I mentioned Viands in the pie thread.
Maungatautari is one of the best of its kind in the world, and it is much improved since I was last there over 10 years ago. That link will show you what is on offer.
If the kids haven't seen kiwi, tuatara, kea, etc then Otorohanga is a good option. You could also do the rugby pilgrimage and stop in Te Kuiti to see the Colin Meads statue.
Wait, what? There is a pie thread??!!!

nor day 11....
This however looks to be an error!!!
Where to stay in between?
Isn't @Snowy somewhere north of Auckland?
Yes, and I have an empty 4 bedroom house. Seriously.
PM if interested.
The consequences are high if you wreck the place.

@voodoo You have to mow the lawns. Jacinda said I wasn't allowed.
I'm good with that. But if you ask me to vacuum the basement, I'm outta there
"Basements" so old hat. I'll let you know the new methods.

Jesus Christ. Have you ever read a post from Snowy? And your accepting an accommodation offer?
If you're going to make it that easy, you may as well pick up some fava beans and chianti on the way, just to save the psycho bastard a bit of time.

@voodoo it's the garden shed I'd be worried about...
The shed is where the mower is so he needs that.

Speaking from experience? I'm not so sure I'm keen on that beer with you anymore!

@MajorRage You survived. Beginning to wonder why though.
Obviously weren't into Wagyu-style meat around then.

It puts the lotion on it's skin ...

I would normally say to stay on the Central Plateau, but with everything closed you will simply be driving past a mountain.
You seem to be missing Mt Maunganui. Still a nice spot, despite development.
Why NP to Tron then back down to Rotoiti? That is a long and shitty drive NP to Tron and if you really must go there the detour coming off the Coromandel isn't much and the roads are better.
Maybe NP to Taupo?Drove NP to Raglan today and it was amazing! Some roadworks made it slow, but the scenery was stunning. Afternoon sun on the hills, great coastline. The first half especially.
The Wife having her bag searched by security as she exited New World Te Kuiti was a bit of a lowlight I guess.
