1.5kg though.<br />
<br />
Deadlifts, Overhead Press and BJJ tonight. Goals for BJJ are triangles from guard (I suck at these), flower sweeps, standing guard passes and arm-triangles from the top. -
Thursday 20/09/12<br />
<br />
Press<br />
1x60, 65kg<br />
0x70kg<br />
3x3 60kg<br />
<br />
This brought me back down to earth. I had estimated I was capable of putting 75kg overhead but I couldn't even get 70. Seems that I'm weak at the bottom of the movement.<br />
<br />
Deadlifts<br />
3x3 150kg<br />
<br />
1.5hours BJJ<br />
<br />
Rolled with some higher belts, good learning experience though it does nothing for my ego. -
I'm back from a holiday in Turkey. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I kept up neither my diet nor exercise while there. Instead, I drank beer, snacked on ice creams and lazed by the pool.<br />
<br />
Bodyweight this morning was 87.6kg, so I've put on 2kg. A bit shameful, but hopefully nothing I can't lose again before the 20th.<br />
<br />
Today is squats, bench press and BJJ. Goals for BJJ are guillotine and triangle chokes, from any position I can hit 'em! -

Squat<br />
3x3 107.5kg<br />
<br />
Bench<br />
3 x 92.5kg<br />
3, 3 x 90kg (all done with a pause at the bottom, powerlifting style. Much harder like this!)<br />
<br />
Chins<br />
3x5<br />
<br />
1.5h BJJ<br />
<br />
Worked on a side control escape and a back take/sweep from half guard. Felt a bit rusty rolling, it's amazing how even a small time off dulls your technique. -

1.5h BJJ -
Less than a week to go before the tournament and I'm nervous and excited in turns. We have 3 blackbelts visiting from Brazil all this week, so I'll be training as much as physically possible. We had an excellent session yesterday, I rolled with a female blackbelt who can't have been more than 50kg but she was absolutely toying with me. It really drives home how effective this martial art is.
-
On my way to the tournament now. I've had a great week of training and my weight this morning with a gi is 86.4kg so I have a couple of kilos to play with.<br />
<br />
My first match is at 5pm, I'll let you guys know how it goes (hopefully with videos). -
Right, I've been pretty poor at letting you all know what happened, so I'm sorry about that. I was waiting until I had videos of my matches, but it doesn't look like they'll be up for a while so I'll give a brief description.<br />
<br />
I made it into the second round of the tournament, winning my first match by arm-triangle. It went pretty much to plan; I wanted to be in top position, looking to pass rather than playing guard. I was most worried about getting there, though, as takedowns aren't my strongest area. Luckily though, my opponent pulled guard. He threw up a rather sloppy armbar attempt, which allowed me to pass into side control, then get mount, then get the choke.<br />
<br />
In my second match, I was doing pretty well for the first half of the match but about halfway through we went out of bounds and re-started on our feet in the middle. From there, I got taken down and spent a long time in quarter-guard, trying not to get mounted. Right at the end of the match, he managed to take my back for 4 points and the win. I was pretty disappointed with my performance in this match, but it's good experience and all in all I had a great time. -

Ha, yeah it makes a change from discussing England's problems finding a hooker and who's going to start inside Tuilagi. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/rugby/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/mocking.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':mocking:' /><br />

For those that don't know, 'guard' refers to when the person on the bottom has their legs wrapped around the torso of the person on top. It's considered a neutral position in pure grappling as the man on top has the advantage of gravity, but the man on the bottom can use his legs to attempt submission holds and sweeps (where you reverse the top and bottom position):<br />

<br />
By contrast, 'mount' refers to when the man on top has bypassed his opponent's legs ('passing the guard') and is sitting on his upper body. It's considered one of the most dominant positions, as the man on the bottom can no longer use his legs to defend himself and the man on the top can attack with submission holds:<br />

Just seen the videos from the tournament. My instructor's wife was videoing everyone in my team, but my first match clashed with someone else's. So there's a video of my loss, but not of my win. Typical.<br />

<br />
But if anyone wants to see me getting my arse kicked, here's your chance. My second match, I'm wearing the white:<br />

Went to a takedown and guard passing seminar on Sunday, learnt a lot of good stuff but injured my left knee right at the end. I was sparring, twisted on it and felt it pop out and back in, with associated pain.<br />
<br />
Just got back from the doctor and it's apparently a grade 1 MCL tear, so not too bad but I can't do anything too intense for a week or so. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/rugby/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> -

1.5hrs BJJ - only sparred a couple of times, took it easy but felt rusty even so. Amazing how quick you lose it! -
Weighed myself this morning and was happily surprised that, despite letting my diet go a bit, I'm still hovering around the 85kg mark.<br />
<br />
I'm eyeing up another BJJ tournament in March, and so long as I'm still below 90kg after Xmas, I'm thinking of dropping down to 80kg to make the weight class below. If it make it, it'll be the lightest I've been since before University.
