Good wee hit out last night. Training arms with my bro tonight and I wasn't sure what else he'd be able to do with his niggly hip injury. Poor sucker had a tooth pulled yesterday too! never rains it pours aye!
Did some shoulder and lat mobility work to warm up. Y and T rows. Then set shoulders for some bench work.
Have been trying a new set up on bench and it's taking a while to bed in. Haven't quite found my strongest position and it's tricky as I'm working on bar path. That's hard to monitor during your lift. May have to record it to really see what's going on.
Warmed up with sets of 10 at 60, 60, 80. Then did 4 sets of 7 at 100kg. Def felt fatigued from the overhead work on Monday. But it's runs on the board!
Military press next - kept this light, worked up to 50kg for sets of 6.
Standing KB press - two sets of 8 each arm
Finished with a single set of KB goblet squats. 30 reps with a 32kg KB - the last 5 reps were spicy!!Sitting around 107kg at the moment. Have kept sober Oct going, and have made some other pretty significant lifestyle changes since late Oct that have been paying off big time. Just starting to see that pay off now which is really cool. Clothes starting to get a wee bit looser around the hips etc. Aiming to hit 104-105 by end of Nov, keeping it very much realistic. Want to get as close to 100kg as I can by Xmas - but very happy with how things are progressing.

You don't need teeth to work out

@mn5 that was the icing, it's his busted hip slowing things down
He's still got an upper body hasn't he ?
-
@mn5 jaysus, you just don't let up. ha ha now I know why you get laid so often lol.
The hip injury is core related so isolated stuff should be fine. But anything too heavy could cause issues with his core. He's still waiting on an official diagnosis and really doesn't want to do further mischief to himself. He's well over being injured!

We've only got one body and being blokes the temptation to train through the pain is huge haha

Mate of mine who's a skinny fuck had to give away the running cos of too much of it. He had the expensive shoes, recovery gels etc and weighs about 70kg at my height but despite all that he still fucked both knees. He is now a road cyclist and an even bigger piston wristed gibbon than ever.
M4L, don't end up like that. See someone now.

mine's old footy injuries flaring up. i know that, it's why i've stayed away from road running all these years. I just really want to do that half iron man and two other half marathons next year.

I've stayed away from road running cos I'm too heavy...…tough on the joints.
This is my reason and I'm sticking to it despite any number of All Blacks and boxing champs being heavier than me.

@mn5 like you i usually don't enjoy running all that much. At the moment my only run each week is with my boys, and that i love. Watching Mariner Jr the First get better each week is great, last night was his best one yet, 7.5km in 44 minutes. I reckon that's pretty decent for a kid who just turned 10

My boys have a stepdad who is a runner/cyclist. I'm definitely more the power athlete for want of a better term. Between us we're slowly creating a pair of units. They're also brilliant swimmers, my folks invested in lessons several years ago and we haven't looked back, I laugh with my youngest, I literally threw him into the pool years ago, he hated it but seeing how good he is now is awesome.

yea that's great balance alright! Between the endless sports they play, the running with me, and the boxing, mine are getting a pretty rounded base
Teaching your kids to swim is easily the best thing you can do. Living where we do, it's essential, and i love now that i have the confidence in their ability to just let them go for it.

The only organised stuff they do is swimming but they play touch, soccer and whatever at lunch.
You're right, swimming is an awesome skill even in freezing welly.

ugh, running is the only cardio I want to do, as once you get semi-fit it's awesome. But I was NOT designed to pound the pavement!! I'm with @MN5 bro, go and get it checked out asap. Would also strongly suggest you check if you've got any IT band tightness or imbalances in your quads/glutes/hips that might be playing havoc with your knee alignment etc.
@Magpie_in_aus may have some further words of wisdom... as in actually knowing wtf he's talking about ha ha
But in the meantime sit back and let Dr's MN5 and Paekakboyz hassle you into medical treatment. In a loving TSF way of course.

I still enjoy busting into a sprint with the boys every now and again at the park. Anything more than that terrifies me.

@mn5 ha ha I'd be the opposite - I can just feel my hammies ready to ping if I put the hammer down. I just close my eyes and remember my days in the outside backs - then feel puffed and have a lay down!
Do you boys remember when everyone's favourite halfback turned commentator did his achilles whilst scoring a try ? ouch.

Most runners tend to stride out too far due to a low steps per minute (cadence).
The majority of social runners have a step count of 150-155 steps per minute. This results in a lot of heel striking. Aim for 175-180 steps per minute. The aim here is to transition from a predominate heel striker to a mid foot lander.
You can work on this by downloading a metronome on your phone a free one and set the beat to 175-180 and put some headphones in. Run at your normal pace but keep up with the step count.
This is a good start to changing the running technique. In regards to shoes, I would look at this site find your current shoes (the old ones) and see what % they are and try and get a slightly less % shoe (more minimalist). I am a fan of less support and cushioning (and it matters for fuck all if you mid foot strike).
Load management is important as well. Don't increase more than 10% at a time. 5% is slow and steady. That 5% can be increasing either time/distance/pace but only do one of them at any time.
Start a 3 week program of foam rolling your ITB.
To make it managable start off with this and add one roll each day.Day 1: 3 sets of 3 rolls each leg.
Day 2: 2 sets of 3 rolls and one set of 4
Day 3: 1 set of 3 2 sets of 4
Day 4: 3 sets of 4
and so on until you get to 3x10. After that point just do 1x10 after or before a run for management.
The sets of 3/4/5 will hurt lots 8/9/10 should be all good. Don't skip a day. Do it for 2.5-3 weeks should be feeling good.Work on this for glute stability, make sure your foot is dead straight. Knee over middle toes. Don't go for depth go for control. This video gives an average example.
Also work on some supine bridges. Can start with two legs on the ground with both arms down. Then go to no arms supporting.
Then single leg (control pelvis don't let it rotate) with both hands down. Progress to one hand down then no hands down. Further progression put your heel on a foam roller (really works hammys) then further is put leg on swiss ball hold position and roll the ball in and out. -
so you're saying i should put thought and structure in to my training? It's a crazy idea, but it just might work...
Rolling my ITB fucking sucks all of the cock. All. Of. It.
