Ultimate NPC: - Hawkes Bay

  • Don't be all mouth and no trousers. Who's your team?

  • Dagg. BBBR. Would be the two without any debate I'd assume?

Bucky? We might have some midfield competition? Matt Cooper. Murdoch Paewai used to carve up for us too. George Konia. If it is opened up to pre NPC none of them would get a look in with McRae and Davis locking up those spots.

Damn, I wish I'd shipped my almanacks over!

  • @Nepia goes without saying youโ€™ll want Konia in as coach of the Taniwha team?

  • Not sure @Gunner

George Konia played for Manawatu first ....

  • @Number-10 said in Ultimate NPC: - Hawkes Bay:

But played for Hawkes Bay schools before that.

I assume @Gunner is suggesting he's a bad coach and that's why we'd want him coaching the Taniwha?

No no, just that heโ€™s a former Hawkes player but now coaching the Taniwha, so eligible to coach us. Similar logic as your naming of your Otago team...

Ah right, nah, I don't care about coaches. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • Lets get some contenders first. Don't want to miss any.

Props: Sona, Clint, Edmonds, Crawford ......May/Franks
    Hookers: Norm, Hika, Ash

Locks: Dustin Watts (my fav play when I was young), Bryn, Lokotui, BBBR, Allerdice
Loose Forwards: Dallas Seymour, Gareth, Karl Lowe, Michael Johnson, Mutu, george naoupu, Waldron, Tony Lamborn

    Halfbacks: Easy Pick: Chris Eaton
Honarable Mentions: Brad Weber, Kahn, Danny Lee

    First 5: West, Dan W, Matty B
Midfielders: Shoes, Bucky, Fruen, can't think of many others....Nathan Mauger

Outside backs: Bucky again, Izzy, Zac, Cunningham,

Brain has given up. Obviously majority of those are from 2000 onwards.

  • @Hooroo The Barracuda to his friends.

    Halfback ๐Ÿคฎ
Lock: I'd have Abbott ahead of Allardice
Loose Forwards: Michael Johnson must be about the best Magpie player never to make it to higher honours (so long as you don't count been selected in Canes squad and never taking the field)
Outside Backs: No-one better than JC. I'd put Dan Kirby on the bench though to come on and kick those 60 metre penalties

You can't have liked Watts too much, he mostly played 6 for us back in the day.

Also, if we had down votes you'd get two for mention Franks and May in this discussion. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Some of the older players would be: Gordon Falcon, Romana Graham, @Stockcar86 good call on Johnson, Gareth Evans at lock too, Graham Higginson, Horrell of the recent lot, Roger Randle had a few years before being poached by @Hooroo's mob, Ben T if he hasn't already been mentioned, Ken Taylor on the wing, Kaka, Jeff Karika on the flank too - he was an awesome midget, Forster and Pod Turner before they got poached.

  • @Nepia We'll let you have Matthew Cooper. ๐Ÿ˜‰

You don't want a goal kicker?

  • Coops might be Waikato's record points scorer but he wouldn't make the best XV. We can use Beaver.

It's just the kicks out in front I need to worry about!

Who are your 12 or 15s?

  • @Nepia My Waikato team had ALB and DMac in those positions. The caveat is that both were very young when they played for Waikato so they've been picked on SR and AB form.

Andrew Strawbridge went close at fullback in my team. He's 3rd on the points list BTW, with The Boot 2nd.

  • Now that I have thought a bit more, maybe Paul Cooke or Tony Maidens on the wing?

I agree with @Nepia about Falcon at 8, no-one better in his prime. And also Horrell, even if not homegrown. The only other contender that I can remember who was a great regular 12 was Davis Norman, but that is probably showing my age. I do think that Danny Toala can eclipse them all with the right focus and opportunities

  • @Stockcar86 said in Ultimate NPC: - Hawkes Bay:

Maidens wouldn't really be in the conversations to start though would he? Guildford, Cooke, Randle, Taylor etc would all be ahead in the queue.

