Alphabet Bands/Artists

  • Right so away on a work conference and to pass the time while in seminars getting talked at, we're coming up with an A to Z of bands.

Rules are one per letter, last name is where they are in the alphabet and you can never listen to any other music.

It's proving bloody tough, I'm not even a quarter of the way through.

    Have at it!

sorry i am a bit dumb, can you expend on this line please?

Faith No More would come in at letter M.

    I guess you're restricted to 26 bands?

Sorry, I mean Stevie Wonder would be W. The bands are by their second name, others by their first, so Faith No More would be F, The White Stripes would be W.

Edit, and it's the last bands/artists you ever get to listen to.

  • @MN5 you're as obsessed with time as my missus. It's 10pm in Orlando.

  • @antipodean yep. The toughest is making sure you have a good mix.

Yep. They might not have done anything good in the last 20 years but Mothers Milk, BSSM and One Hot Minute are absolutely brilliant.

I had absolutely no desire to see them when they were here earlier this year either having had a look at the set list but they'll always be sentimental favourites.

I did a change and then change back and then change and change back and I'm still not settled on P

I don't think I could handle not listening to P### for Pyros self titled album ever again but then Prince takes me back to Student days too!

Prince is probably my most favourite artist ever so he's a shoe in for me personally. I love the Police too but they're no chance.

  • Just given myself a massive uppercut.......

Iron Maiden absolutely PISS in ahead of ALL others. How in the actual fuck did I miss them first time round ?

Even Iron Butterfly deserve a mention way above my initial choice who I think got picked cos I found a CD recently while cleaning out the car.

  • Audioslave
    Bowie, David
    Cult, The
    Deftones
    Exponents, The
    Faith No More
    Guns n Roses

    Rage Against the Machine
    Soundgarden
    Tool
    Underworld
    Van halen
    Weezer
    Xzibit
    Young MC
    Zombie, Rob

Sooo many bands in S & M that i was forced to leave out.

  • Funny how U2 doesn't make anyone's "U"

  • @Hooroo cause they're shit

  • @mariner4life said in Alphabet Bands/Artists.:

    Or UB40 🙂

  • every time i click my fingers, somewhere in the world, a shit U2 song is being played

    Or UB40 🙂

UB40 were about ten blokes that somehow combined to sound like one bloke singing over a bad synthesizer.

They then split into two, both claiming to be "official" and hilariously one of the million horn players they had was forced to join a UB40 tribute band.

"Don't break my heart " is an ok song but on the whole by god they're a fucken awful group.

U2 would get in over them in a heartbeat which says it all.

Exponents ? really ? wow......closest kiwi bands for me would be Dragon or Shihad but neither was in with a genuine shout.

Chris Cornell makes your list twice ! well done that man, I couldn't quite justify them being ahead of STP, I guess I prefer one dead grunge singer over another even though Cornell was a better singer than Weiland.

Offspring are a good choice but my young workmates have made me appreciate Mr Ocean so it's a tough one. Audioslave weren't a chance against ACDC.

Xzibit gets in ahead of XTC but he's mainly there as a beneficiary of fuck all options.

Is it too late for me to replace Cypress Hill with Phil Collins ? "In too deep" came on the radio while I was out and reminded me of his undoubted fucken awesomeness.

  • Oooohhhh Head Like A Hole is my H.

Dave Dobbyn my D too. Forgot about NZ bands

  • OMD ? are you my mum?

  • @mariner4life said in Alphabet Bands/Artists.:

Don't get me started on some of these choices M4L........just don't

If we're doing a fern reunion and I need a lift I'll be calling you as opposed to old mate RR.....

I WILL FIGHT EVERY LAST ONE OF YOU OVER THE FIRST FOUR ORCHESTRAL MANOUEVRES IN THE DARK ALBUMS.

It was a knock down brawl between them and the Oblivians for my O spot though.

I wanna know.....I wanna know......I wanna know whyyyyyyyyyy.......anyone would bother trying to justify being a fan of this tepid and utterly shit group.

I really expect so much more of you @Rocky-Rockbottom

  • Some good efforts eh! I'm not even close to completing. Oh and yeah once you have it down there's no changes, you're locked in.

    Commitment is scary.

  • This is a really dumb game. I struggled to G and ,when faced with a decision of not being able to listen to either Marvin Gaye or Al Green for the rest of my life, gave up.

  • @MN5 said in Alphabet Bands/Artists.:

XTC ( no other options )

There are other options - The xx, X-Ray Specs but in order to have a decent, sizable and varied collection after this dumb exercise I too would go for XTC

  • @Crucial said in Alphabet Bands/Artists.:

Yeah great point. Doors, Soundgarden, Snoop Dogg, Rick James, James Brown and many others miss out.

    Xzibit gets in.

    Shit game

haha, says the guy whose list is any 2 hours of Radio Hauraki from 1997...

I resent that remark. Some of my groups best work is from the late 60s. I even go so far as the mid 2010s

  • OK, so I was in a boring meeting and had a go. I took it from the point that, according to the rules this would form a collection that had to sustain me forever so some artists have been chosen on the basis of the size and scope of their work, others as 'go to' enjoyment and some as previously unexplored

    Average White Band
    The Beatles
    Sam Cooke
    Dexys Midnight Runners
    Echo and the Bunnymen
    Aretha Franklin
    Marvin Gaye
    Donny Hathaway
    Isley Brothers
    The Jam
    Kool and the Gang
    Bettye Lavette
The Muscle Shoals Swampers (cheating a little here)
    New Order
    Shuggie Otis
    Prince
Quincy Jones (yes it breaks the rules, but I can't come up with anything else)
    Otis Redding
    The Sound
    The The
    The Undertones
    Luther Vandross (struggled here)
    Paul Weller
    XTC
    The Yardbirds
Frank Zappa (just to extend the collection to exploring something new)

  • @Rocky-Rockbottom

    You missed the “M.”

Might I politely suggest the Music Machine?

  • A-Amy Winehouse
    B-Bryan Adams/ Bruce Springsteen
    C- Celine Dion
    D-The Doors
    E- Elvis
    F- Fleetwood Mac
    G- Guns n Roses/ Green Day
    H-Calvin Harris
    I - INXS
    J- Bon Jovi
    K-The Killers
    L- Lady Gaga
    M- Madonna
    N- Nirvana
    O- Oasis
    P- Prince
    Q- Queen
    R- Radiohead
    S-Sarah Mclachlan
    T-The Cure (couldn't lose Celine)
U- U2 (unapologetically, what the hell is wrong with U2!!)
    V-The Verve
    W- The Waterboys
    X-
    Y- Years and Years
    Z- Zero-7
