Movie review thread...
The kids really liked Percy Jackson. I thought it wasn't too bad - as far as those types of movies go.
I'm looking forward to seeing this movie.

Movies like this (Jason, the Argonauts and the Golden Fleece etc) have to be viewed tongue in cheek. Over the top special effects and ham acting. Good fun! -
Good to hear. Definitely will be going - and I'll be having an ice cream and diet coke despite that nutritionist who is doing her bun about people buying ice cream, popcorn and drink when they go to the movies.

They'll be the next things banned. I can see it now; I go to Hoyts and the lolly counter will offer a range of `healthy alternatives'. Salad anyone? -
Got to watch avatar the other day ~ I must be one of the few who thought it wasn’t the best thing since the invention of moving picture. Bloody hell I bet there were more surprises in Titanic. About a ¼ into the movie you knew how the next couple of hours was going to play out there was not one I did'nt see that coming moment. His other efforts T2 and Aliens were way better.
It should get the award for special effects but for originality my 10 year old could come up with a more original and complex plot. Now inglorious basterds that was original especially given how many millions of ww2 movies are out there. -
Righto thanks in part to brief trip to NZ and back I've racked up a few movies
The Reader - Kinda felt it dragged abit, quality acting 7/10
Zombieland - Normally I'm not a fan of comedy zombie movies, but thought this was great 8/10
The Insider- Fine to watch when you're bored on a 24 hour flight..but only just. Way to long and not really that interesting a story 5/10
Wanted - The effects are cool but its just so far-fetched and the plot is full of holes 5/10
Inglorious bastards - Quality!Bonjourno! Hilarious and just plain cool 9/10
Avatar 3D (At the big IMAX in London) - As mentioned by a few the plot was lacking but the effects were sensational, I felt at the end that the most annoying thing was that it wasn't really that far off being a quality movie in its own right except it kinda got turned into a cheesy action fest just to show off the cool effects. Definitely a must see movie but only in 3D.
2 Dimensions 6/10, 3 Dimensions 9/10 -
You and me alike. I thought it was an average and predictable storyline.

The special effects made it special but if movie-makers think that I'm going to go to the cinema and wear goggles every time, they have another think coming.

Our local theatre was only showingAvatar' in 2D so we travelled to a theatre 2 hours away to see it in 3D. We came away a little disappointed.

And although I thought the special effects were good, the special effects at Australia's
Sea World' were amazing compared to `Avatar'. -
The Informant, Matt Damon, 7.5/10

I liked this, based on a true story and a book.

Damon is brilliant as 'the informant' narcing on his huge organisations part in price fixing of lysin (sp??)....but all is not what it seems -
yeap ~ wife thought it was going to be a action/comedy due his presence ~ my comment of a dead wife being a good start didn't go down to well.
Excellent!
Watched the recent HBO biopic on Temple Grandin last night. It was a fairly conventional biopic, and a bit cheesy, but it nicely illustrated her thought processes and methods for coping with human socialising.
Temple Grandin (born August 29, 1947) is a Doctor of Animal Science and professor at Colorado State University, bestselling author, and consultant to the livestock industry in animal behavior. As a person with high-functioning autism, Grandin is also widely noted for her work in autism advocacy and is the inventor of the hug machine designed to calm hypersensitive persons.

She claims she is a primarily visual thinker[7] and has said that language is her second language. Temple attributes her success as a humane livestock facility designer to her ability to recall detail, which is a characteristic of her visual memory. Grandin compares her memory to full-length movies in her head that can be replayed at will, allowing her to notice small details. She is also able to view her memories using slightly different contexts by changing the positions of the lighting and shadows. Her insight into the minds of cattle has taught her to value the changes in details to which animals are particularly sensitive, and to use her visualization skills to design thoughtful and humane animal-handling equipment. She was named a fellow of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers in 2009.[8]
-
Apologies I don't know how to work spoilers.
I saw 'The boy in the stripped pyjamas' last week. I thought that it was told really well. The ending was tragic but I think it fitted the story.
The ending really pissed me off as basically you're manipulated into feeling sad at the death of the little German boy, despite throughout the movie in the camp people are getting killed all the time. -
I came away thinking about the irony in his death. Exactly the point you make about the death all around and then this seemingly minor one. Its supposed to annoy you I think. Also it highlights that one death should be no more important than another and the only way Bruno's(german boy) father would learn this is by basically killing his own son in the manner he disposes of all the jews. Though obviously the movie ends abruptly so I've drawn my own conclusions. Also I haven't read the book. -
Shutter I sland. Thought I'd read reviews here but didn't come up when I searched.

Had read and heard good things about this but frankly I was a little disappointed. Not beccause it was bad because it isn't but it didn't deliver on the hype.

It's a homage to film noir/Hitchcock I guess and works reasonably well as such, but it just seesm like everyone is going through the motions a bit from Scorsese down.

Ben Kingsley in particular hams it up. It's all a bit predictable - the lighting, the music, the plot developments are all telegraphed well in advance.

Also at 2 1/4 hrs started to drag. 6.13 -

Sexy Beast and House of Sand and Fog were his last good turns but not dick all since.

Still Im looking forward to seeing this movie. I haven't really read into it too much so maybe it'll play well for me.