As were Guildford and Randle, and Trinity Spooner Neera for that matter.

Actually, that reminds me Tafai Ioasa is another nomination for the loosies.

  • @Nepia could run Bert Cooke at 12

Yeah, if it was non NPC era it would be between Cooke and Blake in the 20s and MacRae and Davis from the 60s.

  • @Nepia Get Mike Coman in there, alongside Franks, May, The Mighty Kahn...surely KK as coach... ๐Ÿ™‚

Developed him for you guys. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Yes you're right.

In 1987, his last year at Te Aute College, he made the HB Under 18 team that won the Central Region Under 18 title.

That HB Under 18 team contained Shaun Bell, Aaron Hamilton, George Konia, Nathan Paewai, John Timu, Andre Bell, Jason McDowell, Stu Forster, Greg Halford, George Ormond, Justin Cullen and Gordon Falcon, who all went on to play first-class rugby.

No wonder they beat Wellington 25-7 in the final.

    Damn, that team was stacked!

  • @Nepia looks like it's made up basically of of TKK o Lindisfarne.

Also should we add Marvin Karawana to the midfield options?

  • @Stargazer As you're clearly going to be our team captain, how are we going to select our team?

  • @Nepia Moi??????? I'd maybe create a poll if that was possible in a post (in an existing thread), but I don't think it is.

This is my attempt at naming a team. I'm far from sure though. So many loosies to choose from. Not sure about the halves, especially in the reserves. I want Dagg in the starting XV but no room at fullback, and then there are several wings to pick from. That 23 jersey could go to so many players ... ๐Ÿค”

    1 Sona Taumalolo
    2 Norm Hewitt
    3 Brendon Edmonds
    4 Brodie Retallick
    5 Bryn Evans
    6 Mutu Ngarimu
    7 Karl Lowe
    8 Gordon Falcon
    9 Brad Weber
    10 Ihaia West
    11 Zac Guildford
    12 Andrew Horrell
    13 Richard Buckman
    14 Israel Dagg
    15 Jarrod Cunningham

    16 Ash Dixon
    17 Clint Newland
    18 Ben Tameifuna
    19 Mark Abbott
    20 Gareth Evans
    21 Danny Lee
    22 Dan Waenga
    23 Roger Randle

Good work, now we can fight it out using that as a starting point.

I'd go with Ben T over Edmonds.

    Hika over Hewitt.

Graeme Higginson at lock if Canterbury don't pick him up (which seems unlikely).

Watts over Ngarimu but we should probably select Michael Johnson there.
Maybe Seymour over Lowe at 7 although Falcon was an awesome 7 when he first played too.

Lee over Weber. Although we're forgetting about Stu Forster too who is a chance.

McClutchie and Falcon are already better 10s than Waenga for the bench but Berquist would probably rival Ihaia for a starting spot.

Murdoch Paewai or Matt Cooper in the midfield.

We can chuck Paul Cooke and Paul Turner into the mix due to the selection criteria.

Greg or Matt Cooper or Dagg at fullback. Cunningham was great, and RIP of course, but those three were all better players.

Most definitely not. He rates alongside the likes of J Schoonbee and Luke Rooney on the level of consideration for things like this. Where is the down vote button when we need it?

  • @Nepia I agree with you on the Pod Turner mention. Was good enough to captain the Bay at 19 years of age. Can recall being in attendance in Taumaranui for his debut whilst still at school. Dam well got cheated out of the lucky draw for programme numbers, brought four of them and wouldn't you know it the winning number was right in the middle of the sequence of the numbers I brought, only problem was it was not there! We also famously walked in on the KC team meeting at the Taumaranui Cossy Club when we arrived for a feed and a few warm up beers! Correction it might have been called some other name and might even have been the Mananui Club but whichever it was it certainly was one for the memory banks. Can recall our minibus driver told his missus he was taking the day off work to play in a special winter bowls tournament and might be a bit late getting home that night, believe that or not!!!!!!!
