Anyone here rowing on a concept 2??

My gym workout now has me finishing up on a concept II for about 15mins. After warming up on the bike and treadmill, the rowing makes the the body ache. Average around the 2-2:15min/500mtrs for the first 10 mins and then for the last 5 things start turning to jelly and average around 2:30mins/500mtrs. Never been into the row machine in the past except the past couple of months. Highly recommend it.

Used rowing for a warm up back when i was weight training. 2:00/500m. Tried the whole how quickly can i do 2000m thing, never managed to crack 7min, but was bloody close, literally a second or so. Literally fall off the rower and crawl to a mat and lie down for a couple of mins. Always on 10, because it was there.<br />

Could never be arsed to sit on it for that long to do the longer distance stuff. Myself and a mate used to do minute intervals, a minute flat out, a minutes rest. Ten times, don't know if it was any good for us but it kind of fits in with the whole rugby specific traning thing, i think.<br />

If i could be arsed i'd train out here, at 2000m so it would be a pretty good workout. Ah well, time to go to the pub.<br />

Oh yeah, if i got the arse pain thing, i'd just get off and stretch before starting again, seemed to work for me. -
those intervals are killler and pretty good - well, I assume they are, as we had some NRL league bloke training at the Whangamata gym a few years back, and that was part of his training, so we jumped right in and hoed into it too - damn near kills ya, but good.<br />

Dunno whether its just me but I couldn't imagine putting it on any other setting? :-k Always seemed to be just right on 10 so whenever I tried a 6 or 7 it was just crappy and didn't give enough resistance. -
you do have to 'learn' to row on lower settings!! But agree, used to feel like you would fall off the back on too easy a setting.<br />

All my PB times have been done on ten, but hvae been training myself to row at 7, so when I put the dame ewffort in, I should go faster, as less resistance etc...<br />

Used a 2minute 'cruise' at 1:53 - 155, followed by a minute at 1:40 or as close to it as I could keep it,last minute went through at 1:37.<br />

Heart rate at the end of that 19 beats per 6 seconds, so around 190 bpm. <br />

Jaysus, yes ACTC. Tried it out 2 times this week after doing treadmill, bike, cross county skier and it is fantastic exercise. Have finished up doing 10mins on the rower both times and while doing a fairly pedestrian pace - 2074m & 2124m for both slots, have staggered off the thing wanting to die. Will keep at it now and look for some improving times. -
doesn't take lone Coastie before you can start cranking it up - 2:00 minute 500m splits was my first goal a couple of years back when I started, and once you get there, you can start flying - sort of. Never really gets easy though, as the fitter you get, the harder you piush yourself, a never ending circle!

The next two kiwis above me in the 30-39 age grade list on the concept2.com website have both cracked 8500. that's like another minute to shave off over those 30 minutes - would have to average 1:47.<br />

if you get into rowing Paj, log into that site, and register all your times - good incentive to keep training as you see your results improve over time. Also brilliant to see people above you on the ratings ladder, and have a target to knock off!! -
the one I use is a PM2, about three years old now. Have some brand new ones at the gym, and they are really quiet. PM3 - white, they look really flash! About 2800 Kiwi for a brand new one these days. Worth every penny I reckon!<br />

what setting do you row on Bart? I always have it on 10 which is the hardest - should i drop it down and then build up the resistance once i manage to average less than the 2.00 mark? or should i just keep at it on this setting?<br />

When you've done millions of metres on the Concept 2 as BartMan has you would probably be able to get some more aggressive times. :nta I have just gone through the 80,000m mark and can only do around 1 min 46 for 500m sprint. Doing it over a 2 to 3 k row I'm only getting through around 2min per 500m split, which is piss poor in comparison but my reasoning is that I will get there with some more mileage under the belt. <img src='http://www.daimenhutchison.com/invision/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':lol:' />Â

I have just discovered the custom 1 min on, 1 off, 2 min on 2 off up to 4min and back again. It's really good for an unfit fella like me.<br />

Going back tonight to try and improve on recent distance. IT's only 4000m which is achieved in 16 mins of rowing with 15 mins of resting in between, but it's a start. -
I tihink it is miles under the belt, knowing how to row properly technique wise too - read all you can - concept2.com has some good shit.<br />
Was at the gym the other inght, and they have 5 machines beside each other. I jumped on and started rowing, about 28 strokes per minute, was clocking 1:50/500s, and cruising - tidy stroke etc. The bloke beside me going hard out, finishing an olypmic sprint by the look and sounds, but was at 2:05 / 500, and stroking well over 30 per minute. A little more technique, and a little less gung ho helps!! There was also some chick doing intervals the other day, getting it down to 1:40/500s, but only forshort bursts - 30 seconds or less. Impressive at any rate!!<br />

I remmeber the first time I saw a rowing machine it was at a rugby fitness test. I rowed 9:15 for 2500 which wasn't too bad I thought!<br />

I always used to row on 10 - all my PBs are at the ten setting until this year- the more powerful the rower the higher the setting I read somewhere. Most former footballers (yankball) row on the heavy settings, and front rowers too I would think!!. less strokes, more power (oh oh oh as Tim Tayloe would say). I now row on about the 8, but up that to the ten for shorter distances.<br />

Did 4,100 metres last night, which I was stoked with. Got a bit excited, didn't warm down properly or stretch and cramped up massively on the strut home. Had to take a sit down on the side of the road on a jam packed Hong Kong footpath.<br />

We used to do alot of work on the concept 2 machines when i was rowing at high school. to be fair, i dont much like them anymore after all the pain they caused me throughout that period. The resistance setting is meant to be around 4-6 to best simulate the drag of rowing on water - you wont see many rowers using a resistance setting above 6 on a concept 2. however, if you know how to set the 'drag factor' on the machine (generally by pressing two of the buttons simultaneously), try and set it around 140; this is the international standard for most indoor rowing competitions.<br />
a higher drag setting will give you a far harder workout, but it also makes it easier to pull the splits down lower because of the speed it causes the fan to spin, so it is a trade-off. in saying that, so long as you keep the resistance consistent, you will still see the gains and p.b's you are making. the times you speak of are very impressive, i had guys in my rowing crew who would struggle to do those sorts of times. try doing a 10km piece on the machine, if you think the 30 minutes killed you, this will feel like a crucifixion of sorts, but it is incredibly satisfying once you have finished it! -

Have been nudging the 10k over the last few weeks, 36:35 my top effort, want to drop that below the 36 mark. Dead right about feeling like you are the rowing dead. Only about an extra 1700 or 1800 metres than when you row hard out for 30 miuntes, but those metres feel like you are rowing up Huka falls!!
