Happy New Year, Ferners.
Well after a month away out there in the world all I can say is thank fark I don't live anywhere else but here. Following exhaustive research I can report:
Germany - everybody seems to be worried about terrorism and they want the government to make strong rules restricting freedoms so they can all be safe. If not this government then they'll get another one that will. Luckily they don't have any history of politicians taking advantage of situations like that. To be completely honest that last sentence isn't my work, I went to a comedy club in Berlin and practically everyone on the bill used it in their act. In a country with a strong tradition of political cabaret and satire it's probably a good indicator of what people are thinking in private.
UK - nobody seems to be worried about terrorism and they want the government to make strong rules restricting freedoms of everybody else except the person you're speaking to. Pretty much everybody thinks at least half the population - the other half - are insane. My nephew and all his mates are livid that the UK is leaving the EU, but none of them actually voted because politics is boring apparently, as opposed to whining after the fact, which they never get sick of.
US - why is everyone so serious over there? It's as if people are worried or something. Of course I never went south, maybe everybody is partying hard down there.
NZ - happily when I got back the things most people were concerned about were overseas. And the wind.
