Car/ute advice please.

Hey people, now I am thinking of getting a ute for a runaround etc. Got a prefctly good car, but just want something I can use to run a bit of rubbish to tip, throw a scooter or likes on for golf etc, so basically just local stuff. I been looking around and seen a few that kind of interest me, but not sure of high KMs on them. They tend to be diesel run utes with 200-300km on, and so I under no illusions I getting a new ute. Just does anyone have experience of them and what Km's you would get out of them. See I after one with just a tray (with sides) and not wanting a canopy etc on it, don't want 4WD either.
I will add I a bit pissed and wished I had actually bought me work ute home form Aus a few years back when I returned, it was highish Ks too but always went well.
Any advice from anyone will be absorbed while looking, and thanks in advance fellas!

I've got a 2004 Hilux 4wd which I fucking love. 3.0d normally aspirated, (the last of the really good indestructible engines according to my mechanic). Removeable sides on flat deck and have put a tipper on it. Also bull bar with winch, so is now my favourite vehicle ever. Goes anywhere, does pretty much everything (except transport anyone in comfort). About 220,000 kms now so just run in.
Have just had to do the clutch in it, but given that I use it to tow a digger around on a trailer, I can forgive it for that. It gets a bloody tough time. Lives up to the Top Gear episode reputation. O for Olsen but not cheap, and I'm told they are actually an appreciating asset (understandable as I will never, ever sell mine).

@Snowy had a 2wd Toyota in Aus and never let me down, was my work vechile and geez I wished I kept it , and brought it back home with me. Even being retired now, I starting to get pissed not having a ute for the few things I want it for, and best of all if Mrs decides a wekkend down the way at daughters etc is on, I still got a vechile for rugby etc!!!

@Dan54 Still have a car as well but the ute is so handy, I drive it just as much. Very rarely have to piss around with a trailer anymore unless moving some serious weight, digger or tractor. Even then I tow it with the ute so can't do without it really.
Only comment I would make is the lack of a few horses in my one. Loads of torque for towing, has low ratio for getting around the place when muddy (doesn't sound like you need that) so all good there, but a touch more power would be nice. The aforementioned car is a V8 so the contrast is marked.
I have new aftermarket, hi flow, large diameter stainless exhaust sitting on the back of the ute as I type, which should give me about an extra 10hp, so there are a few things that I can do to trick it up a bit. Hopefully without affecting the legendary reliability. It's noisy as anyway, so no change there. Comfort is never going to be a positive attribute for it.
@MajorRage and I have had Hilux discussions before and are firmly in agreement on at least this one thing - they are awesome (in the true sense of the word).

....i cant stop myself pointing out that every time i see this thread name i read it as "cute advice please"....
-
@Kiwiwomble I'm turning it into a Hilux thread anyway, so the title can be changed to that.

in all honesty, just buy another one of those. They are basically indestructible.

we always use to have tritons for work utes and i got so annoyed because there was a very good reason they were 10-15k cheaper than a hilux...they were shit in comparison, this is a couple of generations ago so dont know if they have improved....but id still go for a hilux (or a ranger, they get some good press)
-
will go against the grain here a bit.depends on what age ute you are looking at. if late 90s or early 2000s hilux id fine but if 2010 onward it opens up your options. from there onwards hilux really come back into the pack. what you are buying then is a car with a deck.currently driving a ranger doing about 40k in it a year and enjoying driving it and previously drove a bt 50 for 250000k and still own it and it does everything it should.
if buying a later ute i would be going for the best value that i could find ,any brand while ruleing out the triton and the great wall etc. all the good brands with diesel motor should be good for well over 350000k if looked after if not more. -
@ploughboy i have a vague memory that some generations of BT-50 share lots of stuff with rangers, joint development ford and mazda maybe
-
I've got a Ranger, it's fucking rad and i love it. But it does not fit Dan's brief
