From HBT article about Geoff Cridge re-signing with the Canes:
The 22-year-old, 2m tall player is expected to turn out for his Hastings Rugby and Sports club for the first time this winter in the next fortnight after recovering from knee surgery.
So if he stays healthy, he should be available for the Shield Snorters right from the start of the Mitre 10 Cup season.

That was a bad mistake by Aotea.
They did not have an international clearance for Tongia and were informed of this by the HBRU on Friday.
Aotea still played Tongia the following day against Otane and won.
Otane, inevitably, protested and their appeal was upheld by the HBRU. The match, and competition points, have been awarded to Otane.
Perhaps the first line should read "That was dumb by Aotea"?

I have checked the NZRFU player registration database and as of now my version is showing Marino Mikaele-Tu'u as registered as a player at the College Old Boys-Victoria University club in Wellington. Perhaps the HBRFU has the necessary paperwork in their office transferring him back to Hastings RSC but not got round to entering it into the online database? If not then it maybe Aotea might not be the only club penalised for playing an ineligible player, always assuming another club lodges a protest.

NZRFU player registration database
Just out of interest (I have no idea how it works), are the rules around registration the same for club rugby players who are signed with a Mitre 10 Cup team, and those players who are not?
Same question, but now for players with a Super Rugby contract (either a full or development contract)? -

Same question, but now for players with a Super Rugby contract (either a full or development contract)?I will have to do a bit of research when it comes to first class fixtures re length of residence in an area before you are allowed to represent that province in both first class and Ranfurly Shield Fixtures (we in HB have long memories about that!)
There used to be some sort of residential requirement for club games but whether that still exists will have to be looked into. Regardless of this a player must still be registered with the club before he can represent them and in NZ you are only able to be registered at one club at a time.
On a slightly different tack I'm not sure how a number of players at secondary school in HB can be permitted to be registered at their school and at a particular club in the same year but there look to be a number of them in that situation.

Current qualification to play club rugby in Shield Snorters in any competition match is: (from 2017 HBRU Handbook)
Rule 5 Player Eligibility
(a) Any player arriving in Shield Snorters must reside in the province for a clear seven (7) days, before being eligible to play in any grade.
Exemptions:
(i) Super Rugby players returning from Super Rugby duties; 7's players returning from New Zealand national duties, and other players returning from involvement in New Zealand national teams
are eligible to play for their Clubs at any time provided that they are contracted to HBRFU and are registered to that club.
...
(iii) Secondary school students playing for a club must be registered to that club and also must have a clearance letter from their school principal. To play provincial rugby for any province in NZ there is no residential qualification any more - i.e. no days or weeks residence required before playing.
You qualify as a local player for any province if you are registered to a club in the province, or sign a provincial contract to a province by the cutoff date - which was six days before the Mitre 10 Cup start date. This year all the squads are to be named on 8 August.
E.g. A player can be registered to a Wellington club, and play for that Wellington club all year, and sign a provincial contract for Shield Snorters before 8 August this year and be a local Shield Snorters registered player for the Mitre 10 Cup.
If that Wellington club player signed for Shield Snorters after 8 August this year he would be a loan player to Shield Snorters for the Mitre 10 Cup.
Interesting with what you write about Mikeale-Tu'u though. I saw him play one game for Hastings RS this year against Havelock North before he went off with the NZ Under 20 team. (see my entry of 2 April above).
